Sent: Friday, March 06, 1998 5:06 PM Subject: Long Run #16 Reminder This Sunday it is back on the COG loop at 8am. In my hurry to get last weeks reminder out so late, I forgot to change the format to text sorry if it was hard for some of you to read. This Wednesday, March 11, at 3p.m. in the Police Operations Center at 705 S. Nevada Ave. the Pikes Peak Highway Advisory Commission will have a meeting. I am going to try to go because the meeting is about toll road fees and such. I think they should charge by the car, not by the person, and I am going to tell them just that. If you have the time, try to stop by and let your voice be heard! Incline Club members were busy last weekend! The leader board got a new leader when the top 2 runners and the top dog took off for the weekend. Larry Miller is now the man to catch. All this running must be paying off because Larry got 1st overall in the Winter Series 20K run. This also got him 1st overall in the series. Terries 3rd overall in the 20K earned her either 2nd or 3rd in the series. Keith ran a PR of 4:06:46 and took 7th out of 50 or so runners in the Frosty Trail 50K at Chatfield. Dan got second in the Pueblo 10 mile. Paul took top 10 out of 10,000 (not counting the 10 year olds you would have to ask) in the Fort Worth Cowtown 10K. I have not heard from Carol, Larry T, Thom or Kelly but know they raced on the weekend too. Newbie to the e-mail list, Linda McCarthy, wants to know if anyone is going up the Incline at this time of year. Let me know if you do or know of anyone who does and I will pass it on to her. Top 3 reasons not to have a top list 3) Because 2) It is 4:59 and I cant think under pressure 1) I have no more slams against the Winter Olympics Go out hard, when it hurts speed up... Matt http://www.skyrunner.com ************* >From Larry Miller Incline runners, Im not sure how many of you have kids that run the Kids Fall Series (I know Tim has a dozen or so). But I need input as to moving the first kids run to be with the Fall Series Tune-Up on Sept. 27, then the race would be the next week at NMV on Oct. 4, #3 Oct 18 at GofG, and finish up with #4 Nov. 1 at Ute Valley. This is to get away from the colder weather of the last Fall Series run Nov. 15. If this sounds OK e-mail (e-mail address removed for www posting) or call me at 594-4365. ************* >From Douglas Ryden Matt et al., Had the first race of the season this weekend, and found out that even though I only did two Sunday runs with the Incline club, my training has already started to pay me back. I ran a 9:18 steeple, qualifying for NAIA nationals, and winning the meet. I never got tired, but I kept speeding up, your tagline seemed to work anyway. While you folks break trail through snow every Sunday I get to run through the dirtiest mud this side of the everglades, I havent had a shoe pulled off yet, but I do make sure to tie my shoes extra tight. ************* >From Tim Allison A friend of mine sells those Polar Heart Rate Monitors. He also offered to sell me one, more or less at wholesale. Of course, I cant afford the download machine, but it would be nice to be able to analyze a workout. (You know Right here is where I lost sight of Matt. Here is where I lost sight of Dan. etc). Perhaps a subset of the Incline Club would be interested in getting together and buying one as a group. Obviously, there would be difficulties. Who would keep it? Do you sign it out? What about those of us without modern PCs, etc. Of course, everyone who wants one may already have one. Still, I thought maybe it should be a topic of discussion, especially with the HRM rave on your site. On a related note. Im sure he would give discounts, if other Club members are interested in pulse monitors. I borrowed one for one of my long runs in GoG, and it was kind of fun. (Damned if I can get my heart rate up high enough when I run downhill, though. Its easier slowing down going uphill.) While I may never make a long run with the club until summer, I would think almost everyone would benefit from keeping track on an occasional run. Perhaps there are those for whom it would be worthwhile to check one out from the club once a month, etc. Whatever. I am not a salesman and promise to make no money off any decision thats made. Especially, if its get Real!"! (I have the HRM computer interface and it is VERY cool! You can do overlays of different workouts to get exact comparisons etc. If you want to read the story I wrote that Tim was referring to it is here: http://www.skyrunner.com/story/heart.htm Matt) ************* Also from Tim Allison, I forgot to mention. Two of the guys here have been through VO2 measurement programs, including body fat analysis and stuff. They both did it cheaply. One through a Community College class, in CA I think. The other in Md with some guy who only charged $25, because he did large groups. Both are in my price range, but I dont know if there is any place on the Front Range nearly that cheap. It ties in to the pulse monitors, because they use their results to evaluate the settings to use. It seems to me the Incline Club might be able to wrangle a VO2 day out of somebody. Maybe the Olympic Center? I would think a fellow scientist might be interested in monitoring what happens before the start, and after the end, of Incline season, for example. Could you see if other Club members would be interested in this sort of thing? I think it would be fun, but I am a lunatic. Course, so is any other member of the Incline Club. (I think getting tested is one of the best things you can do. Formulas just do not work for a lot of runners and heart rates! Matt) ************* WWW post 3/1/98 With many people off to races, several people recovering from a race yesterday, and a couple of sick people, only 5 people showed for the first run of March. (This section cut results listed above) Even with the small group, Larry M managed to have a good time. He and Glen claimed to have seen some mountain lion tracks. To them it looked like it moved the before mentioned (1/18/98) dead deer a few feet so Larry M grabbed it (the dead deer not the lion) and stood it up in the middle of the trail which managed to give quite the scare to Terrie when she came through! Most of us should be back for a big group next week see you then. *************** Misc. Stats 31 different people and 2 dogs have come to the Sunday long runs. 35 different people have run up the Incline as a club workout. 44 people are on the e-mailing list.
