Howdy all...

This Sunday January the 14th at 8 a.m. is my special gift to all of you on
Valentines day! The goal for those that wish to take the challenge is a
four-peat on the Incline --> 8,000 feet of up, 8,000 feet of down!!! Ohhh
you gotta love it:-)

Of course there are some of you out there that want no part of this
sickness. In that case our regular club run would be up to Barr Camp and
then over to the Elk Park clearing and back. The four-peat is only an
option!!!!!!!!!!! Please don’t feel you have to write and say “my leg hurts
this, I have a race that, or can I just do one, two or three?” Its OK, we
understand --> this one is out there on the out there scale! You keep your
“I think you are a bunch of stupids”s to yourself and we’ll keep our “boy
are we a bunch of stupids”s to ourselves;-)

For the rest of us I am not claiming this is going to be easy but I am
certain that it will be fun — at least for a while. Word on the street is
we are crazy!? But hey, we are used to that aren’t we? What is new is that
now we have the distinction of being called crazy by some of our very own
club members:-) But hey, once in while it is good to do something a bit
gonzo just so the regular sick stuff we do doesn’t seem so bad.

Bring your own food, drink or whatever. If everyone who is going for it
brings some extra munchies we can make a heck of an aid station out of the
back of a truck or something. Keep your stuff in a bag and then add some to
the “club pile.”

To save a lot of time on the whole affair I recommend at the very least
taking the short-cut off of the top of the Incline. To find it, turn left
right after you get to the top. There is a trail that takes you way down
onto the Barr Trail and will cut perhaps 1 mile off of the trip down. It
will also spare the extra uphill that it would take to go the regular way.
For those who want even more adventure there is also the possibility of
going down the Incline. Either all the way or part of the way by getting on
or off the Incline from switch-back #12 of the Barr trail.

As for myself I plan to do a combination. I might go down the Barr Trail
(via the short-cut) once, down the first half of the Incline once, down only
the second half once, and go down it the whole way once. Just depends on how
ugly things get. There will be a fine line between saving time by coming
down the Incline and killing one’s quads. The trick will be finding out how
much damage is done by going down the Incline before the damage gets done:-)

And then there were 4... Four people are almost halfway to breaking Glen A’s
club long run streak record of 24.

While I was doing the backside of Waldo last Sunday, I picked up a black
right glove with “OR” embroidered on it. Maybe someone in the group dropped
it. If you know someone who reportedly lost one, let me know. If I’m there
this weekend, I’ll bring it, if not I’ll give it to AnneMarie W.

I’ve been following the incline club trials and tribulations with envy.
Sounds like everyone is having a good time. I miss my long Sunday runs on
the Peak, and hopefully, someday I can return.

Can you forward this update or pass this info to the club.

Benita continues to do fairly well at home. We finally are able to get her
to keep some food down and is putting on a little weight, and gaining
physical strength. Overall her status has not changed significantly. She
still is being fed through the tube in her stomach. She still is not
talking nor has regained cognitive and recognition abilities, but physically
she is doing great. She walks fairly well with guidance and we get her up
in the recliner every night to sit with the family.

Things have not settled down here at all, but Benita’s sister, Sylvia and
her 2 girls (4 & 5), are staying with us to watch Benita during the day.
She is a tremendous help and a Godsend. I couldn’t do this without her.
The PPRR continues to cook meals and provide some help Fri — Mon and help
from work comes Tues — Thur.

The outpouring of love and support from my friends is a wonderful blessing
and I could never begin to thank and repay everyone for their help,
thoughts, and prayers. Their strength and support have helped me keep
things together.

I have been running 4-5 days a week, and am feeling pretty good. It would
be nice to come out and do the fourpeat. We know what it was like to do a
threepeat, this is by no means a walk in the park and not for the weak at
heart and soul It should prove interesting to see how many can succeed.
Good luck to everyone.

Thanks again for everyone’s support and friendship.

Do one long run for me and I hope to run with you all again. Keep on
keeping on.

Your incline club friend,

Thom Santa Maria

2/7/99 34 people — our second largest group — and 4 K9s headed out the Ute
Indian Trail. If I was not there myself I would not have believed it if
someone had told me how nice it was for a February day. The perfect
conditions also helped a lot of people set some PRs for the killer loop. Not
as many were talking about how hard this loop was either. That could be due
to the fact that everyone is getting fit or they were talking about next
week’s four-peat on the Incline!!!
