Sunday, June 13th 8 a.m. meet by the Fountain on Spring Street 1/4 mile down
Ruxton from the COG RR depot.
Go out the Ute Indian Trail and at the T take a left up the service road.
A hundred yards later take the left at the fork in the road and head up
Longs Ranch Road until you meet up with the Barr Trail at No Name Creek.
Head up the Barr Trail to Barr Camp. Run down the Barr Trail back to the
parking area. 3 to 4 hours depending on speed.

Please note the change on the Sunday run. This is a substitution for the
Waldo loop. I have received several comments that weekend traffic has really
picked up on Hwy 24 and that people are having to wait for cars a lot more.
Also the heat is getting rather intense in the lower altitudes. As always we
are free to run wherever we want but I do not want to be in a situation of
having the club run be a run that has the added risks of an overheated and
dehydrated runner coming off of the Waldo loop and having to cross that busy
intersection. As they say: Death on a stick!
Hopefully the snow will melt soon and we can start doing the Elk Park run.

I have gotten several e-mails about the closing of the Incline. I got wind
of this back in January and went to the cog station to talk with Douglas
Doane the General Manager. The fact is the Incline was never open so it
can not be closed. They own the middle section of the Incline and they are
very concerned about the liability issue because of the increased use it has
seen over the last 2 years. He told me then that they were going to post it
and to date no signs have gone up. I asked if there was a way that instead
of posting it no trespassing they could post it this is private property
and is a potentially dangerous with sliding rocks etc... kind of an use at
your own risk type of thing. He said that even that implies that they OK it
and that brings up the liability issue again lawyers!!
My next proposal to him I feel will be the ultimate solution. It is a little
known fact that the COG also owns some of the land that the Barr Trail runs
on. They simply lease that land to the forest service. The same thing could
be done with the Incline Club land. This has awesome potential I feel
because we could create maintenance funds and have work days etc.
Bottom line the Incline situation is in the hands of the COG people. This is
why (once again) we as a club have tried to stay out of harms way of the COG
and their parking spots. This is also one of the reasons why we cut the
number of times we run on the Incline to once a month this year. These are
pro-active measures to stay on the good side of the COG. Otherwise my
personal stance is this: We can not put out a fire if there is no flame.
Trying to mount a cause or a protest before the fact seems pointless. They
seem to have adopted an we are not watching attitude at least for the
moment. I do feel that once it is closed there are so many that use this
thing (we are a small fraction of the people that go up it) that a keep
the Incline public campaign has potential. I have learned however that when
it comes to talking about work and doing work there is a big difference. It
remains to be seen how many will be willing to fix lose ties, attend
meetings, etc.

Lastly I want to apologize for the small e-mail reminders as of late and
warn you that they may even get smaller. (Of course after todays
write-o-thon you may be glad that they will be small again.) My racing
season is here and for the next 2 months I will be racing or sleeping (as
opposed to running and sleeping;-) so I am a bit stretched at the moment. I
assure you the club remains important to me and I am really excited about
the many great races so many of you have run.

Steve Bremner writes:
Im going up to Aspen to run the Fila Sky marathon this June 27th. I just
called the Inn at Aspen and they have studios with two queen size beds,
kitchen facilities and with mountain views for $111 (discounted from $185
for marathon runners). While a bit steep for me alone, I was wondering if
you could request via your newsletter if anyone is also going up there and
would like to share accommodations on the 26th. Thanks!

6/6/1999 Another race kept the group small with 1 dog and 10 runners heading
up the Barr Trail on a very hot day. There were tons of hikers on the trail
today. About 50 feet off the trail (near the current sign that reads: PIKES
PEAK SUMMIT 7.5, TOP OF INCLINE 2.5 which is located halfway between No
Name Creek and Barr Camp) I found a flat metal sign that we figure to be
about 60-70 years old!!! It reads: Rocky Mt Exp St 2, Cog Road 2. Although
it was 3/4 buried in the dirt under a tree it is still in great shape.
6/3/1999 A record tying 23 people took on the Incline on a very warm day.
Halfway up many felt like they were breathing trough sandpaper. That did not
stop 4 people from setting year PRs and 3 people from setting all-time PR
s. Yvonne F was the first to the top with a 1:03 PR. Lon R was second with
his 43 second PR. But it was Amy G who had the biggest PR of the day - 3:58
faster than last years effort - but she did not get the first to the top
spot because it was her first time for the year so she had to start with a
faster runner in the handicap system. 5 of us headed over and did some hill
work on the road leading to the Cave of the Winds afterward. Rich D became
the 5th fastest person up the Incline with his 20:49 effort.
5/30/1999 The holiday weekend and tomorrows Bolder Boulder 10K kept the
group at only 15 today. Non the less the weather was great again if not a
bit on the hot side. Trail reports are as follows: The last of the snow is
gone on Longs Ranch Road. On the Barr Trail getting to the Bottomless Pit
sign can be done without stepping on snow. From there the snow is patchy but
very well packed for the next 13 switch-backs with the odd switch-backs
(going South) having more snow on them. The last two switch-backs were being
shortcut again so I had to break trail from here to the 3-mile sign. From
there up the trail is buried in the deep stuff and everyone has been
bee-lining it to the top.
5/27/1999 14 people came out for 30 minutes of 1 minute hard, 1 minute easy.
Another damp trail day made for perfect conditions. 3 of us ran over to the
Cave of the Winds road and did a tempo run up that after the normal workout.
