Incline Club V3 TH #18 LR #37

Subject: Incline Club V3 TH #18 LR #37

Another big Sunday with 33 Incline Club members swarming all over the peak.
About half of the group started from the bottom working on splits.

****
Here is a case study of one runner:

This runner had not used the calculator before so it makes it even more
interesting to note how the splits matched up. Unfortunately this also meant
that they did not know where all the splits were. Even still it can be seen
that by trying to run an “even effort” the runner ended up VERY close to
the calculator.

He felt (and I would agree) that he went too fast to Hydro Street. What
would be interesting to know is if he got more ahead while getting to Ruxton
or while getting from Ruxton to Hydro.

On that note I am starting to hear a lot of people say things like: “I need
to go out fast to get ahead of the people who are running the race wrong and
dying.” What amazes me is that people keep a straight face when they say
this! Basically they are saying they want to be one of the people who run it
wrong!?

I think it is OK to go out a *little* bit fast until about Maramount Castle
but after that the road is too steep to continue to work on getting in front
of people. Done correctly, if you cut back from the Castle until Winter
Street you will be able to pick off a few more people going by the flatter
section by the COG and then on the flat section before the gate after
getting over the very ugly hill. This happens not so much by trying to speed
up but because to run an even effort you do speed up on the flats while
other people are having to recover! No matter what however, 1 minute at
Hydro is just too much! What people tend to forget is that they can get away
with this in training because they are not on the edge because the whole run
is slower. However on race day this same minute could cost them 5-10 minutes
a mile on the top because they went over the edge.

This runner made up a good deal of time (about 1 minute) getting from French
(No Name) to Barr Camp. This *could be* a very good sign that he was running
well within himself.

He lost some time (about 2 minutes) getting to the A-Frame. Perhaps knowing
this section of the course could help but I have not talked to the runner to
get his feelings. No matter, I recommend breaking this section into smaller
sections so that you know where you are at all times:

The wooden bridge is 1/2 way to the Bottomless Pit sign. The Bottomless Pit
sign is close to 1/3 of the total time to the A-frame. There are 15
switchbacks from the Bottomless Pit sign to the A-frame. The first
switchback takes about (it is less actually) another 1/3 of the total time
to the A-frame leaving you 2/3 of the way there. Counting the remaining
switchbacks lets you relax because you will not be thinking “how much
farther” etc. because when you get to #8 you will know there are still 7 to
go. You can see the A-frame from #11. The last half of the switch-backs on
average are MUCH shorter than the first half.

Looking past the A-frame the runner did not continue to lose time and had a
great last mile. His time from Barr Camp to the top was FASTER than his time
from the start to Barr Camp. People often say I am crazy for suggesting this
but with proper training up high (this runner has done it) I feel this is
the best way to run this course!!!!

The most important thing to remember however is that these are long sections
and a couple of minutes are not that big of deal on the grand scheme of
things!!! In fact this runner did what I would consider a perfect run!!! By
getting additional splits he will be able to keep better tabs on his race
without having to go so far before having to adjust.

Bottom line, although the calculator has been changed and modified after
dozens of runs, we all run a little different. It worked very well for this
runner and will enable him to come up with some splits for his goal time in
the race.
