I am writing to let you know that things are not looking well for Carl McDaniel and from what I am told it is just a matter of time. For those that do not know, Carl was the race director of the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon from 1980 through last year when he was diagnosed with cancer. Carl ran the race about 8 times and several of the books about the race show him crossing the line in 4:44:21 for 18th in the 1976 race. His dream was always to be able to run the race again someday but he always got too busy making sure things were done right so that the rest of us could run after our dreams. In addition Carl coached a cross country team and I was fortunate to attend a few of their workouts the kids really looked up to him and respected him. Yearly he would take the kids up to Barr Camp for a weekend of high altitude training. For those that know Carl he is at the Penrose main hospital in room 1012. The phone number is 776-3000. For those that dont know him or do not feel comfortable enough to call or visit, if you want you can give me or e-mail me your Pikes Peak stories and a thank you for his work and I will see that they get to him. Otherwise I would encourage you to drop by. There were several other runners in the room when I visited and although this is obviously a hard time we shared a few laughs and many memories. Indeed a great man who has put a lot of time in on the mountain. Go out hard, when it hurts speed up... Matt Carpenter www.skyrunner.com
