Hi,
Sorry this one is a bit late coming out on Friday after work but I ah,
well, I forgot:-O But dont cast this one aside I think (or at least
hope) you will find some good stuff below.

Keep the e-mails coming. I think when people share it is a better club!!!
Last Sunday was a big one with 33 runners despite the bad conditions. I was
really psyched to see so many newbies make it all the way to Barr Camp! I
think that is the most we ever had make it to the camp. Keep coming out and
keep getting better:-)

Sunday, January 16, 8 a.m. meet in the COG parking lot.
Run out the Ute Indian Trail and then cross Hwy 24 and do the Waldo Canyon
lollipop loop clockwise. Cross back over Hwy 24 (be careful) and head up
Longs Ranch which connects back into the Barr Trail at No Name Creek. Run
down the Barr Trail to finish the loop. 2.5-3.5 hours. Newbies skip Waldo
and head up Longs Ranch Road

Almost made it up Meeker Mt (13,911) on New Years day. Had to turn around
about 400 ft short of the summit at 2:15 PM. Still had to hike in the dark
for an hour. We lost the trail early on on the way up and had a slow time
picking our way through deadfall and 2-3 feet of snow. Our intention was to
make it up and over Meeker and up Longs. Now that I know the right way Im
sure I can do it in winter in 10-12 hours--both peaks.

Since I cant join you on every club run (I live in Fort Collins)
Ive decided to start the unofficial Incline Club of the North with
a member count of ...one.
Last year I used your club run program to tailor mine for this area.
Heres what I came up with:
INCLINE CLUB MIKES PLAN
1. Incline 1. Horsetooth mountain service road
1 mile hill climb 2 mile hill climb
2000+ feet 1000+feet takes me 27 min
2. Waldo loop 2. Fall River road in Rocky Mountain Park
Mid altitude trail run 10+ mile run all up hill topping out
10-13 miles at 12,000 feet. Takes me up to 2.5 hours.
3. Barr trail 3. Mt. Evans road.
High altitude run Runs can be anywhere from 4 to 28 miles!
14,000+feet 14,000+feet
Im doing the same training this year except for that Im starting earlier
and doing more of it(thanks to your motivational Club letters).
After seeing the Incline Members I know what I need to do to reach
my goal of 3:15 for the Ascent: lose the extra 20 pounds of fat on me!
It all boils down to Horsepower-to-weight ratio, i.e. the lighter runners
do better than heavier ones.
By the way, I think the Waldo loop is one awesome trail. Once you get to the
high point there is an incredible panoramic view of Pikes Peak that you cant
get on the Barr trail. When I ran it I had to stop a few times and take in the
view. THATs why it took me 3.5 hours to complete the run! :)

Just wanted to let you know that I did run every day for the 1 week of the
New Year. Actually, I tried to run twice a day, once in the morning (around
10am) and then again in the evening (I was on vacation).
Now that vacation is over, I am doing my best to keep running everyday. I do
find that I have trouble getting up at 5am to run. I am determined to get
up and run at 5am because I want to run in a marathon and most marathons are
started in the mornings.
I have never run in any races and I am looking forward to starting.

Can anybody in the club give me some information on running shoes with
cleats/studs. I was hoping to get input from people who have them. Did they
buy them or make their own?

Several have been using sheet metal screws and it works well for them. The
ones in the front of the shoe give you traction as you go up a hill and hit
ice. However it is the ones in your heel that save your butt when running
downhill. The December 1999 PPRR newsletter had some info on the process.
3/8 inch hex screws were used with about 8 being placed around the edge of
the shoe. This was a reprint from an old Runners World article so it has
been used by lots of people with good results. I will end the topic with the
following from Incline Club V2 LR3 back in December of 1997: Because there
is at least one lawyer among us, let me add this disclaimer: DO NOT USE
SCREWS THAT ARE TOO LONG OR YOU MAY GET HURT! We had one runner find out
the hard way:-O

Hello Matt, et al. I had an enjoyable run up Barr Trail this past
Sunday. Ive had a nagging hamstring problem for the past 3-4 months
which, amazingly, seemed to almost disappear the day after the run.
Maybe I need to join the Incline workouts (more than once per year) to
completely get rid of this thing?

would still win any team event!!!

WWW post:
1/9/2000 33 people and 3 dogs the largest group of the 2000 season
battled a very cold and bitter wind on our way to Barr Camp today. It was
really neat to see so many newbies make it all the way camp. Several of us
were quite warm on the first 13 switch-backs but as soon as we came over the
ridge it was hats, zippers, and hands pulled inside of sleeves. On some
sections of the Elk Park trail the wind covered our tracks with snow less
than 5 minutes after we passed through leaving some to wonder if there was
anyone ahead of them.

Go out hard, when it hurts speed up...
