Incline Club V4 LR #9 & Moonhike

Subject: Incline Club V4 #9 & Moonhike

Well since I got this out a day late last week I thought I would get it out
a day early this week. Actually I wanted to give you the heads up on another
moonlight hike event. Tomorrow (Thursday) night the full moon is expected to
turn brick red for more than hour in the first lunar eclipse visible
throughout the continental United States since September of 1996.
http://www.msnbc.com/local/RTCO/5194.asp. The Moonlight Madness club will
leave from the Barr Trail trail-head parking lot at 5pm. They usually have
their hikes on Friday but never pass up a good moonshow so have moved it to
Thursday this month. To learn more about the moonlight hikes go to their
homepage: http://www.pcisys.net/~rld/hike/. Four Incline Club members did the
hike last month under a super bright moon and it was awesome!

This Sunday, January 23, 8 a.m. meet in the COG parking lot.
Up to Barr Camp and out Elk Park to first bridge and back. 2.5-3.5 hours.
Newbies turn back at Barr Camp.

You can read all about it in the www post below but we had a record turnout
last Sunday with 41 runners! Many club members are really progressing
nicely and with the big groups there are more people at all levels. For
those that ran you may have seen a group of 4 or 5 women doing the Longs
Ranch Road loop backwards — they started by going UP the Incline no less
-- they said they would join us this Sunday on our trip to Barr Camp and
back.

RE: Studding shoes. Anyone interested can see me on Sunday and take a look
at mine. I’ve been using 1/2 inch large head sheet metal screws for the last
15 years with great results. Make sure you put them far enough to the edge
of the sole so they don’t poke through. I’ve also used 3/8” and they work
fine, but they come out faster than the 1/2.” They cost about $3.00 for a
box of 100 at the hardware store and I use 17 in each shoe. They go in best
with an electric screw driver and a hex bit but I have put them in manually
with a vice grip.

* Joe C did the Winter Series 10K and Brenda C did the 5K — they were left
off the list last week, sorry!

Saturday I made it up Meeker — 10 hours altogether, after my attempt on New
Year’s fell short. Decided not to go for Longs because of winds gusting to
50 MPH — I was less than enthused about the knife ridge from Meeker’s east
summit to its west summit in those conditions. Lots more snow this time
compared to New Year’s. Pretty difficult snowshoeing below timberline — at
times sinking 3 feet. The route from Meeker Park is a long haul — I estimate
14 miles round trip with about 5500 feet elevation gain. Lots of big scree
to pick your way through above timberline. All in all though a great day to
be up high!

For those that were not at the run I am happy to report that the Pikes Peak
book sale raised $806 for the Pikes Peak Trails and Open Space Coalition and
$762.33 for Friends of the Peak. Also I went to a FOTP meeting last week
after talking to several Incline Club members. The Incline Club has now
adopted the top mile of the Barr Trail:-) Since we are on that section a lot
during the summer and spend a fair amount of time just hanging out up there
it seemed like a logical move. It should work out great to put together a
few concerted efforts to fix a couple of the rough sections after we do our
Sunday long runs to the top. More on this later as summer approaches.

WWW post:

1/16/2000 We broke the all-time club attendance PR when 41 people and 3 dogs
showed for a Sunday run! It was awesome seeing that many out on a training
run. The top 23 on the workout board all came which is the most “*”s in a
row in over 3 years of keeping track. But most impressive of all was the
number of newbies and oldbies alike who did either Longs Ranch Road or Waldo
or even BOTH for the first time. Add to that some great weather and you have
a perfect run!
