Hi all,

Ever get those fun little jokes via e-mail — the ones that make you laugh
out loud — well never mind I am sure we have all gotten tons of them. At
any rate, this one had me laughing very hard and it is not even a joke and
even better it comes from an Incline Club member:-)

I thought you might like to hear what happened on my way back down Barr
Trail. I was running along (very slowly — my legs were beat) and I was about
1.5 miles from the parking lot. By this time of the day, a lot of hikers are
making their way up Barr Trail as we (Incline Club) are running down the
trail. I had passed a few hikers and I always say “Hi” or “Good-Morning.”
Two women are coming up the trail and I say “Hi” as I go by them. The second
woman shouts out to me “Hi Shit-Head.” I am still moving down the trail and
I can’t believe what she has said. On about my 3rd or 4th step past them, I
turn to first see if I know who they are. Just as I am about to ask “What
did you say to me!!” I take another running step and I suddenly realized she
said “Ice ahead.” I found myself sliding and out of control. I fell and
rolled onto my back. I couldn’t help but lie there and laugh. Luckily, I did
not get hurt and continued on. The two phrases do sound a lot alike......

This is your reminder that a little snow does not stop the Incline Club:-)
However because we run by time and not distance you may want to skip the
Waldo Section of the loop and instead just do the Longs Ranch Road loop. For
those that have yet to do Longs Ranch Road in deep snow now is your chance
to do the only run that I know of that will make you beg for it to stop!

Sunday, January 30, 8 a.m. meet in the COG parking lot.
Run out the Ute Indian Trail and then cross Hwy 24 and do the Waldo Canyon
lollipop loop clockwise. Cross back over Hwy 24 (be careful) and head up
Longs Ranch which connects back into the Barr Trail at No Name Creek. Run
down the Barr Trail to finish the loop. 2.5-3.5 hours. Newbies skip Waldo
and head up Longs Ranch Road.

An input regarding running on ice with traction:
I live at 9,000 ft. The dirt roads in my neighborhood are mostly snowpacked
and icy during wintertime, making traction an issue for typical running
shoes. I have used insole crampons, which strap on with a thick rubber band.
They work pretty well, though can move around while running — requiring
occasional repositioning. They can be used on hiking boots too, making
winter climbs easy if you don’t have “real” crampons. I found them at a
sporting goods store for $7 per pair.

I have also used sheet metal screws that I screwed into the bottom of a pair
of running shoes, but I don’t use nearly as many screws as Joe C. does: I
use seven in each shoe, and they seem to provide ample traction. I pre-drill
before inserting each screw.

Without these traction aids I was slipping and not enjoying my wintertime
workouts. Now I run without fear of losing traction on ice-it’s amazing how
much good one little thing can do. Happy trails.

I am temporarily putting up Orlando Velasquez, a 2:15 marathoner from
Venevuela, at my house for a month or so. He has been here working and
training for about 5 months and has had some amazingly back luck with rental
situations and financial situations. He got broken into and robbed, had to
break his lease since the apartment was costing him too much- loosing his
deposit and last month rent. This weekend he needed four wisdom teeth
extracted (out of pocket expense). This is just part of his bad luck.
Ideally he needs a room for rent in the $400-500 range. He has been living
with us for 2 weeks and we will let him stay with us till he gets
established. Do you know anyone down your way in the running community or
friends who are looking for a roommate. He is very easy to live with. he
leaves for work at 6am and goes to bed by 9. He cooks amazing food. I’m
trying all options to find a good situation for him. He has a realistic
shot at their Olympic Team and is training for their trials at Boston.
Hope your training is going well and let me know if you have any ideas for
him.

Let me know if you or someone you know can help out Orlando and I will pass
it on to Mark

Just wanted to let you know that last Sunday there were 6 of us (Bonnie
Moeder, Marilyn Weisinger, Gail Carson, Debbie Myers, Doug McKittrick and
Mikita Miller) who met at 7:30 at the Cog Parking lot and did Ute Indian to
Longs Ranch Road down Barr Trail. Not sure if you want to include us as a
point or not, but thought you might want to mention it. It was a great day,
the trail was still snowy and a bit crusty but really not too bad. It was a
first for Gail, Debbie, Doug and Mikita and they thought it was awesome.

WWW Post:
1/23/2000 35 people (not counting the LRR group of 6) and 2 dogs went for a
run to Barr Camp today. It was like 2 different runs. First a warm run to No
Name Creek and then a cold windy run to Barr Camp. Add in the ice factor for
the 2nd half and it was tough going - except for those of us who filled our
shoes with sheet metal screws:-) The top 18 on the workout board all made it
this weekend but at least this week there were some changes in the top 20.
