Run out the Ute Indian Trail and then cross Hwy 24 and do the Waldo Canyon lollipop loop clockwise. Cross back over Hwy 24 (be careful) and head up Longs Ranch which connects back into the Barr Trail at No Name Creek. Run down the Barr Trail to finish the loop. 2.5-3.5 hours. Newbies skip Waldo and head up Longs Ranch Road. Make a note on how long it takes you to get to Waldo for next weeks wedding run:-) #### John ONeill writes: For all those who are interested we will be starting circuit training at the Manitou High School track on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 5:30pm. This will be the first week of an 8 week program that will make you more flexible and a lot stronger. Come on out what do you have to lose but time off your races? ALSO, THE RUMOR IS TRUE! WE WILL BE OPENING A NEW RUNNING STORE (with your help) SOON. LOCATION IS STILL IN THE WORKS. GIVE US YOUR FEEDBACK, PLEASE!!! (e-mail address removed for www posting) (Circuits are things like bounding, skipping, etc that help the body gear up for the speed workouts and faster running we start in Aprilish these are NOT speed workouts but are an important part of an overall program. Now is your chance to have a voice into the makings of running store be heard!) #### Tom K writes: After taking the previous Sunday (1/30/00) off from the Incline Club run (we were recovering from a 10k race we did down in Pueblo the previous day), Laura and I were back tanned, rested, and ready to join all the other happy, smiling faces for the run up Barr trail yesterday morning. It was a glorious morning (unless you were Neal and Teresa Taylor recovering from a late night/early morning birthday celebration Teresas 40th!). This was the first run where I really had the chance to try out my studded running shoes. I was very impressed at just how effective these are on ice and hard-packed snow, but I guess it doesnt take a Rocket Scientist to reach this conclusion. You really gain an appreciation for them though if youve ever taken a tumble on ice as I did several times on the previous Barr Trail run (Keith, I had no benefit of forewarning). They reduced the amount of work and mental stress associated with running on those surfaces, and I didnt fall once yesterday! Laura and I had a great run. The footing conditions above French Creek to Barr camp were much nicer than I had expected them to be, with a nice surface of relatively stable, packed snow covering the old ice. On the way down, Laura and I opted for the extension over Mt Manitou and back down Long Ranch Rd, and back home on Ute. It was a bit mushy and muddy in the bare spots going up over the hill to Long Ranch, but once over the top, the conditions were a much nicer. There was a packed part of the trail, but also fresh powdered snow off to the side which made plunge stepping down the steeper parts of Long a lot of fun, and fast. Once down lower, and on Ute, the condition were warmer and, again, muddy and mushy. For those of you who have run Ute trail in the opposite direction from the one we normally go, Im sure you are already convinced, as I am, that its mostly up hill no matter which direction you run it! Sorry this is so long, but I just wanted you to know what a great run we had. And after only 3-4 Incline Club runs, Im already beginning to feel stronger. A question: what is the approximate distance for the route that includes the turn-around at Barr, and the Long Ranch extension on the way down? (Oh we could call it 15ish I think but we go by time) #### Kevin C writes: Southern Colorado rocked at Las Vegas yesterday. Check out http://www.lvmarathon.com. Men: Marathon: Paul Koch, Dan Vega, Paul Sullivan (big PR) were all fast. Half Marathon: Paul DeWitt ripped a 1:11 and change. I saw him at the beginning for all of about 60 seconds, and he was gone. I cruised a much more pedestrian pace, but still was 4+ minutes ahead of my target time. This is a very fast half for those who are interested in setting PRs! Women: Made Tormeon qualified for the Olympic Trials in the womens marathon. Traci Dworshak, Linda Reeg and Peg Roddy-Reeg all qualified for the Boston Marathon easily. There were a number of other names from Pueblo/Springs that I did not recognize....... Fast yes, scenic no. This should get some kind of award as one of the ugliest marathon courses in the country. :-) #### After my comments about finishing our run with the Ute Indian trail instead of our usual downhill cruise Carol S wrote: I think we need to start a new category for Incline Club sayings: In the Category of You Might Be in Trouble When... ...you hear Matt Carpenter say OK, you guys are going to have to REALLY run...dont just depend on gravity to take you down the hills ! In the Category of New Definitions FALSE Running When the rate of your downhill speed is determined ONLY by the effect of gravity. ---- One more item: a Trail Runners Song, for the tired and weary ones. Sung to the tune of the Seven Dwarvess Song, Hi Ho, Hi Ho Hi Ho, Hi Ho, Its Down the Trail I go. No time to Slack, No time to Whine. Hi Ho, Hi Ho, Hi Ho. Hi Ho, Hi Ho. Get Down the Trail and GO ! Dont be a Wimp, just get up and GO ! Hi Ho, Hi Ho. (Can also substitute the word UP for Down, depending on the direction you are traveling.) #### Marty T writes: I dont know how many people know district 20 Principal Linda Macy, she was on the news the evening of 2-8-00. (need to reconfirm) Joe C Kelly M Larry M Matt C Yvonne F #### WWW post: 2/6/2000 Even with several members missing do the Las Vegas Marathon and Half Marathon we still had another large group with 35 people and 5 dogs showing up for some great weather and a trip to Barr Camp. On the way down several club runners came down Longs Ranch Road to add some time to the run since it is a new month. From the sound of it they had a lot of fun coming down the evil hills for a change. The rest of us had to put up with the ice that has formed throughout the week thanks to a couple of warm days and cold nights. All seemed to hate it and I must say I agree. But after many seasons of this I know how neat it be when the ice and snow are gone and these same runs will seem like a joke:-) After 6 weeks without a change Keith G took over the top spot on the workout board. #### Go out hard, when it hurts speed up...
