The grass in my yard is starting to turn green!!! I know better than to
think we are done with the ugly stuff but this weather, as of late, has just
been AWESOME. Once again I am getting this e-mail out on a Friday but at
least this time I have a “real” excuse. It went live last night and it is my
first ASP/ODBC/SQL code and OK, I admit it, I am proud of it — sue me!!!

This Sunday, March 12, 8 a.m. meet in the COG parking lot.
Up to Barr Camp and out Elk Park to the clearing and back. 3-3.5 hours.
Newbies turn back at Barr Camp. Come down Longs Ranch Road and back via the
Ute Indian Trail to add on some time.

We have not had much success this year getting out Elk Park for our extra
time. In fact, the whole Barr Camp run has been rough this year but hang in
there! Once again the warm weather could make for some bad ice on the top
half of the run!!!

Found: A Pikes Peak Marathon glove on the Waldo Loop on Sunday, 3/5.
Please see Tom K next Sunday if it’s yours.

Also Found: Piece of Fila t-shirt in mud puddle on Long Ranch Rd. If you
can identify the piece (right sleeve, left sleeve, or middle), it’s yours!

(Gee, and I thought they would like their free shirt;-)

Saw you wanted to count how many in the Incline Club were going to Boston
this year. I am — qualified in Austin’s Motorola Marathon by 11 seconds
for my age group! Also my wife, Carol (non-member), qualified by 12 minutes
in her age group and will run Boston too.

One month shy of my 45th birthday in the March 5th Napa Valley Marathon — my
31st marathon — I ran a PR of by over a minute in 2:36:23, placing 6th
overall and 2nd master’s. I didn’t expect to run that fast this early in the
season. I had thought low 2:40’s was reasonable, but the runners out ahead
of me were like an irresistible force, pulling me towards them like a magnet
as I moved up steadily from 9th to 6th over the last half of the race.

It rained all night Saturday before the race, but by the time we lined up to
start it had rained itself out. Overcast, with temperatures around 50,
conditions were ideal. A slight drizzle for the last 15 minutes of the race
was a welcome cool off.

I credit it to the Incline Club trail running I’ve been doing since November
of last year. Every Sunday we run for between 2-3 hours at altitudes from
6500 feet to 10,000 feet. I felt very strong through 23 miles, afterwards
only slowing to an average of 6:20 miles to the finish.

With this early success I hope to run under 2:35 the Boston Marathon next
month.

3/5/2000 Another group of 38 took out the K9 record today when 9 dogs showed
for the Waldo loop. Weather was perfect for running with only a few bad
patches of ice to deal with although there was still a good amount of snow
left on Longs Ranch Road. Kees G, Louise E and Neal T received A T-shirt
today for their pasta antics. Loop times are dropping big-time as many are
getting really strong after more than 3 months of killer long runs.
