Sent: Thursday, April 13, 2000 2:19 PM Subject: Incline Club V4 TH #2 LR #21 Am I cutting it close on this one or what? In about 3.25 hours I hope you will be ready to join the pain gang! We will meet at Soda Springs Park at 5:30 p.m. and do a warm-up to Hydro Street. From there we will be doing 30 minutes of 1 minute hard, 1 minute easy. Run easy back down and then do 4-6 Hydro Street Hill repeats. Finally cool down back to Soda Springs Park. Now I realize that for those that get your mail at home you will be reading the above in the past tense. Seems like I am saying sorry a lot more lately but I have just been slammed this week sorry! In the future if I mess up again and you need to know what is going on dont forget the workouts are always posted in advance on the club page at http://www.skyrunner.com/incline.htm #### Sunday, April 16, 8 a.m. meet at Soda Springs Park. Run out the Ute Indian Trail and then cross Hwy 24 and do the Waldo Canyon lollipop loop clockwise. Cross back over Hwy 24 (be careful) and head up Longs Ranch which connects back into the Barr Trail at No Name Creek. Run down the Barr Trail to finish the loop. 2.5-3.5 hours. Newbies skip Waldo and head up Longs Ranch Road. Teresa T adds: We plan on doing the van feed Sunday. Neal T, the pancake man, is ready to create Incline cakes that will re-fortify the weariest runner! Bagels, juice, and PBJ and Banana sandwiches:-) will round out the menu. Yumbo! ---- If you can help Neal and Teresa out by bringing something good to eat or drink that would be great! There looks to be hole in the weather pattern to sneak this off but if not we have the cover of the park now:-) Again for those that have not been to Soda Springs Park it is on the East side of Manitou Avenue directly across from where you would turn to go up Ruxton Avenue heading for the COG. When driving though Manitou it is best to take the right on Canyon Avenue off of Manitou Avenue and that way you can park on the East side of the park. #### Rick H and Paul D report: Our newest club member made it to the top of the peak: http://www.gazette.com/archive/00-04-11/daily/loc4.html #### Carol S writes: Thought I would send you some race results from this past Saturday, for the Mile High Metric Challenge, at Chatfield Park in Littleton, Colorado. I know of at least three Incline Clubbers who participated in this event me, Anita Bowers (a Newbie), and Keith Grimes. Anita and I both did the 75K (thats 7.5 10Ks or 46.6 miles). Anita finished #2 for the women overall, and #1 in the 20-29 age group, with a time of 10:14:00. I finished #3 for the women overall, and #2 in the 40-49 age group, with a time of 11:08:00. Keith finished the 50K event with a time of 4:37:51, in 5th place overall, and in 1st place for the 40-49 mens age group. Some special notes: 1) This is the furthest distance that Anita and I have ever run. 2) Keith started late, as there was an accident on the highway as he was driving up for the race. He passed me between the 3rd and 4th mile, and was really cruising! 3) I think we were all slowed down a bit, as it was really HOT, and you know we are used to running knee deep in snow vs. running with sunscreen covered bodies! #### Keith G writes: Just thought I would pass this onto to you and the Incline Club. Performance Bicycle Shops are having a spring sale from April 12th April 25th. One item I noticed was a heart rate monitor Polar Beat HR Monitor which is now only $39.99. This is just a basic monitor, but at that price, it could be a great training aid. #### Jamie M writes: About a quarter after five yesterday afternoon, my normal aches and pains took on increased severity and I started getting real tired. Needless to say, I didnt make it to yesterdays first Incline run of the year, (and my first ever attempt at scaling the scar). Today, I had guilt. So, at about 10:30AM, I drove over to Manitou, got out my car, and started running. It wasnt long before the running turned to fast walking. And, not long after that, the fast walking turned to slow walking. When the slow walking turned to scrambling on all fours, (near the fake summit), I started composing this e-mail to you, so that, at least, you would have a telepathic transcript of what happened to Jamie M. Toughest 36 minutes and 13 seconds that I can ever remember enduring. The feeling at the top was indescribable. The run down Barr Trail was better. Wear gloves. (If you did not make it last Thursday you missed a truly awesome Incline spectacle! 47 (club PR) people showed up and 44 (another club PR) of us headed up the Incline not counting another near dozen who were not with the club although I managed to recruit about 5 of them. Several commented on how cool it was to be running with so many people in a training run and I have to agree! I was even more impressed by how many remembered to do the Hydro repeats and the number of people who did 6 given the option of 4-6. This club is a sick club for sure!!!) #### Kevin C writes: While doing Boston will be fun and all, I can barely wait to run with the group again on Sunday 4/23. Training long on flats is BORING, BORING, BORING once you get hooked on the trails. I miss snow. I miss trees. Hell, at this point I even miss falling down. The only interesting thing that has happened while running in the last couple of weeks was almost getting run over by a tourist in a Winnabeggo on the Air Force Academy (they were gawking at the Thunderbird by the south entrance). A split second from being a Kansas hood ornament. Enjoy the mountain, and I will see you all soon! #### Duncan B writes: Thanks for including me on the Incline Club list. Although living in new Hampshire, it is a bit of a treat seeing how you western runners raise the stakes. #### Congrats to Joe C who, along with myself, became the last club member to have run everyday this year at least as far as I know. Joe was one of only two people (Val S was the other) to start the year off with an Incline PR. Dan V dropped off the list last Saturday but has vowed to start a new streak! #### Tom K writes: After a three week absence (two missed Incline workouts), we returned this past week as promised, tanned, rested (lots of that), and ready to resume Incline training. We very much appreciate whoever arranged to get rid of most of the snow and ice on the trails while we were gone (sorry Neal). Laura L and I had a fun, relaxing time in South Carolina visiting my crazy relatives (Im the normal one) and crazy friends (I tolerate them). The weather was mild and sunny, except for one day of rain, and all of the flowers were out in their glory. The Cooper River Bridge 10K run was an incidental activity, but a fun and exciting event none the less with over 30,000 runners and walkers. The elite Kenyans (including the 10K world record holder) were there in force, taking most of the top prizes. The mens winner was Reuben Cheruiyot who finished in a course record 27 min 50 sec. The conditions were a bit warm for my taste, but I still managed to finish in a respectable 36 min 41 sec. Though not a PR, its the fastest 10K time Ive run in the past 10 years, so I was happy enough. I was actually leading at one point, but I had to stop and tie my shoe which took me 8 min 52 sec (@!$*^ chip). The winner in my age category (40-44) was Mefumbly Mbabypoo in a time of 29 min 13 sec (OK, I made the name up, but I think its close, and the time is for real!). On the womens side, the winner was Sally Barosio in a time of 31 min 42 sec. Laura L was aiming to finish just over 40 minutes and barely met her goal, finishing in a time of 40 min and 2 sec. Congratulations Laura! (@*&$^#* chip! I told her to throw it across the finish line if it was close). The top women in Lauras age group (20-25) was Colon DeRucksack in a time of 32 min 9 sec. Now for some serious business, we have (another) public service announcement to make: Evidently, we are now the official Incline Club garment clearing house as yet another article of clothing was found during last Sundays run, and we were asked to help locate the owner. This article is black, it looks like a glove, but it has The Athletes Foot printed on it, so it also might be a sock ( though a very anthropologically incorrect sock), or, it also could belong to an Incline cow since they, to my knowledge, have not yet been banned from running Barr Trail, as long as they remain on a leash, but we wont go there since (a) this is a controversial subject, (B) these e-mails are supposed to remain PG in content, and (3.14) I think there might be an Incline member who is an Animal Offender Probation Officer and I dont want to start anything. In any case, if this garment belongs to you, you belong in a zoo! Ha-ha-ha, just kidding. If you would like to retrieve this garment, we will bring it to the next Incline workout and you can take it off our hands (feet, whatever...). Sinceriously, The Garment Guys (AKA Tom K & Laura L) #### www posts: 4/9/2000 39 people came out for a Sunday long run. Barr Camp was the destination but 6 of us opted for a run to Lake Moraine at 10,200. Barr Trail is still bad in several spots getting to Barr Camp. Judy D was the club blood donor today with a nice knee shot that even spotted her shoes. This was the first run from Soda Springs Park and it was an awesome day for it. Picnic tables were put to good use under the mid day sun after the run. 4/6/2000 All time group records were smashed today when 47 people came to the first Thursday run of the season. 44 of them headed up the Incline which is also a record. Val S and Joe C were the only two to start the year off with all time PRs. It is so easy to forget just how bad that little hill can hurt but halfway up it seems to almost take pleasure in reminding you that the Incline RULES! it was exciting having this many people and this much energy all focused on a common goal. Dont forget from here on out all runs will meet a Soda Springs Park because the COG opens next week. #### Go out hard, when it hurts speed up... Matt Carpenter http://www.skyrunner.com
