Can you believe the size of the groups the last couple of runs? 52 on
Thursday was incredible!!! Check out the www posts at the end of this mail
for the number of people who improved their Incline times for the year.
Sunday it was neat to hear so many talking about PRs to Barr Camp --
AWESOME!

Just wanted to thank you for the opportunity to run with a group this
morning. Most of my training is alone. I do enjoy running trails,
although my first love is the roads.

Well, I’d be well paid in major league baseball if my batting average
was similar to my average on the Barr Trail this year. Three runs to
Barr Camp and three falls plus one near fall after rolling my ankle! Oh
yes, I also fell in the Garden of the Gods earlier after one of those
slippery snow storms. Not bad for a guy who has previously fallen twice
in a 32 year running career!

I must apologize for my rather surly mood after this morning’s run,
especially to the female runner who stopped briefly just above Ruxton
Ave. on the way down. She was trying to make sure I was OK after turning
that left ankle, but I was in no mood to be particularly gracious.
Seeing as you probably know who this female runner is, would you kindly
pass my apology to her?

Seems I made three mistakes today. Wore some New Balance wear-test shoes
that fit rather loosely. Then I was tired from a strong 18 miles the day
before leading to slightly rubbery legs from the start. Finally, I ran
too hard an effort, all things considered, to hang on to you guys.
Moving my family down to the Springs from Fort Collins doesn’t help the
arms, shoulders and general energy level any either. In the end, the
loose trail gravel got me twice on the descent.

So, that is my poor-me story for today. Back to training on the roads of
the Garden after the ankle heals up, hopefully in a couple or three
days. The injury appears to be completely external to the ankle/foot
bones. The repercussions from the fall are inconsequential.

I’ll be back to take my chances again on that trail — the challenge being
foremost to make a clean ascent/descent!

Best of training to you and all the Incline folk.

And the biggie!!! Kelly Mortenson ran a smart Olympic Trials race to end up
12th overall! Kelly, for those that do not remember, often did his winter
base work with the club before hitting the roads in the summer. In 1998 he
did 19 Sunday runs with us. Last year he ran with us 14 Sundays and this
year 9 Sundays before he moved back to Minnesota. Kelly said he was in about
70th place at 5 miles!!! Here is an article on his race:
http://www.pioneerplanet.com/outdoors/rec_docs/037422.htm

Incidentally, two other runners who have run with the club were in the
Trials. Teddy Mitchell who ran with us on a number of Thursdays last year
got 10th overall and Scott Gall who visited us once this year got 59th. 7
Colorado runners were in the top 15!!!! Word is that Scott will be running
with the club a lot now that the trials are over.

Richard D has been running some of our runs with his GPS. About a week ago
the US government stopped sending out a fudge factor in the signals so they
are much more accurate now. I will work on posting some maps of our runs as
they are truly incredible!

Sign-ups for the Barr Trail Mountain Race are going well — thanks to those
of you who have already registered! http://www.runpikespeak.com

www posts:
5/7/2000 42 enjoyed perfect weather for a trip up the Barr Trail. ALL the
snow is gone to Barr Camp and there were only a few patches of snow to step
on getting to the Bottomless Pit sign. After that the snow gets pretty bad.
Still, this is WAY ahead of last year! Many Incline Clubbers were talking
about their PR runs to Barr Camp today - all the sick training in the winter
is starting to pay off big time. Incline Club member Kelly Mortenson ran a
great race and got 12th in the Olympic Trials today. Kelly had done 9 runs
with us this season before he moved back to Minnesota.

5/4/2000 How do you spell RECORDS - Thursdays on the Incline! 52 people came
out today smashing the old club record by 5! Next, out of the 27 people who
did the Incline last month 20 set year PRs Today. Valerie P also set an
all-time PR. Ben C won the handicap race to the top with a 2:30 PR but John
C was only 2 seconds back with a 2:28 PR. Keith G and Kees G tied for 3rd
with 1:13 PRs. In the > 35:00 slot 11 year-old Dave G knocked of an
incredible 9:40!!! Kim G -5:04, Mary H -2:23 and Anita B -2:19 also set some
awesome PRs! To be honest I don’t know how anybody set a PR on this 85
degree scorcher of a day!
