Subject: Incline Club V4 TH #12 LR #31
The Incline Club was all over the summit last Sunday! All and all 35 of us
made it to the top one way or another. Hopefully the line at the toll booth
will be a little quicker now that a lot of people bought their Peak Passes,
but who knows?
####
Thursday, June 22, 5:30 p.m. meet at Soda Springs Park.
10 repeats or 40 minutes of Hwy 24 bypass whichever comes first.
Sunday, June 25, 7 a.m. meet just past the Pikes Peak Toll Booth.
Elk Park Trail to Barr Camp then to the summit 2-4 hours.
####
We have already put in 9 of our required 30 hours on our mile of the Barr
Trail. For those that dont remember on January 11th the Incline Club
adopted the top mile of the Barr Trail. So far we have done two Spring
Cleanings covering 3/4 of our mile and this weekend weather
permitting we should get to the last 1/4 mile to finish the Spring
Cleaning phase. Hopefully we can also bring up that abandoned trash can that
is laying off the side of our mile. After that we will pick out a couple of
the more rocky spots and concentrate on them. I got permission to store some
tools in the summit house which will help in our efforts.

So my curiosity is why state 4-6 hydro repeats in the workout? I dont know
anyone who is getting away with just 4 myself included. I tried, very
unsuccessfully, to get away with 2 and figured, ok, I could do the minimum
of 4, but no, chastised, with head hanging low after a mere 4, not possible
to return to Soda Springs Park a defeated four peater. Instead, back up
again for 2 to make the even half dozen. I know there are others trying to
sneak away with 4...a few weeks ago Paul D had the encouragement of wife
Judy D and begrudgingly did the additional 2... I think we egged Dan V on in
similar fashion. Whats the buzz, 4, 6 or maybe more? Who would like to do a
Hydro challenge how many repeats can be done before a runners demise?
(Thanks to Glen A, the issue is moot the new minimum is 10!)

We got a ride down the peak from one of the motorcycle racers in the
upcoming PPIHC. He was going up and down the mountain looking over the turns
and the condition of the highway. It was funny because we had just stepped
out to get a ride when this PU went by and made a U-turn and then stopped.
We all got in one in the cab and 3 in the back. He went down without
using his brakes and was stopping and looking at everything. Keep Running!
(OK I have to ask: If he did not use his brakes how did he stop to look at
things?)

Sooo, can I get credit if I start early and finish as you guys are starting?
Im terribly out of shape and am trying to ease myself back in. As long as
you see me out there somewhere do I get a star? Sounds like the group is
going gung ho! I am glad for you and all the runners that are improving. I
will try and not get depressed by their speed and grace!
(Again the * rule goes something like this: As long as someone in the main
group sees you during the regular timeframe you get the *. This means you
can start early or late but not too much of either;-) Now that we have a
group doing Elk Park and a group starting from the bottom it becomes really
important to check the board once in a while to see if you got your *.
Remember 25 *s (combined for Thursday and Sunday) gets you the club award
at the end of season party sometime in August.)

In LR #29 Tom K made a recommendation for all those having encounters with
reptiles to contact the club slimy reptile offender Probation Officer with
specific data. Some believed he was calling one of the club members a slimy
something or another. Once confronted he corrected this. However, he seemed
less then sincere. Maybe Tom K should show a little more sincerity since he
is asking for my protection. By the way Tom K you realize you are asking a
girl to protect you??? Now for the second week in a row Tom K is focusing on
reptiles. This warrants investigation. Is Tom K unreasonably fearful of
reptiles?
And: {probation officer can be re-arranged to spell cite proof of
brain?).} Can I just tell you Tom K, you have way too much time on your
hands. Get a second job, better yet, take a self-defense course to protect
yourself from those scary, scary, reptiles.
In a previous message I requested, somewhat sarcastically, how long ago
David E had placed in the coveted top 10 on the Peak. Thank you Matt C for
letting me know it was last year and several years in the past. I ate crow
and it tasted bad. David E was kind enough to push me up to Barr Camp last
Sunday and I had my best time this year. He amazingly enough solved my water
system problem as well. A huge thank you from me to you, David E.
One last thing, (my messages are starting to look as long as Tom Ks, my
apologies to all for that. I promise to keep it short.) David E did report
back to me that he saw a human reptile-like person moving rocks on his way
up to the top. Was that Tom K and was he under the rocks? Or was he
transporting some of those rocks to another location, maybe his home?? My
investigation has not concluded, I will keep you all posted.

I had a great run up the Peak Sunday (from Elk Park), and felt a lot better
than I did on last weeks round-trip. After an hour of moving rocks near
the top though, I did begin to feel dizzy and not quite so good, which I
attribute to not adequately re-hydrating after getting to the top. I did
sweat a lot getting there. Acclimation, make it work for you!
Thanks to Kevin C for the car lift up to Elk Park and back. Sorry to hear
that youre moving away from the area. Good luck!
Poor Dave S... he acquired what has to be at least his third ouch on
Sundays run another leg wound. And he still kept plugging away till he
got to the top of the Peak. I think he deserves some kind of award. Or
maybe a box of bandages?

My result for the GOG 10-mile: 64th male, 13th in age 40-45, 69:19. This was
a 4+ minute PR for me thanks to a more consistent training schedule and more
high quality (club) workouts. Thanks for the motivation!

www posts:
6/18/2000 36 people came out with all but one making it to the summit today.
Most of us started from Elk Park our first for the year but a few hardy
souls (and soles) came from the bottom. Quite a few made the summit for the
first time ever and many got their first taste of Elk Park Trail. Once again
a group of us headed back down for some trail work. Craig B, Rick H, John G,
Matt C, Steve B, Steve S and Tom K started at the 16 Golden Stairs sign and
worked down the next 1/4 mile. We dodged the weather bullet because when we
finally did leave the sky came snowing/raining down:-)
6/15/2000 46 people did a tempo run up the Barr Trail from Hydro Street.
Quite a few said that they got farther than they ever have for the workout.
Afterward Glen A raised the pain level to 9 Hydro Street repeats thereby
forcing some of us to do 10 the new minimum. Dont blame me, blame Glen!
In other news, the Incline controversy made the paper again today. While not
perfect, the Incline Club has run on the Incline only 3 times out of 47 club
runs in the past 10 months. Also since the COG opened for the season we have
never parked in their lots and we moved our meeting space almost a mile away
to Soda Springs Park.
6/11/2000 Another weekend of races did not stop 29 people from heading up
the Barr Trail. About half the group made it to the top! There was only
about 4-5 steps in snow the WHOLE way up:-) 7 of us (Craig B, John C, Matt
C, Neal T, Robin F, Steve B and Tom K) cleared rocks from the top down to
the 16 Golden Stairs sign. It was a perfect way to get in some more time in
the thin air.
