While winter has just gotten started at least the days are getting longer! As some of you may know last Thursday was the shortest day of the year and here it is only a week later and we have already got back 10 extra minutes:-) Otherwise not a lot to post this week because of the holidays — hope Santa was kind to all of you!!!

####
Sunday, December 31, 8 a.m. meet at Soda Springs Park.
Run out the Ute Pass Trail and turn left and then go straight and head up Longs Ranch Road. Exit off Longs Ranch Road right and run up Bob’s road which connects back into the Barr Trail about 1.5 miles above No Name Creek. Run down the Barr Trail to finish the loop. 2-3 hours. If it would take longer cut off Bob’s road or do an out/back instead of the whole loop!

OR

Since on the 7th we will be combining Waldo and Longs Ranch Road you may want to head up towards Barr Camp so you don’t end up doing Longs Ranch Road two weeks in a row. I am going to bring my GPS to scope out the trail that goes to the right of the 1/2 mile to Barr Camp sign. All the topo maps show a trail that goes over about a 1/2 mile and then turns left and heads into Elk Park Trail which could make for a nice little loop. If one were to turn right instead of left it also looks possible to connect back down into the 7.8 mile sign which could make for a really neat way to get to Barr Camp. We shall see.

Tried out my GPS for only the second time when we did the Long’s Ranch run. I am slowly getting the hang of using it and just Xmas eve got the software and cables needed to download info to my computer. Here is some info on the Long’s Ranch run. I did not do the additional section off of Longs. I ran Longs down to No-Name Creek then did the Water Pipe loop.

First, I started the GPS at Soda Springs park. On Ute Pass Trail, at the top of one of the climbs there is a “NO TRESPASSING” sign...at this point we have climbed ~1040ft. I am not sure of the distance to this point (still learning how to get all the data out of the software). By the time we hit Long’s Ranch Rd, I am pretty sure we have climbed a total of ~1400ft. I will have to check this again. At the base of the VERY steep part of Long’s Rd when you turn the corner and see the first steep section you have traveled 5.0 miles and have climbed a total of 2000ft. By the time you get to the very top, you have climbed 3030ft and have traveled ~6.25 miles. At No-Name you are at ~7.0 miles and ~3040ft total elevation gain.

The Water Pipe Loop adds another 3.15 to 3.2 miles and another 960ft of elevation gain.

My GPS batteries ran low at this point and I could not measure the return back from No-Name Creek. I am inclosing the elevation profile of the Ute + Longs + Water Pipe trails.

Bottom line: Just over 4000ft of elevation gain and about 10.2 miles of trail.

(Matt C adds: From No Name back to the park is about 3.5 miles bringing Keith’s loop to just under 14 miles.)

Sunday the 24th was my third Incline run, kicking myself for missing the first two. I find myself looking more-and-more forward to Sunday mornings (even with the Waldo/Longs Ranch Road combination looming a few weeks off). Thanks for the advise of wading into the icy creek back at Soda Springs, my ankle feels great! Since Sunday I keep thinking about the black Lab that belonged to newbie Jim (I think), has anyone heard if the dog finally turned up — or was found?

(Matt C adds: The dog was reported to have made it back across hwy 24 from Waldo. I have heard nothing else.)

12/23/2000 45 people showed the day before x-mas for the Waldo loop. I thought with the holiday we would get far less so this was a pleasant surprise. Many had their fastest Waldo loop time ever. Although it was a bit cold to stand around the temperature was pretty good for running. Larry M and Rick H both wore shorts but with these two that is not saying it was warm or anything. Larry once again brought a box full of Granola Bars to munch on after the run. Even with the cold, hanging out after the run is becoming the norm.
