You survived!!! If you are getting this e-mail it means that you survived the e-mail purge! The purge was very effective in that the list is now about half it’s size — although a 2nd purge notice went out today for the procrastinators and as I write this the “good” list is growing rather fast;-) Thanks for sticking around!

In the running department you will note that the Sunday run is again up the Barr Trail. As much as some of us like the Williams Canyon run we can no longer use the ice/snow as an excuse not to get our butts up into the thin air! The PPA/PPM are only 3 months away you know and the BTMR is just 2 months away!!! Current trail conditions up to the A-frame are in the www post section below.

Thursday, May 17, 5:30 p.m. meet at Soda Springs Park.
Warm-up to Hydro Street. 30 minutes of 1 minute hard, 1 minute easy up the Barr Trail. Easy down. 4 X Hydro Street Hill. Cool down back to park.

Sunday, May 20, 8 a.m. meet at Soda Springs Park.
Run up the Barr Trail to the A-frame or until you reach your time limit. Head back down Barr Trail to finish the run. 2.5-3.5 hours.

Shirt report:
Yvonne C reports:
So far 153 shirts have been ordered with only 44 of them being T-shirts — the rest are all CoolMax/DriTek. I plan on taking the order into the Colorado Running Company on Friday so if you have not ordered your shirt please do so by Thursday night the 17th. Also if you could start bringing your money to the club runs it would be a help so I don’t have to float $2,480. Those that are doing the shirts by mail again that address is Yvonne Carpenter, 36 El Paso Blvd, Manitou Springs, CO 80829. This also brings up several questions that keep popping up:

1) “Will we be able to order shirts later.” YES:-) But we will have to do orders of 20 or something so the turn around may be slower. The plan this time is to have the shirts in about 2 or so weeks. After they come back from CRC they will go to Tri-Lakes for printing.

2) “I can’t find the shirt order page on the club page.” True! As you can understand I don’t think the CRC wants to supply the www with BOA shirts at cost + $1. We will probably sell just the T-shirt version to the general public down the road but right now we are just trying to get the club taken care of. Someone asked me about how donating blood effects running. Anyone got a good answer? I heard it makes you tired for a while but does anyone have any numbers? Of course saving a life is more important than running but at the same time how long does it effect you so that you can time it for upcoming races etc.? If I get any opinions on this I will post them next week.

Zeb and I are planning on biking across the United States this summer (NC to Oregon) and finishing on the west coast 2 weeks prior to the Pikes Peak marathon. Ok, that was one of the most enjoyable newsletters of all time. So, at the risk of pre-empting Dr. Rocket, I will offer some advice.

To prevent that shocking white milk appearance: add chocolate.

Hocking: The trick is in how you use your tongue. But, this might be one of those things best learned as a small boy, like signing your name with urine. (Hey, you dot the “i.")

For style points, follow the example of the 5th grade boys at Chipeta; drink the milk with a straw — through your nose.

To read about really gross people, try www.thespark.com and its gain 30 pounds in 30 days contest. (Hey Dr. Rocket, the girl was pretty and posed in her underwear in the name of science, and even let them post her fat pictures on line. Let’s see you top that.)

Speaking of email purges, the TCR’s email address has been changed to (e-mail address removed for www posting) after their ISP died. This .com death also effected a number of club runners too. Again part of the reason this nasty bit of business (the purge) has to happen once in a while.

Laila and I ran the Vancouver International Marathon on May 6th. We met at Sea-Tac Airport the evening of May 5th, picked up a rental car and drove to our reserved hotel room in Vancouver, arriving after midnight. The race was to start at 7 A.M. the next morning. Fortunately we had friends running the race who picked up our race packets and left them conveniently for us at our hotel. Not so pleasant was the “smoking” room we had been given. With no other rooms available we truly suffered that first night... Even the pillows reeked of smoke. Travelodge moves down in our ratings--we won’t be using them in the future...

Next morning the weather was “right.” Not too cold at all, so I went ahead and went singlet and shorts. A bit more cloud cover would have made it even better, but we couldn’t complain with 40-ish temps and minimal wind.

At race warm-up I connected with Uli Stiefl, a German citizen, grad student at the University of Washington, and winner of last year’s Vancouver marathon, as well as the Seattle, and Portland Marathon for the last two years. He has a 2:13 marathon PR. At the Seattle marathon in Nov 1999 (where I met Laila BTW) I ran with him for the first eight miles. We communicated in German. Chance for me to practice. :-) (He was “training” — when I told him he might as well go win it, he left me and “won”) Well, he remembered me right off when I approached him Sunday — “you’re from Colorado right?” He had some competition this time. When I saw him coming back to the finish at an out-and-back point on the course around kilometer 35 (42 Km in a marathon) he was 100 yards behind the front two runners. By race end he had reeled them in and finished on top in 2:18.

For me this was quite the “comfortable” marathon. After running now 40 marathons, a marathon doesn’t hold the same awe as it once did...It’s almost like just another race. I started off just running comfortably. 25 or more runners surged out ahead, while I just relaxed. After five miles I sighted the third place female — a runner from Japan about 200 yards ahead. Slowly I reeled her in. When I went by her I said “Gambatte” (succeed), She looking spent (not good so early in the race) replied “Hai” (yes). Next in my sights was the second place female — she had “Island Runners — the Underdog” on the back of her singlet. When I pulled up alongside I asked her “what island?” thinking Queen Charlotte or Vancouver? When she replied “Poland” I did a doubletake. Poland is not an island, but well, okay, whatever. Next was the mystery entry from Ethiopia. She had entered the race at the last minute, flying in from Addis Abababa 48 hours prior. She was running strong, but I caught her just before the longest hill of the course. Well, we know about hills, don’t we ICer’s, particularly at sea level!

With a smattering of men along with the top three women by mile 21 I had moved up from 18th to 11th place. Though by watch I noted that I was slowing, I still felt “just fine.” I went into the marathon finish “coast mode.” To mile 25 or so we had to climb up a bridge, then once at the high point of the bridge it was “all down hill.” I opened it up finishing strong in 2:43:29, 11th overall and 1st in the 45-49 age group.

Laila ran a comfortable 3:30 marathon.

Though we moved from the “smokey room,” we stayed one more night in Vancouver. Monday we took the ferry to Vancouver Island and stayed in Victoria. There we walked around town, explored Beacon Hill Park, the Parliament buildings, and ate Chinese food in the 2nd oldest Chinatown in North America. Tuesday we took the ferry to Port Angeles, WA on the Olympic Peninsula. Driving through Forks, WA (big logging town) we came to the Hoh River valley, where we entered the Olympic National Park. I had been here before, but enjoyed showing Laila some of the largest cedar/spruce/fir trees in the world. She wants to go back to climb Mt Olympus...a 3-day backpacking expedition. That night we stayed at Kalaloch Lodge on the Pacific Ocean. Wednesday morning we ran up the beach for 40 minutes before turning around, for a nearly hour and a half run.

My parents live in Olympia--in their many times remodeled home on Puget Sound. We stopped in for dinner Wednesday evening, before heading up to McChord AFB for the evenings lodging prior to our flight out this morning.

Great Trip! We needed more time though!

5/13/2001 Everybody and their mother was on the mountain for mother’s day today. As a result we blitzed the club attendance record by 6 people setting the new record at 65. There is once again no snow until Barr Camp where a stubborn patch remains. Snow is intermittently patchy to the Bottomless Pit sign and from there it is more frequent until the end of the long switchback where everyone has been going the wrong way. The remaining 14 switchbacks now have some tracks on them after some trail breaking. It was never deep however and once people start using the correct way it should wear down pretty fast. From the A-frame it looks like few, if any, have bothered with switch-backs.

5/10/2001 46 came for the evil repeats on the HWY 24 bypass. This is definitely the hardest of the 3 workouts but that does not stop the club from getting good turnouts for it. Skippies and high knees in the grass rounded out the workout. Four people (Brenda C, Matt C, Mike F and Yvonne C) have made all the workouts for the year thus becoming the first to earn the 2001 Incline Club award (www.skyrunner.com/story/incline_award.htm) by coming to 30 workouts.
