While most just voted yes or no there were some fun comments on counting
Craig Hs Tuesday out of state marathon as an R. Speaking of which there
were only two nos so the race counts!

Dear Power That (may) Be
If Craig is silly enough to run a marathon on a Tuesday, then sure let the cream puff have his R. ;)
Although,...had he not taken that side trip, he could have made it back for the Thursday run...one must question his loyalties....
Well done Craig! Good luck on your remaining races. :)

Upon noting the tear stains on the e-mail, I am compelled to vote yes for
the Tuesday out of state marathon earning an R.

Yes! By the way my sisters were there at the parade with their 12
kids
between them. I dont know if they were clued in to the fact that there
WAS a marathon going on or not they didnt mention it. At any rate,
Im sure they didnt cheer. I will let them know that they SHOULD have!

I vote emphatically yes that Craig H get an R for his report. Between
Brendas lost rock and my lost transmission, we dont need no more bad du du
on the mountain.
By the way, I really enjoyed Randy Ls marvelous Mt. Fuji report. What a great experience! It made me want to go out and eat a bowl of soba noodles after finishing this afternoons (Thursday) workout, but I had to settle for the usual pasta.

To Randy L,
Congrats on doing Fuji-San. I was in Japan last month and climbed from the fifth station. We did the Subashiri route. It was not at all crowded til a few hundred yards from the top, at which time we passed people gasping for breath. (Good ole Colorado altitude sure does pay off, doesnt it?
We climbed at night so as to arrive about five or ten minutes before the 4:25 sunrise, which was absolutely terrific. Its not called the Land of the Rising Sun for nothing. We then hiked around the entire rim of the crater and just socialized and enjoyed ourselves, until starting that super descent on the express trail.
I was happy to hear that someone else thought it was 21K of the 16 Golden Stairs. I just went from the fifth station and I thought it was that also. Think I didnt take it seriously enough, either, having heard of so many just regular people doing it. And mine wasnt a race so the pace was different from yours. I loved the experience though and wouldnt trade it for anything. Once again GOOD FOR YOU!!!

Just a couple of quickies:
A word of thanks to Rick H for hauling our stuff to the top of the Peak on Sunday. Hopefully, Rick made it back down with all auto body parts in tact.
Our condolences on the passing of one of our club members, Neal and Teresas long-time friend and wunderdog Zeb. He was their shadow, until recent months when he was unable to get around very well. He will be missed, but not forgotten. Long did he run...
Also, a word of congratulations to Neal and Teresa T on their new arrival. They are now the happy parents of a healthy new baby boy, 138 lbs 7 oz, 5 7, who was delivered to DIA after a slight weather delay. As a visiting German exchange student, David will reside with the Taylors over the next 8 or so months, and will attend Palmer High School as a Senior where he will run cross country. Welcome David!
Finally, in checking the volunteer hours, I think you might have missed the 30 minutes Laura and I each put in on the July 22 (the last time we did a round-trip from Elk Park).

Laila got a call this afternoon from a Minnesota couple at the Elk Creek
Campground near the intersection of Forest Road 250 and Colorado Highway 17
saying they had found Sam. At first Laila was skeptical, especially with the
recent sightings, and was unsure why they were calling him Samson and
not Sam. When she called me I immediately knew he had been found, because
Samson is his full name on his collar.
After the now familiar 4 hour drive we pulled up to the Elk Creek Trailhead where the Minnesota couple had by now secured him. I first saw Sam from a distance of 300 yards. He had already spotted my truck and was slowly wagging his tail. I drove right up to him jumped out of the truck and he was all over me. Very skinny after 35 days on his own--a veritable bag of bones. Ted from Minnesota had cut off his harness because it had deeply gouged into his flesh on his left front leg. He had lost the leash and the pack, but it appeared he had had a hard time in the wild. I fed him some well-deserved beef jerky before the four hour drive back to Colorado Springs. He is now happily snoozing in the back bedroom.
Thanks for your support!
We are all eagerly awaiting his trip report! (He has not yet uttered a sound though. Not even a low level howl)

Andy D reports:
I was using this race as my final preparation for the Ascent. The first mile
went great as I was in perfect position about 150 yards behind the leaders.
Then after a few sharp curves, the road suddenly forked. There were no
markings or course officials of any sort present and the road was so curvy
we could not see the leaders, who were just ahead of us. We then made our
best guess and took the left fork. This detour cost a large group of us
about 20 minutes. When we arrived at the first water station we were in
397th place out of 400 runners. A quick glance up the trail revealed an
unending mass of walkers/joggers blocking the trail. Passing these
cumulatively and individually large masses proved to be anything but easy.
On more than one occasion, I was forced to physically knock people out of
the way when they refused to yield to the faster runner. The race became an
exaggerated fartlek workout. Despite these factors, I ended up in 20th
place. If one simply cuts the 20 minutes off my time and does not account
for the added time of passing the hordes of people, I would have been 4th
overall.

8/5/2001 63 ICers were all over Pikes Peak again today. Quite a few more
starting from the top but still the majority came in from Elk Park. A few
diehards are still going from the bottom as well. Some nasty storm clouds
both to the East and the West had the trail work crew doing garbage near the
top so we could get out of there fast. About 25 minutes after we left I was
told the thunder and lightning was booming and flashing (at the same time)
and the Summit House even asked its visitors to stay inside! Of course we
were long gone by then:-)
8/2/2001 A little rain did not keep 43 of us from do the evil Hwy 24 bypass road for 40 minutes. In fact it kind of cooled things off for a welcome change. Skippies and kneelifts in the park finished the day. Only one more hard Thursday to go:-)
