LEADVILLE STUFF:

Name: Keith Grimes
Goal: Finish Leadville 100 in under 25 hours.
Result: Finished in 22:08:05 (beat last years time by 5 hours, 16 minutes.)

General Summary: I had waited 5 years for this day to happen. In my first 2 attempts at Leadville, I DNF’d. The 3rd year, I did not start due to a severe ankle sprain. Last year, I finished, but I had quad problems and other problems (the runs). I finished last year, but I was not pleased with my performance and my finishing time. In a race of this distance, anything can happen and usually something does go wrong. This year, I had my quad problems AGAIN, but it was not as severe and I was able to continue at a reasonable pace. Other than my quads, the weather was perfect, my stomach was fine, no other bodily problems and I had a great crew (my wife Cereta) and 3 pacers from the Incline Club: Eric G, John G, and Brett P. Without their help, I may not have broke 25 hours. Their support and enthusiasm was a huge inspiration to me. I would like to thank everyone who cheered me on, and especially to Theresa T., who I could hear 1/4 mile away as I came into the aid stations. There were even a few people who recognized the Incline Club shirt I raced in.

Things Done Right: I had awesome training leading up to the race. I think I peaked at the right time. I was setting some all-time PR’s on Barr Trail and Elk Park runs just a few weeks before the race. I tapered to where I felt rested, but never felt like I lost conditioning. Actually, I rode my bike between 150 — 180 miles the week leading up to the race. I went into the race knowing what to expect and what I was capable of doing. I stayed within my comfort zone the entire race. I did not have the physical peaks and valleys I have had before.

Things Done Wrong: If I could do it over again, I would go out even faster and push to break 22 hours at the end.

Comments on Calculator if Used: Matt, you need to run Leadville so you can have a calculator for this race as well!

Any Other Stuff: I had no strategy going into this race until I was in bed the night before trying to sleep. We had been told there were 500 runners registered. So I figured about 400 starters. After about 4 miles into the race, you turn onto a single track to run around Turquoise Lake. I did not want to get stuck in a long pace-line where I could not pass as I did the year before. So, I decided just hours before the race, I would go out fast, get in the upper 1/4 of the starters and then see how I felt. Once I started out fast, it felt comfortable and I just continued on. As for the rest of this year, I have to keep my weight down and not win the FILA T-shirt for most weight gained (fat) in a short period of time. I will definitely go back next year and do this race again, hopefully 15 pounds lighter than this year.
