HIce ICers,
If you havent made your screw shoes now is as good as time as any because this week we are back on the Barr Trail. www.skyrunner.com/screwshoe.htm. It could get ugly but we need to spend some time on the mountain. Speaking of THE mountain, check out this site: www.pikespeakobservatory.org. It has a link to 8 live cameras on the summit of Pike Peak! They are pretty cool to look at in the dark because you can see the city lights.

Run up the Barr Trail to the 1/2 mile sign. Turn left and run out to Mountain View on the COG. Return via Barr Camp or head straight back down. 2.5-3.5 hours. If it would take longer turn around earlier.

Just wanted to pass this on so you can mention the happenings in your weekly newsletter (if you werent already planning to). I wondered if any ICers you know of were helping run the torch, if so we should try to meet in a spot or run alongside. Just an idea.
(MC adds: www.gazette.com has the maps that Marilyn sent me. If you missed the Torch Relay today a couple of us are going to go to Soda Springs Park tomorrow for the Manitou Springs portion. It should hit the park about 9:20ish. Also I may be wrong but Mike Lloyd is the only ICer who carried a torch and he did it out in Omaha.)

I am going through a divorce and looking for a small place to rent in the Manitou Springs area. It will be at least 8 months before my finances are in order so I am looking for a deal. It will need to be a place that my two daughters (ages 12 AND 10) can visit and spend overnights. If you know of a place, please contact me at: (e-mail address removed for www posting) or 391-3477 Thank you!

Hi. Are any of you folks interested in hosting an out-of-towner for the Pikes Peak marathon? (I am a 52 years young (married) runner and would return the favor for someone interested in coming to northern California for the Dipsea, Quadruple Dipsea, Miwok 100k or Golden Gate Headlands 50k!). Please let me know. I would appreciate it.
Sincerely, Peter Holleran (e-mail address removed for www posting)

Sounds like youre all having some great runs...I continue to be inspired by many of you and members of my own Hawaiian Ultra Running Team (HURT)...last weekend, I ran the 100 mile HURT II in 35 hours, 29 minutes(under the 36 hour cutoff). I was one of only 12 out of 59 runners to complete the 100 mile course. I had never before run more than 40 miles!! It was the most awesome, freaky, bizarre, fun experience of my life! Rain, wind, darkness...what a great adventure running is!! I will be trying to move to the Colorado Springs area next summer(2003) or nearby, so I might be able to join your group then. In the meantime, I am lovin Hawaii and encourage everyone to keep running and believe they can reach their goals, because I am living proof that though you may not have the most perfect training, have a great attitude and belief that running is fun and you can succeed at any endeavor you choose. Aloha...

You should let Gordon Barnett know a little tid-bit on Boston qualifying times... I found this out when I qualified. Gordon needed 3:25 and had a 3:25:30 chip time. However, Boston has let you in as long as you had a 3:25:xx, so Im betting Gordon has a ticket if he applies!

Tamara Rogers writes:
Just to clarify about qualifying for Boston Gordon doesnt need a 3:25:00 he needs a 3:25:59. Boston shows their qualifying times with no seconds e.g. 3:25. They actually give you every second in that minute range from 00 to 59. So with a 3:25:30, hes qualified. I know from experience. I ran my first marathon in 3:40:19 and thought I had missed qualifying by 19 secs. I called up the officials; and sure enough, I had actually qualified by 41 seconds.

Rick mentions there are carnies to mark the trail... I dont remember seeing any carnival people out along the trail pointing us in the correct direction. I think Rick gets a little delirious on these long runs...

ICU (Incline Club Ultra) REPORT:

Keith Grimes reports:
We had 5 people show up for our 7:00am long run. We ran over to RR rd. then onward and up to the overlook. Eric Gabe who is running the Las Vegas Marathon in one week turned off early and went back via Williams Canyon trail. The remaining 4 of us trudged our way up to the overlook, almost 6 miles past the Williams Canyon trail turnoff. Once at the overlook, we headed down towards Waldo Canyon. This week, Paul Sullivan wanted to do some exploring, so we took a trail off towards Cascade and eventually came out near the Monastery. It ended up being a nice trail thru a wooded shady area, which would be nice to run in the summer. We then crossed Hwy 24 and got back on the UPT. We followed this until we came out at the Longs Ranch rd turn. Myself and Paul, headed back UPT. Rick Hessek and David Peak went on up Longs and on around to Barr Trail. The route Paul and I took, ended up being about 21 miles with 4200 ft. elevation gain. Rick and Davids route ended up being over 24 miles with over 6000 ft. elevation
gain. We plan on starting early again next week with a 7:00 start time.

Please add me to the Incline Club e-mail list. Ive been thinking about joining in on the workouts for several years, and maybe regular e-mails will motivate me to join you guys for a few workouts. Last year I finished the Marathon in 4:48 (15th) with only one run up to Barr Camp. Who knows what I could do if I actually put in some serious hill work?

I live in Littleton and have registered for the triple crown. I did my first marathon last year (Boulder Backroads) and I walked the Breast Cancer 3-day, so distance is certainly not an issue for me. Id like to get in some quality training before the PP Marathon and the Incline Club sounds like the way to go. However, Im not a runner, Im a racewalker. Is that a problem apart from the obvious fact that Im not as fast as you guys? I doubt I could make it every Sunday but Id sure like to try a few sessions with the club. Do you have other walkers in the group?
(MC adds: Joanne, I think we only have one person who calls themselves a walker but he is one fast walker. Last year he walked both the ascent and the marathon with times of 3:38 and 6:55. His ascent time was good enough to place him 298 out of 1,718 or in the top 20%! Now we do have plenty of runners who have to do lots of walking! That may be where you fit in. I would say try it and see!)

Im getting a bit jealous reading all the info on what this weeks route is going to be... Im in England for school, and there isnt much in the way of mountains here, so my training will be done on rolling green hills and countryside, with occasional runs in Wales and Scotland for some altitude training. I suppose the difficulty isnt much, but the scenery sure makes up for it! Ill be back in June to train on Pikes Peak when theres no ice left. I like running a lot more when it doesnt involve sliding down Barr Trail on my butt!
MIE #2 writes:
Oh, I wanted to be there, got so sick. See you next week.

Sorry, no record! I just moved into a new place on Saturday and got swept up with unpacking, boxes, etc. Thanks for keeping tabs on me!

ICers running well:
Congrats to Bev Zimmermann and Eric Billmeyer for winning the overall in Winter Series II. If someone sends in the results for the ICers I will post them here. Otherwise just head over to www.pprrun.org to see who did what to whom!
Congrats to Andy Dimmen for doing so well in his first snowshoe race. He placed 12th at the North American Snowshoe Championships beating a lot of well known runners including several members of the US mountain running team that flew all the way out from the East Coast. bcsnowshoe.com/index.cfm?do=news&pos=2&id=23 Kelli Lusk placed 15th in the same race.
Congrats to Joe Cowell who has gone over 2 years now without missing a day of running!

WWW POST:

1/27/02 We tied the club record today when 78 runners came out for the Waldo run. This also means that we had 75 or more on every run in January! Most importantly however was the number of those runners who returned from their runs saying they took off big chunks of time compared to three weeks ago on this loop. The weather was awesome but there are some bad icy spots on the Barr Trail. Once again it is best to use the detour at No Name Creek because that area is an ice rink. Also be careful right near the bottom on the final switchback! The ICU (Incline Club Ultra) runners did a really long crazy loop off of Rampart Range Road and came back with us on the UPT.
