Hi there ICers,
I want to thank Jack Ramsey for approaching the Manitou Springs city administrator and talking him into letting us open the restrooms before their normal 9am opening time. Starting this Sunday we will have access to the bathrooms in Soda Springs Park at around 7:45am. That is a nice gesture from the city. However I think Jack was pretty convincing with one of his selling points being you can save having 75 runners going to bathroom in the bushes.
Speaking of being nice to the city... PLEASE remember to try to stay on the sidewalk if possible going up Ruxton. Further when we are on roads that dont have a sidewalk please try to stay to the left in single file facing traffic. Last Sunday we had runners on both sides of the street and you could see the stress buildup in the eyes of the drivers that had to split us down the middle. Remember the roads are not closed off for us we can do our own thing soon as we hit the trails:-)
Congratulations to Fred and Sarah Wright. Yesterday, Wednesday the 6th, at 5:22pm Wesley Hatch Wright made his appearance at 3lbs 15ozs, 17 long with a 12 round head. One minute later at 5:23pm Adabelle Clair Wright made her appearance at 4lbs 11ozs, 16 3/4 long with a 13 1/2 round head. A lot of bed rest was required by Sarah leading up to this and it was not easy for her but we look forward to seeing her out there again one of these Sundays:-) If you want send your congrats send them to Fred at: (e-mail address removed for www posting).

Thanks to all the ICers who were concerned about my finishing time, and whether I qualified for Boston or not. As Dave Reily, and Tamara Rogers correctly pointed out, my 3:25:30 was indeed good enough to get me into the 106th running of the Boston Marathon. as a matter of fact I received my entrant confirmation earlier this week. A big thank you to my pal Fred Wright, as Im rather late in the process for this years BAA Marathon, most or all of the reasonable accommodations are already full. But thanks to Fred (and wife Sarah) well be bunking with Freds in-laws (Sarahs parents). BTW Freds mother-in-law Andrea has a string of Boston Marathons going, a record I believe at 25... and counting! What a fantastic running family we all have.

Periodically, please remember to remind people who live up in this area, like Ms. Able, about the Denver Trail Runners. There are several walkers and some very slow runners who regularly join us on Thursday nights. There also is a large group of people training for Pikes who join us. The Thursday night runs are continuing in the dark over the winter. There is also a regular Wednesday morning run now. Most of the weekend stuff now revolves around snowshoeing, although several of us try to join the Saturday Evergreen Runners Circle group. Things will start to really take off again in April, when we go to Daylight Savings Time. That might include an occasional group sojourn to your Sunday runs.
They can get more info on the group at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DenverTrailRunners

Just a quick note to say that the club runs are paying off in a big way already. I have seen large gains in fitness in just a short couple of months. It really does make a difference when you actually put some time in on the trails!

Also let her know that I am doing a 40 mile walk this Saturday as part of the training for the CafeToCafe 100 in April.

ICU (Incline Club Ultra) REPORT:

Keith Grimes reports:
This past Sunday, 3 of us started early. Our goal was a nice easy long run, but not too long. We took Ute, Longs, Bobs Rd., Barr to Mount View trail. We then headed down and turned off to include the water pipe trail. We then came out at No-Name creek and finished by coming back Barr trail. This run still ended up being 17.5 miles with around 5000ft. of elevation gain.
This Sunday we will most likely start out on Rampart Range and possibly go to the overlook, then come back thru Waldo, then Ute. If we are feeling very energetic, may go up Longs, Bobs, to Barr Camp then take Barr all the way down. We found the Mountain View trail to be very un-runnable with all the snow.

Have you ever heard of anyone getting attacked by a bear or mountain lion on the Barr trail. I plan on running this trail all year round. I just wanted to know if I should start arming myself when I run. Thanks for your help.
(MC adds: The Incline Club has been running the Barr Trail year round for 6 years. While I have heard of at least 2 mountain lion sightings and about a dozen bear sightings no one has ever been attacked. Frankly I would be more scared of people who are running on the trail armed!)

2/3/02 Another 74 runners headed up the Barr Trail today. There was enough newer snow on the ground that it was not too icy. A major water flow across the Barr Trail where usually it is just a trickle sparked the interest of some. A little investigation found that the water department is behind it. Many made it all the way to Barr Camp and what is amazing is that again several reported that their splits were better than what they posted during the races! Just imagine when the snow melts! Nice weather after the run kept a good sized group in the park telling war stories.
