Hi there ICers,

Sorry for putting this out the day of the Thursday workout however Yvonne and I have been working on the club shirts. We are happy to announce that we are ready to take orders:-)

http://www.inclineclub.com/shirt

The deadline for this order is May 5th. For those that got shirts last year the new shirts have the updated club website. We have also come up with a couple of new shirt styles including some with the club logo embroidered! Also the material that the shirts are made of is a new one that is supposed to keep us dryer and most importantly not stink so bad after a run!!!

Speaking of Thursday runs, that was quite the way to start them off with a club Thursday record of 63:-)

Finally, note the Sunday run is no longer the UPT/Waldo/LRR loop. With snow and ice no longer an issue on the Barr Trail we need to take advantage of it!

NEXT RUNS:
###############################################
Thursday, April 18, 5:30pm — Soda Springs Park
Warm-up to Hydro Street. Tempo run up the Barr Trail for 30 minutes or to No Name Creek whichever comes first. Run easy back down to Hydro Street and do 4 Hydro Street hill repeats!

Sunday, April 21, 8:00am — Soda Springs Park
Run up the Barr Trail to the Bottomless Pit turn-off and back. 2.5-3.5 hours. If it would take longer turn back earlier trying to get to at least Barr Camp.

We would like to put out a special recognition to one of the ICr’s for most improved. This ICr comes out on a regular basis and stays to herself but attempts to do what she is capable of doing. Early in the season she would do an out and back and since we generally start at the back of the pack, would often run by her upon her return. As of late she has been able to do more of the prescribed route and recently did Waldo canyon for the first time on our Sunday run. We had a late start yesterday up RRR and caught up to her and told her we were quite impressed by her improvement. She finished her run through Williams Canyon with us and she had a solid run to the end. We would like to recognize JACKIE BURHANS for her efforts. Way to go Jackie :>)

Boy, it sure was great to get out with the IC group again. Laura and I are taking some down time this year for some long-needed rest, relaxation, repair and respiration, and so haven’t been to any workouts this year until this past weekend’s “Van Feed.” We had heard a rumor that the IC had gotten soft, and was now just a social club, and so figured we could slip right in and no one would notice us. Not so fast Rocket Butt. Well, now my quads are sore from our little run down Barr Trail, so now I think we’ll need to take a few more months off. It looks like lot’s of folks are training pretty hard, par. for IC members, so not much has changed in that respect. It was great to see a lot of old familiar faces, and to meet and talk to some new ones. But it wasn’t just the good, free food that brought Laura and I out. And as fun as it was to see everyone, it wasn’t just the social opportunity. And no, it wasn’t the feeling of working hard (the run up Barr felt good, but not too good). No, the spectacle that brought us out is that we just had to see Fred Wright’s hickey. Man did you see that thing? Right there, big and black and blue as can be, on his skinny white “cheek.” Awe, come on Fred! You didn’t think we would really buy that story about flying through the air, clinging from bushes, bouncing off of rocks...

Again, a BIG thanks to Teresa and Neal Taylor, Jeannie Mills, and “das Boy” (David Steffes) for the wonderful pancakes and other treats, and for taking the initiative to organize a fun time. See you again, same time and date, next year. We should be fully recovered by then.

This has been rated a 1-star report by the AAA (American Asterisk Association).

Here is a suggestion for your web team to consider. Could we put a section under “MAPS” which includes “downloadable” gps traces of the trails we run. I use the TOPO! software, and I know several club members have made GPS routes which are compatible this software package.

(Matt C adds: That is another good idea to go with Randy’s last week. I have all the club runs in this format and just may post them one of these days. Right now I still need to get caught up on all the wheel measurements I took for the Barr Trail up to Barr Camp, LRR, the J pipe and Bob’s road.)

I have sent a few emails regarding the 3C5K (thanks for the plug) and joined the email list (club?) in the last couple months. First of all, I do have my race next Saturday morning ( 04-20-02 for fun of course) and I have Lincoln, Nebraska Marathon the first weekend in May. Can I run with you all on Sunday the 14th for my last long run before Lincoln? I am up in Divide but the company and scenery would probably be good on the Sunday 3-5 hour run. What do you think? Thanks in advance and that physical fitness test mentioned this last letter is one you have to get ready for, especially priming yourself for the max number of pushups\situps in two minutes. The run in lower twelves normally satisfies me, anyway. Pushups and situps have to be up in the sixties and always hoping for seventies — hasn’t happened yet, but it will. Hey, RUN_ON.

(Matt C adds: I would make my long runs be more like my race. Running crazy mountain runs is great for crazy mountain races but it is not the best thing for crazy flatland marathons in Nebraska. Next, I think 3-5 hours is WAY too much just 2 weeks before the race!)

(Once in a while this type of thing gets sent to me. The “rule” I have always used to keep this from turning into a spamfest is as long as the person runs with the club just about anything goes.)

Hey Matt, I know in the past you have posted things for sale, and I have an Original Baby Jogger, which my wife and I bought in May of 2000. We are looking to purchase a twinner. If you could put it on the web posting this would be greatly appreciated. It is a Baby Jogger with 20 inch wheel and the color is grape (purple). The price is $150.00 obo. Contact Matt and he will get you in contact with me.

(Matt C adds: There are currently 6 IC babies due in a 3 month span which means some people must have had a heck of an off season after the PPA/M last year. Spouses listed if they run with the club:
Eric Gabe — 5/28 girl Brianna 2nd
Paul Sullivan — 6/2/02 ? ? 4th
Matt & Yvonne Carpenter — 7/20/02 girl Kyla 1st
John & Marilyn Goodloe — 7/27/02 girl ? 1st
JD VanLancker — 8/2/02 ? ? 2nd
Robin & Andy Kovats — 8/19/02 boy Julius 1st)

I am enjoying the club runs and want to let my fellow club members know that I am a sports/neuromuscular massage therapist. I am willing to give club members a discount on massage. I normally charge $50 per hour and I will give all club members the rate of $35 per hour and $20 per half hour. They can call me, Sarah, @ 291-1723 to set up an appointment. I know it can enhance their training.

R REPORTS:
###############################################
Tony “the weather forecaster” Eckel reports:
OK, so I did not reach my goal of breaking 3 hours at Boston, but I actually walked away with a bigger accomplishment. I got a PR (personal record) of 3:09:50 in warm muggy conditions which my body just hates.

It was in the mid to upper 50’s and fogged in at the starting line. That temperature may sound cool but is too warm for me to run my fastest. I do best at about 40F. The high humidity also makes it so your sweat does not work effectively at cooling you down. After struggling with the dense mass of runners in the first mile, I got on pace running 6:40 per mile. By mile 6 I could tell I was beginning to over heat. Also the fog was thinning and you could begin to feel the sun. But I was not ready to give in so I stayed on pace. I had a T in a circle on my shirt which obviously stood for Tony but it is also the symbol of the Boston subway. For 26.2 miles, I got nearly continuous cheers like: “Go T!,” “Don’t hop on the subway!,” “Looking good T-man!,” “Stay on schedule T!".

I stayed on pace through mile 11 but in mile 12, my body gave a red alert and gave me 2 options: drop out or adjust your goal. Since it was BOSTON, I chose option 2 which proved to be quite an effort. I was delirious for most of the 2nd half of the race. After clearing the infamous heartbreak hill at mile 21, the temperature dropped back down from the sea breeze. This was too little too late but at least it woke me up and let me run a bit harder. Somewhere around mile 23, I realized that I could actually pull off a PR so I went for it! My family was spread out over these miles and it really spurred me on to see them cheering. I can not describe in words how intense the last couple miles were. After I crossed the finish line, I kissed the first volunteer (an unknown elderly lady) who handed me water.

So to me this run was like the Apollo 13 mission, a successful failure. I did not get the moon but I got something much bigger. I was able to stare down a potentially disastrous situation and pull off a peak performance. Thanks to everybody for all your well-wishes and support.

4/14/02 Sun: 70 made it for a beautiful day! Although today’s run was the Rampart Williams loop some could not resist the Barr Trail. There is now no snow all the way to Barr Camp — a whole month ahead of the last several years! For that matter ICer Craig Burbank has summited 8 times with his shovel and has cleared the trail the WHOLE way with just a few patches of snow remaining. Those of us doing the Rampart/Williams loop also enjoyed perfect running conditions. This was the last of the Rampart runs for this year since ice is no longer a factor on the Barr Trail:-)

4/11/02 Thur: 63 runners came out for the first Thursday workout of the 2002 season smashing the previous Thursday record of 57. The protocol was 30 minutes of 1 minute hard, 1 minute easy up the Barr Trail. Several said that they were quickly reminded after 15 minutes why pacing is so important on this workout. Done incorrectly there ends up being little difference speed wise between the hard minute and easy minute. This early in the year it would be better to walk the easy minute to insure a good quality hard minute!
