Hi ICers,

That will teach me to predict the weather! In the news post for the 5th I had predicted that the Barr Trail would be snow free by the 19th. At least I qualified the prediction with “unless we get some more.” Was that some storm or what? Amazing how fast it is melting however!

Yvonne has an official print day for the club T-shirts — May 23rd. Won’t be long now:-)

We blitzed another club attendance record last Thursday — as always, thanks for coming out!

NEXT RUNS:
###############################################
Thursday, May 16, 5:30pm — Soda Springs Park
Warm-up to Hydro Street. Tempo run up the Barr Trail for 30 minutes or to No Name Creek whichever comes first. Run easy back down to Hydro Street and do 4 Hydro Street hill repeats!

Sunday, May 19, 8:00am — Soda Springs Park
Run up the Barr Trail to the Bottomless Pit turn-off and back. 2.5-3.5 hours. If it would take longer turn back earlier trying to get to at least Barr Camp.

I was on a business trip to Salt Lake City last week (missed the 2 May workout)--found a great place to run, it’s called Wire Mountain. From downtown, just take 800 South to the east. It turns into Foothill Blvd. Just past the zoo is a trail head on the left. Basically, look up! There is a mountain top with what appears to be 2 bill boards--they are actually towers with huge reflectors. Go up the trail about 10min, turn left on the gravel road, then after about 100yd, turn right & up & up & up. The trail is quite a bit steeper than Barr. It took me 50min to reach the top. Then, rather than an out/back, continue north past the lookout tower (you can climb up this 20’ tower & enjoy the view) for about 5min...with a bit of hunting around, you will find the trail back down the scrub oak “gully” and pop out a mile north of the trail head. It’s an easy run back. Absolutely spectacular views of SLC and you get a couple thousand feet of climbing.

Eryn is running the Leeds (England!) marathon tomorrow. I told her to hustle in a race report to get her “r”.

Re: IC 2002 baby #4
So, now you know why Laura and I haven’t been attending too many IC runs this year. It’s definitely contagious!

So exciting to hear about all the new little runners. One small note to keep in mind while your waiting for Yvonne to go into labor, a baby is considered full term at 37 weeks. The magical 40 week is an average. So those babies arriving ‘3 weeks’ early really aren’t.

(Matt C adds: Agreed and with the “early” arrival of baby Sullivan Yvonne and I went out and bought a car seat! Bring it on:-)

I just wanted to share a unique story! My daughter Tiffani Willis was selected as Manitou Springs High School Homecoming Queen, pretty cool huh!! Anyway, she was then selected as Americas Homecoming Queen State Finalist, WOW!!!

Of course this event was held on May 4 and 5 in Aurora, Colorado. The pageant walk and judging did not begin until 3:00 p.m. on the 5th! Low and behold I had the front desk wake me up at 4:30 a.m. I put on my running duds, and made my journey to Manitou Springs, for the 8:00 a.m. run! I felt like I cheated because I only ran to Barr camp, then back down, and immediately made my return back to Aurora in plenty of time to watch Tiffani get chosen into the top ten!!! YAH BABY, YAH!!! She did not win but in my eyes she already did just to be selected to compete!!! Needless to say, I was very POOPED at the end of that long day, but I still had that funny smirk of a grin on my face all the way home, because I still got my Sunday star!!!!!

Eryn Lonnquist reports:
Race = Leeds Marathon
Location = Leeds, England
Date = 05.12.02
Distance = 26.2 miles
Goal = 5:00:00
Results = 5:00:05
General =
When they tell you to ‘go out slow,’ boy do I take that to heart. I tried Jeff Galloway’s technique of run 5 minutes, walk 1 since this was my first marathon. Worked pretty well until I realized it was making me way to slow. Slow enough so that when I got to the second loop of the race, I was in last place with a 13 mile time of 2:40. Ouch, I know I can do better than that.... picked up the pace for the next 13 miles, so that my second lap was only 2:20. Unfortunately since they reduced the number of race marshals present at about three hours, I got lost about mile 21. Eventually found my way back, but I might have lost a half mile in my wanderings, oh well. So I don’t know how accurate my time is for a full 26.2 miles, but I’m sure it’s within 5 minutes, that was my pace towards the last 10 miles. On the brighter side, since I was in last place from about 6/7 miles on, no one passed me at all the last 20ish miles of the race. I finally did pass someone at mile 16 and started catching people from then on.

Right =
Brought granola bars with- no food was available on the course. Drank water the two days before like there would be no tomorrow. Since I was so conservative the first half, I had a ton of energy the second half- never hit any wall, so I probably should’ve gone faster. Checked out the start/finish area the night before so I knew what to expect. During the race drank a glass of water and a glass of their lemonade-energy drink at every station, that seemed to work okay in my stomach.

Wrong =
I have no idea why I was so slow the first half of the race. I’ll really have to start adding to my speedwork in order to prevent that from happening again. But now that I’ve done a marathon, I have a little more of an idea about what to expect and how to pace myself. I also didn’t put enough sunscreen on... the word ‘lobster’ comes to mind. Will have to bring that with in the future to re-apply half way through, the pain isn’t worth the couple of seconds lost by stopping to put it on. Getting lost at the end wasn’t helpful to my frame of mind- next time I’ll pay more attention to the course on the first loop to hopefully prevent that from happening again, regardless of race marshals. Wrote my splits on my arm, which has worked in the past but this time disappeared after some sunscreen and sweat. I’ll bring a piece of paper next time, or write them on my number. I also wore my thinnest running socks... bad idea. After five hours in them, it wasn’t fun. I should’ve gone with thick thorlos, especially since the course was all on pavement.

Other Stuff =
No food was out at any aid station or at the end! That was certainly a bummer. Course was moderately hilly — tame compared to CO standards, but decent compared to England standards. They had a lane blocked off for the runners where a sidewalk wasn’t available, that was nice. All of the volunteers were quite helpful, and the kids giving out water kept asking if you wanted it thrown at you! A good sized race, 4500 people total, but hardly any of them were doing the marathon, most were doing the half-marathon or relay, so the course was pretty bare the second lap (especially since I was last for a while...hmmmmmm).

Race = Law Day 15k

I’ve been preparing to run the San Diego marathon on June 2nd so I was using this race as tune up. The main things I was trying to get down was proper pacing and running my own race.

The race was held along the beachfront of Santa Barbara. Couldn’t have been a more beautiful place to run, however, the course wasn’t so great. It started on a narrow sidewalk where after about a mile it switched to the road for a mile or so then it turned around came back up the road then it went back to the sidewalk then to the bike path then through a parking lot then to a sidewalk then road again and then... nevermind. It was slightly confusing to say the least. Would have been much better if it stayed on the road the whole time.

The race itself went very well for me. Actually, it was probably the best race I’ve had since I started running. The course was mainly flat with one long uphill section towards the middle of the course. I had planned on running slightly faster than my goal pace on the flatter sections and the downhills to make up for the slow mile or so uphill. Well this plan actually worked for me. I went through the first three miles right about 5:50 per mile pace and even though I got passed by a few people I stuck to my plan. I ran mile 4 (start of hill) at 6:00 and then mile 5 (hill) at 6:20. Then once through the turn around and on the downhill I was back down to the 5:50’s. I held this pace to the finish to finish with a time of 55:57. I felt strong and comfortable the whole way and this time I was the one passing people in the final miles rather then my usual go out to fast and die. I guess I’m learning. My time was good enough for 13th overall and 2nd in my age group.

Right =
-Did a good warmup. Something I hadn’t done before previous races. -Checked the course before hand and came up with a pacing plan. -Stuck to my plan and ran my own race. Previous races I would just try to stay with faster runners until I blew up and then I would try to hang on to the finish. Not a good thing to do.

Wrong =
Can’t think of anything.

Race = Lory State Park Trail Race
Location = Ft. Collins
Date = Sat May 11th
Distance = 10 miles
Results = 3rd overall

General =
This years race was run under ideal conditions as the clouds and rain had yet to make an appearance. The course was changed slightly this year making it a little faster than in years past. The first half+ is over tough terrain with good steep climbs and some hairy technical descents. The last 4 miles are pretty fast with a long gradual downhill, rolling terrain, and then an uphill finish.

Right =
Stayed with leaders in beginning of race then stayed in race. Felt like c**p at about 30 min in and the top two started pulling away. Almost pulled out but that’s no longer an option this year. Made it to the top of the next hill still in third but fourth place was right behind. Decided to let loose and go for it. The rest of the race felt great. Put almost 30 seconds on 4th and gained about the same on second. I finished over 6 minutes faster than last year and was really glad I had toughed it out.

Wrong =
Probably should have brought some GU with me, might have helped me from crashing in the middle of the race.

Other Stuff =
Great early season trail race with good organization and swag at the end. More Ic’ers should come up. Along with Terri (who finished her first big trail race!) and I Andy K? showed up from the club.

5/12/02 Sun: Mothers day traditionally brings out our largest groups. Today however an all night rainfest may have scared off a few as “only” 67 came out for what turned into a real snowfest. On the way up the snow line was at the top of the Ws. By Barr Camp we had 4 inches of white stuff and tracks were being covered quickly. However several of us had summit on the brain and headed off into the storm. By the A-frame the snow was 6" deep and one turned back. As we progressed on to the 2 mile sign it became hard to judge depth because everything was a fluffy white and we would easily trip on snow covered rocks. At this point we would learn that yet another turned back. The top 2 miles were under about 8" of new snow but they passed in a blur as our focus on finding the trail intensified. Finally we could smell the diesel of the COG and knew we would live another day:-) The trip down was one of thought as we let soak in how awesome it is to have such a formidable opponent as Pikes Peak in our backyard. Only last week the trip was a breeze in shorts and short sleeves. A lesson in mountain life for sure!

5/9/02 Thur: 67 came out today thus smashing the Club Thursday attendance record:-) The Alvares and Wright families contributed to 8 of the group including the twins in their twin babyjogger. 1 minute hard, 1 minute easy for 30 minutes was the protocol today and some are getting this workout down and flying on the hard minutes. Hydro Street is seeing some fast feet as well!
