Well now ICers,

If you look at your watches you will see we have a training run in about an hour! Sorry for the delay but I am happy to report that Yvonne and I just got back from the printer with the club shirts and they look great! We will start distribution by mail over the next couple of days and start bringing them to club runs starting Sunday. We would make a mess of it if we tried to bring them today.

###############################################
NEXT RUNS:
###############################################
Thursday, May 23, 5:30pm (see above) — Soda Springs Park
Warm-up to Hydro Street. 30 minutes of 1 minute hard, 1 minute easy, up the Barr Trail. Run easy back down to Hydro Street and do 4 Hydro Street hill repeats!

Sunday, May 26, 8:00am — Soda Springs Park
Run up the Barr Trail to the Bottomless Pit turn-off and back. 2.5-3.5 hours. If it would take longer turn back earlier trying to get to at least Barr Camp.

The answer to your question “why do we run in the rain?” is to get to know what a piece of bread feels like when it gets soaked or to know what it is like to run in Oregon in the wet season.

We’re hosting a potluck dinner for the Incline Club at our home after the Garden of the Gods 10 Mile Run on June 9th. Check the Incline Club message board for specifics.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooo. It ain’t true!!! Really!!! I guess I should work on my phraseology. All I meant to say was, well, I don’t remember what I meant to say now. But it definitely wasn’t that! I hope that clears it up, but thanks for the congratulations anyway. Well, gotta go feed the kids, uh, I mean cats.

(Matt C adds: Tom had to write this to several people after they confused what he wrote last week as a coded message saying that Laura was pregnant.)

For the club, can you put in a note that I am looking for a ride up to the TL20K. Of course, I’ll chip in gas money, etc. Maybe somebody is going up Friday night and would split a hotel room. I have reservations to camp at Molly Brown, but now there is a total ban on campfires, etc., and my group doesn’t want to go. (I’m the only runner in the group.) Either that, or I’ll drive and maybe somebody else needs a ride and would split a room. Or, we could leave at “0:dark:30,” the race starts at 9AM. I’ll put a message on the message board, also.

Thanks for updating us on ICer’s and their weddings, families. In the “it’s a small world” department, on the way back from a conference at Hickam AFB, Hawaii I came on ICer Robin Fontenot at Inchoen as he arrives for a one-year stint at Kunsan AB, ROK. Robin is an Air Force dentist. He has a follow-on in one year right back to the Academy.

Laila joined me for the ten days in Hawaii. After the conference we enjoyed four extra days on Molokai.

R REPORTS:
###############################################
Daiva Cooper reports:
Race = Fort Collins Old Town Half-Marathon
Location = Fort Collins, Colorado
Date = Sunday, May 19th
Distance = 13.1 miles
Goal = 2:11
Results = 2:08

General =
The course started in the Poudre Canyon for the first 3 miles then proceeded down a back highway eventually ending in downtown Fort Collins. The canyon part of the run was beautiful. However, the scenery diminished greatly once we left the canyon. The course was basically flat with a few minor hills along the way.

Right =
1. Stayed well-hydrated and had enough energy during the race
2. Only walked one time, to eat a power gel and take off my long sleeve shirt
3. Beat my goal time by 3 minutes

Wrong =
1. Needed a better night’s sleep; would have been better off leaving Springs at 3 am then sleeping on a friend’s couch the night before
2. Need to train for road races on the road and trail races on the trail. I have been doing mainly trail runs, so the road really gave my knees and hips a beating.

Other Stuff =
Discovered that I prefer either 1) Trail races or 2) Road races only if they are in a spectacular scenic location like GOG or up in the mountains

Non R: (In state Saturday)
John Genet reports:
Race = Collegiate Peaks 50
Location = Buena Vista
Date = Sat May 4th
Distance = 50 miles
Results = 15th place overall

General =
This was my first race of greater than marathon distance so I didn’t really know what to expect. My goals were to finish in under 9 hours and to avoid a big delay to my training for the Leadville 100. I met the first with a finish time of 8:42. The jury is still out on the second but I’m feeling ok.

For those who have not run Collegiate Peaks 25 or 50, this is a beautiful course to run provided it’s not under 4 feet of snow as I hear it was last year. We had good trail conditions and comfortable weather though it was a little on the warm side for the second of the two loops.

Right =
The combination of long mountain training runs with the ICU group and shorter (16 — 24 mile) flat runs seems to have worked well for me. I was also well rested, well fed and well hydrated (at east for the first 25 mile loop). My main focus for the first loop was to be relaxed. I felt great as I started off on the second loop.

Wrong =
Another goal was to run the first and second loops in the same time ... didn’t do so well here with times of 4:05 and 4:38 respectively. Hopefully a better feel for pacing will come with experience.

I would also handle hydration a little differently. For the first loop I wore a camelback with ~40 ounces of water. I finished this on the first loop along with one cup of water and one of Gatorade at each aid station. For the second loop I didn’t want to carry the camelback and felt it would be sufficient to take 3 cups of fluid at each aid station. I don’t think this was too bad as I never felt real thirsty during the second half but in retrospect I wish I had brought a handheld for sipping.

5/19/02 Sun: A most awesome day brought out a big group of 79. The trail is still slightly damp from the recent rains making it perfect for running. Quite a few (10ish) made it to the top today and already some are running faster than they have ever raced the mountain! The weather was so nice on top that 6 of us collected 7 bags of old rusted metal cans from our adopted section. Chris Britton was today’s lucky winner of a Tie-vac jacket. However, the big news is that despite the big snowstorm last week the snow is all but gone off of the Barr Trail. In fact, the largest patch was just 4 footsteps wide and the total for the whole trail was 33 steps. Even there most of it was very dirty snow and you could avoid it if you wanted and it will most likely be gone by the end of the day with some more foot traffic. Just to be safe however I am calling tomorrow the first no snow day:-) Check out this page to see how this season’s snowmelt stacks up to the last 5 years.

5/16/02 Thur: Before heading up Ruxton for our warm-up the question was asked “why do we run in the rain?” While one answer, “because we are the Incline Club” is correct the real answer was given as “because we might have to race in the rain.” Add to that the fact that it might not be raining where our competition lives and there is no good reason not to get wet! With that, 55 of us proceeded to do a 30 minute tempo run up the Barr Trail. The rain made for a damp trail with perfect traction and the air was crisp and clean. End result? PRs were falling like rain drops! A great day that quite a few regulars missed which really served to mix up the Thursday workout board. That is one reason I for one like bad weather days — some of the competition stays home:-) Kees Guijt was the free T-shirt winner today.
