Subject: Alert for ICers
(Note: This was just sent to me from an IC regular. If you are like me this will really give you pause for thought! Especially in light of what the police officer said.)
Just wanted to pass along an alert to other ICers about parking at Bear Creek/Gold Camp/Section 16 area...
ICers...please be extra cautious when parking in the Bear Creek/Gold Camp/Section 16 parking lots. My car was broken into on Wednesday night and all my personal items were stolen...wallet, checkbook, Franklin planner, running/cycling gear, etc. My friends and I had left for a mtb ride at 6:10 pm and returned at 7:15 pm...just one hour and in broad daylight! They smashed my rear driver’s window and took all my bags. The punks tried using my credit cards within an hour of ripping me off. The police officer said this is becoming a big problem at these trailheads. I hope this doesn’t happen to any of you because it’s been a nightmare trying to get everything reissued, cancelled, reopened and hoping they don’t use my social security number for fraudulent purposes. Be careful!!
A friend of mine on the ride may have a description of the losers...he noticed two early-20ish guys in a blue dodge Neon-type of car driving around the area before we left. They had two bikes in the back, but were not parking, despite open parking spaces. We don’t know if these were the scumbags, but they were behaving suspiciously.
Also, one of the guys on the ride checked the trail area for my bags that may have been dumped, but didn’t find anything. Two of my bags wouldn’t be something you could buy at the store, so if you happen to come across bags that fit this description next time you’re at Bear Creek/Section 16/Gold Camp area...or anywhere...they’re probably mine.
-Black Gatorade duffle bag. The Gatorade is embroidered on it (came from Gatorade USAC sponsor).
-Timbuk 2 Courier bag. “USA Cycling MTB” is embroidered on it. It’s blue, red and grey.
-Black backpack...nothing distinctive.
I’m angry and shocked with the whole thing. Last night I received two hang-up phone calls around 2:45am and 3:20am... It makes me nervous because they literally have all my personal information. I closed all my financial accounts just in time, but the fact that they have my DOB, SS#, passwords, etc. is pretty disturbing. I’m hoping that one of the stores, where they tried using my credit card, will have them on video tape.
