Subject: Incline Club V6 TH #8 LR #28

Last week when I got the e-mail out late on a Thursday I actually received the following e-mail from someone who did not come to that night’s workout:

“I didn’t get the club mail on time, so I thought that the run was cancelled...”

Now because it is important not to publicly humiliate people I will not use his real name, which most of us can not pronounce anyway and probably why he goes by the name of Kees, but suffice it to say that this person is Dutch and, well, they just think different.

At any rate, once again I find myself getting the club mail out late and again I can only say I am sorry. It just sucks when life gets in the way of fun and I am working on putting an end to that nonsense! That being said, in six years NOT ONE IC workout has been cancelled and it will remain that way!!!

In other news, it is looking like it is time to start heading up to Elk Park. Watch for details next week. This week we are still at Soda Springs Park.

NEXT RUNS:
###############################################
Thursday, May 30, 5:30pm — Soda Springs Park
Warm-up to Hydro Street. Tempo run up the Barr Trail for 30 minutes or to No Name Creek whichever comes first. Run easy back down to Hydro Street and do 4 Hydro Street hill repeats!

Sunday, June 2, 8:00am — Soda Springs Park
Run up the Barr Trail to the Bottomless Pit turn-off and back. 2.5-3.5 hours. If it would take longer turn back earlier trying to get to at least Barr Camp.

At last, here’s a snapshot of the aftermath of my fall a few weeks ago. (http://www.inclineclub.com/photos/p_randyfall.jpg) Not really too bad looking overall, so I included a detail of the worst part which you are free to ignore, use in miscellaneous locations, or wave at Yvonne when she’s feeling sorry for herself.

(Matt C adds: Hey, where is the blow-up of the nose damage? From what I heard that was the worst part!!!)

OK, so I am running up Barr Trail. I’ll blame it on my Clydesdale status, but my granny gear is pretty slow. On the other hand, I am committed to not break from my cadence and hike. So on and on I go, and I notice that some people can actually power-hike, then run, then power hike, then run.... and eventually pass me in the process!

I always wonder if my time would be better if I were to try the technique, but I just don’t like breaking my momentum. What’s more important in the long run? Time, or momentum?

And my second issue (I feel comfortable asking you to post this in the newsletter since as of Sunday, I am an “official” ICer!)

My Jeep is down -needs a new engine. So I have managed to bum rides to Colo Springs (I’m in Boulder), and have taken a Greyhound twice... But I can’t do this forever, so I am trying to find a really cheap car to buy (like $400 or less) to last me until Sept., which is when I expect to have saved up for a new engine in my Jeep. I don’t care if this temporary clunker has cracks in the window, a door that doesn’t match the rest of the car, a broken seatbelt that requires to be tied in a knot... whatever. If it can get me from Boulder to Colo Spgs once a week for 4 months, removing me from risk of getting head lice from a Greyhound Seat, I will be very pumped!

Please call me at 303-887-9885 (or email: (e-mail address removed for www posting)) if you or anyone you know has a junky car that you are trying to get rid of.

(Matt C adds: The age-old walk vs run question has no set answer! In short you want to do what gets you up the mountain the fastest. For many running all the way is not an option. For others, who think walking is some sort of crime, they will end up getting passed by those smart enough to know their limits. What I try to get across to people is to learn when and how to do either! I do not believe in the popular notion of walk for so long, run for so long. That is an interval workout and implies that they are going too hard and then having to go easy! Instead, I say let the terrain dictate when you switch back and forth. Run when it is flatter, walk when it is steeper with the goal of having a constant effort! Of course the higher you go the less steep things need to be in order to bring about the switch. Next, when doing the switch it should not be all or nothing. If you are running, first you should run slower, then switch to a faster walk then to a walk as it gets steeper. Reverse the process going the other way. Again the goal is to have as little change in effort as possible.)

If a race is out of state, does it have to be any certain distance to count? We might be in Phoenix the weekend of June 15 — 16 and the only race in all of Arizona that weekend is a 5K. Also do the Garden of the Gods 10 mile and the Summer Round Up 12 K count for Sunday stars?

(Matt C adds: The “R” rules are on the race reports page http://www.inclineclub.com/rreports.htm In summary, any out of state Sat-Mon race counts for a Sunday “R.” The GOG counts because it is at least 10 miles on the road and the SRU counts because it is at least 10K on the trails. As usual, “R” reports must be filled out to get the “R.”.

Speaking of perfect streaks. Today will mark run #35 for 4 perfect streakers who will thus become the first to earn the 2002 Incline Club award. That’s right, so that the award remains meaningful it takes 35 club runs this year but they do not have to be all in a row. http://www.inclineclub.com/award.htm.)

I got quite a bit of mail related to the ICer alert sent out last week (http://www.inclineclub.com/newsletter/2002/lr27a.htm). Most were of the one sentence variety with words aimed at the jerks who do this type of thing that can’t go in a family newsletter. Below are some of the mails I thought you would find informative. I stripped the names out in case the authors do not want it known that they have had similar crimes committed against them:

On a similar topic, my car was broken into at the south parking lot in Garden of the Gods (near the Ute Pass trailhead marker) about 2 months ago. This was also in broad daylight and they took everything. We had approx $1,000 charged within the hour on our credit cards. Maybe the best bet is take only what you can carry with you. The officer told us we were the first break in in GOG in 2 years.

##
Something you may want to pass on to other ICers: I run section 16 a lot and I park not at the trailhead, but about a 1/4 mile south of section 16 trailhead, at the bottom of Mile High Drive. There’s about 8 parking spots there. The owner of the house there, a city park employee, told me cars don’t seem to get broken into while parked in front of the house. Plus, the park employee runs in and out of the home a few times each day.

##
A few summers ago, when I lived near Section 16 and ran it at least once a week, I was sure I’d someday catch the people who were breaking into the cars in broad daylight. I’ve noticed glass, evidence of past break-ins, at that parking lot and others. Last summer the Mount Cutler parking lot had tons of glass. There are security cameras overlooking the Section 16 parking lot, but perhaps they are just there for show. As a precaution, when I drive to a trailhead, I leave my wallet at home and put my keys, drivers license and garage door opener in my Camelbak, which I take with me.

##
This happened to a myself and a girlfriend of mine last year on a cold snowy Saturday. They got our bags but not all the personal information. About a week later I got a call from a guy who found some of my stuff on the section of trail below the parking area by Section 16 — the cut off trail between Bear Creek Road and the Sec 16 Trailhead . He said there was a black backpack, which was my girlfriends, and some other stuff. He was afraid to touch it because it looked like a murder scene. A guy from work went with me to that section of the trail and we scouted off trail through the bushes. We found quite a bit of the stuff that was taken - seems their MO was to go through it quickly, take what was valuable to them and ditch the rest. So, if you could pass this info on to the unfortunate soul who also experienced this, some of his stuff could be in the same area.

That is a huge bummer!!!! Man, that pisses me off. I hope they find those punks. I’d like to warn all ICers to NEVER leave anything of value in their cars. Leave it at home, or lock it in the trunk. This has been a big problem at many trailheads, Waldo Canyon being one of them. I’m really sorry this happened to this IC runner, and I sure hope they catch these guys before they do any more damage.

SHIRT REPORT:
###############################################
Thanks for all the great feedback on the shirts! I want it to be known that Yvonne did most of the work in this area so please let her know — not just me. It was so cool to hear the tourist talking about our shirts as we headed up the mountain last Sunday. Also I am glad so many are liking the new material. I know I for one like this material better than any other I have tried.

If you have not got your shirt(s) Yvonne will be bringing them to the next several workouts. If you wanted your shirt mailed, all but one of those orders (there was one with bad printing that is getting redone) has been sent out and you should get them any day now as they were sent priority mail. If you are one of the 6 people that still needs a small long sleeve shirt that did not come yet those are on the way. If you are one of the 4 people that still needs a small sleeveless those are on the way as well. Yes, it sound complicated and again thanks Yvonne because there is no way it would get done without you! The total was 244 club shirts and 29 more brought in items — jogbras and baby/kid’s clothes. However, Tom Kelecy did not get his club thong printed:-(

5/26/02 Sun: 61 made it out for a Memorial Day weekend run with about a dozen making a summit trip out of it despite the ice that was on the trail from Friday’s big storm. The big news today however was the club shirts! A bunch of us took them for their fist run and several hikers were heard to say “there’s another one of those shirts.” The material we went with this year was well received and the tourists in the summit house got their olfactory glands spared thanks to the new anti-stink properties of the shirts:-)

5/23/01 Thur: 60 got lucky with the weather today. Right about the time we finished our 30 minutes of 1 minute hard, 1 minute easy and bagged our Hydro Street hill repeats the clouds opened up and let go of some serious rain. During the run however we had cool temperatures which made for some fast times. Kelly Ellis was today’s T-shirt winner. Speaking of shirts, the club shirts are back from the printers and we will start handing them out on Sunday:-)
