Was that a welcome rain or what? A few more of those and the Forest Service might... Well, I am not even going to say it. Last week’s taunting by the Gazette was enough of a letdown. The Barr Trail will open when it opens...

Fast running to all of you doing the Summer Round Up, the Vail Hill Climb or any other race this weekend. WEAR YOUR CLUB SHIRTS and please remember to use the report page at http://www.inclineclub.com/rreports.htm for your “R” reports. The reports are a little more consistent that way and that makes them much easier to post.

###############################################
LAST RUN/NEXT RUN:
###############################################
Thursday, July 4, 5:30pm — Soda Springs Park
(We had a run July 4th? Of course!)
Warm-up to bridge at the bottom of Serpentine Drive. 40 minutes of repeats on lower portion of Serpentine Drive. Cool-down back to park.

Sunday, July 7, 8:00am — Soda Springs Park
El Paso Blvd to Crystal Park Rd to Intemann to Section 16 and back or if prefer you can run in the Garden of the Gods. An aid station will be set up at the section 16 trailhead. Note: Don’t do the whole loop if you are racing the BTMR next weekend.

I have a problem with the current race report means of getting credit for a
‘*’. With the current rules, if a race is on Saturday, it must be out of state if you want it to count for a club workout. As you know, a group of us have been running some Ultras, trying to get ready for Leadville. Some of these races are on Saturday. 4 of us traveled to Lake City, a 4 — 4.5 hour drive from here and ran the San Juan Solstice 50 miler. This 50M race is quite possibly the hardest 50 mile race in the US. It has over 12,000 ft. of elevation gain and reaches an altitude of 13,100ft. About 15 miles of it is run over 11,000 ft. All of us had good days at this race and Eric even wore an Incline t-shirt. The awards were Sunday morning, so we stayed the night and hung around for the awards and raffle (Rick won a lamp).

Anyway, my point is, this was a brutally tough race but we get no credit for it. If someone shows up on Sunday and does a short loop in the park they get credit...this does not seem right. I suggest that any race 1/2 marathon or longer, that is run on a Saturday or Monday, and that meets the elevation and trail requirements, should count. My case in point being the Pikes Peak Ascent, this is run on Saturday, but because it is not out of state, those that run the Ascent should NOT get any credit, as per the current set of rules.

(Matt C adds: Since 1998, when the “*” boards were started, the PPA has counted as a club run because the PPA & PPM have always been the main goal races of the club. In fact they were the goal races of the club even before the “*”s. End of story on that point! Next, I think you miss the point of the “*” when you compare a short loop in the park on a Sunday to a race, even a hard one. The “*” has never been about how fast or how far we go otherwise only one person would get a star every week. It is about getting out of bed and coming to a workout WITH THE CLUB! By not forcing everyone to do the same workout it allows for those doing tapers, those hurt, and this year those pregnant to still be involved WITH THE CLUB! The “R” report came about because things got so competitive that some were skipping races so as not to break their streaks. However we made some rules so that it is not just a free for all. Races that might seem logical (Mt Evans, Turquoise Lake) do not count because they are on a Saturday and in state. Those that want their “*” can just show up on Sunday WITH THE CLUB even if they have to run short and easy. While 4.5 hours is a long drive for the race you mention it is doable. Point being that if it is reasonably possible to attend the workout WITH THE CLUB you can’t just stay home and claim you were tired like could happen with some of the 50s up by Denver. However since I am a FIRM believer in going to awards ceremonies (now before someone states the obvious I felt that way before I won things;-) I would be inclined to agree with you on this race because in fact the awards ceremony is part of the race. So quit your whining and send in an “R” report!)

Randy the Sunday runs are not races they are training runs. After running the flats for a week in Nebraska the hills of Colorado did a number on me so I cut it short. Anyway, as you get older you can get away with that kind of stuff. Just ask Jack.

For those looking for some altitude training, try Grey’s Peak (14,270) and Torrey’s Peak (14,267) off I-70 at exit 221 west of Georgetown. The trail starts at 11,230 ft and is 4 miles to the top of Grey’s. It is well-traveled (but rocky) and a fairly moderate grade until the last mile of switchbacks. Saw quite a number of runners there on July 4th. Bagging both peaks gives you about a 9-mile round trip. You can add more mileage by parking further down from the trailhead parking area.

(Matt C adds: Yes, that is the option that several have used. Check out http://www.runpikespeak.com/cgi-bin/forum/show.cgi?tpc=5&post=525#POST525 for another version of this run which, as Devin described, will have you parking lower to give you about a 16 mile round trip.)

Sunday’s Gazette, p. A10, reports Pres Bush ran a 20:29 in a 3 mile race, 26th in a field of 400. Not bad!! War, environment, economy, blah, blah, blah — there’s always time to run!

(Matt C adds: Is this true?)

6/30/02 Sun: 48 came out on this Sunday and it was a hot and smoky one. Many cut their runs quite a bit today getting ready for races next weekend. Others did the whole loop but ran it much easier as another way to cut back. The aid station became a nice reprieve from the smoke and heat and many turned it into a well deserved chat break.

6/27/02 Thur: 54 more ICers took on Serpentine Drive today. Overcast skies provided some relief from the sun but we managed to finish before the rain came. Quite a few reported that they ran all their repeats faster than last week. Bryan Willis was today’s shirt winner.
