Happy Thanksgiving Incline Clubbers!

It was awesome to see so many faces (93!) at last Sunday’s run — newbies and oldbies alike. I hope that your run was a good one. I know running with that many people charged me up in that I went farther than I thought I could go. I took some time off in the off season to try to get some nags healed up and that first hill up the UPT was a rather ugly wake-up call. I had several places where I was going to turn around all planned out. However knowing that there were others ahead of me I just kept on going. True, I wasn’t walking so hot the next day but each run will get a little easier. That’s what the club is about — making what is hard a little easier and pushing ourselves to do more than we thought we could!

If all goes well with this e-mail you will note that it is addressed to you instead of “Incline Club.” In a time where spammers are taking (or is that took) some of the fun out of e-mail the BCC method of sending out the club mail was reaching its limitations. More and more people were reporting that they were not getting the club mails as more ISPs (or the users themselves) block BCC mail be default as an anti-spam measure. At any rate, rest assured that your e-mails are being kept safe and that is why you will only see your name in the TO field.

See you Sunday where we attempt to lose some of the weight that we are going to put on today:-?

With much joy and thanksgiving, Pat and I gladly announce that Payton is officially a Walter. His adoption was legally finalized last Thursday (although he’s held a permanent spot in our hearts for quite some time now :). We are so thankful for all the love and support of our family and friends. God has blessed us richly. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

(Matt C adds: You can see that Payton is turning into quite the handsome youngster at http://www.inclineclub.com/photos/payton2.jpg)

Plan to start season off with a “*” :-), and earn a “R” the following week with marathon in Maryland (state # 32). The marathon is a not a full taper, serious effort but still will probably just do out and back Sunday.

(Matt C adds: Doug made the first run of the season and got his *. He is currently the ICer with the most PPAs/Ms and is 4th on the all time list with 25. For a list of his races see http://www.skyrunner.com/search/find.asp?Last=Laufer&First=Doug)

The Crestone marathon is a GREAT course. Might want to let the Incline Club in on it. I have that marathon penciled in to my 2003 schedule. The “fun run” (4 repeats of the marathon) is sick.

http://mattmahoney.net/crestone/

I have three marathons down since September, AF Marathon in Ohio, Chunchon Marathon and DaechungHo Marathons in Korea. I was 28th at Chunchon and won the DaeChung Lake Marathon. Next marathon is Jinju in one week... Trying now to do a marathon in each of the nine Korean provinces before I leave in one year.

Thanks for the excellent page on screw shoes. I got it on a link from Adam’s trailrunning e-mail. The photos are excellent and easily worth 1000 words. You have taken away my last excuse for not running when the weather is bad.

(Matt C adds: For those that think the IC will use ice and packed snow as an excuse not to run see http://www.skyrunner.com/screwshoe.htm)

R REPORTS:
###############################################
Tony Krupicka reports: (for the first “R” of the 2003 season)
Race = Gobbler Grind Marathon
Location = Overland Park, Kansas
Date = November 24, 2003
Distance = 26.2 miles
Goal = sub-3:00
Results = 2:55:11
General = I ended up having a pretty good race. The weather was pretty good: 37 degrees and overcast, but it was a little windy. The course was two loops on pancake flat asphalt bike trails through a big park. I think there were only about 200 runners in the field, and I went into the race with no other goal than to break 3 hours. I started out at what felt like a conservative race, but when I hit the first mile mark in 6:53 I found that I was already right on pace for my goal. The flat course and abundance of air made the pace for the first 10 miles or so seem ridiculously easy. I hit 10 miles in 68:59, but my last mile had been a 7:00, so I felt like I needed to pick it up. I sure did pick up the next mile with a 6:32! That was the beginning of a mid-race surge that culminated in me passing the 2nd and 1st place men between the 17 and 19 mile marks with mile splits of 6:19, 6:12, and 6:13. I maintained 6:20-30 pace through 22 miles where my hamstrings started feeling like steel cables and my pace slowed to 6:45ish per mile. I just ended up running into the finish like that for the win. This race is small but very well-organized. The post race food is bountiful and I received a Montrail running shirt, a Reebok fanny-pack and a free picture frame with a race photo in it for winning the race. The entry fee was pretty steep ($40), but since I won the race, I felt like I got my money’s worth. The race shirt was also pretty nice: a long-sleeved mock turtleneck. Overall, a successful day. I guess I actually consider this my marathon debut even though I ran a 3:50 at Lake Okoboji seven years ago when I was 12 years old. A well-organized, fast event.

Right = Tapered pretty well. Ran high mileage for the three weeks before that (100+). Ran high mileage all summer (1332 miles for the summer) and most of the fall during cross country season. Did lots of marathon-pace runs of 12-20 miles during the month leading up to the race.

Wrong = I don’t know if this affected my last 4 miles slow-down, but I hardly drank during this race. The weather was cold, I didn’t want to break stride, and it seemed like whenever I took a drink I got very out of breath and off-stride. If the weather hadn’t been so chilly, I would’ve died, but it ended up working out all right. I didn’t practice drinking in training at all. If I had been really serious about running a fast time I would’ve not run XC and trained more specifically for this race, but that is simply not the case because I love XC.

Other Stuff = I think I already covered everything.

NON R REPORTS:
###############################################
Anita Bower reports:
Race = Helen Klein 50 mile ultra
Location = Sacramento California
Date = November 9, 2002
Distance = 50 miles
Goal = finish under 10 hours
Results = 10 hours 49 minutes
General = The Helen Klein 50 was ALL on paved trails, except for about two miles. OUCH. It was very well organized, and there were aid stations every three miles or less, so you didn’t have to carry twenty pounds of survival gear.

Right = Fueled very well during the entire race which was easy to do since there were so many aid stations. Energy level stayed consistent. I also kept a trash bag with me, which came in handy because it poured several hours.

Wrong = I wore less cushioned shoes than normal. My hips and feet paid the price for this dearly. I had to walk some of it. The course was flat, and easy, so I figured I could get away with slightly less cushioned shoes. Boy was I wrong. I should have paid more attention to my number one rule of ultrarunning, “if you don’t bring it, you’ll need it.”

Other Stuff = The course was easy, flat, non technical. It was neat watching all the huge salmon travel up the river. Not something you would expect to see in the middle of the city.

Anita Bower reports
Race = Le Grizz 50 miler
Location = Hungry Horse Montana
Date = 10/12/02
Distance = 50 miles
Goal = finish before dark
Results = finished before dark
Website = http://cheetahherders.com
General = The Le Grizz 50 went around the beautiful Hungry Horse Reservoir, near Glacier National Park. I was told I was very fortunate, because on all the other races, it either snowed, rained, or was windy. The weather was perfect, and I will request this convenience for next year. All of the 85 starters finished, and the unique hand made finishers awards were great.

Right = Carried lots of my own stuff, because the first aid station was at 17 miles. Although there are some in the IC who can do this in an hour or less, it took me almost three hours. I also put my snacks in between two open “Hot Hands” pouches to keep them from getting frozen, since it was cold at the start. I also kept up on calorie intake, about 100 calories a mile, 50 percent from liquid and 50 percent from solid food for the first half of the race.

Wrong = Had a big salad the day before. Enough said on that. In addition, my stomach would only keep down water for the last 16 miles.

Other Stuff = The race was low key and well organized. If one had their own crew for the entire length it would be a great first time 50,(some people did) other wise due to the length between aid stations it might be difficult. The course looked flat on the map, but it was actually rolling, which was nice. All but about 12 miles was on gravel roads. I was surprised to see some Badwater finishers up there as well. It was very scenic, as lots of leaves were turning colors against a blue Montana sky and snow covered mountains.

11/24/2002 What can you say when you start off the season with a club attendance record being smashed but WOW! 93 of us showed up putting the previous record of 80 to shame. This number is even more amazing when you consider that last year only “62” showed for the first run. Although the temperature was below freezing there was still lots of excitement and energy — at least until we hit the first hill on UPT. (http://www.inclineclub.com/photos/evilhill.jpg) From that point on the trail constantly reminded us that it was the boss! No snow or ice to speak of today and to top it off Larry Miller had enough desserts waiting for us at the end of the run to feed a small nation. Welcome to our 7th year!
11/20/2002 An e-mail was sent to the club announcing the end of the off season! This Sunday, November 24th, will be our first long run of the 2003 season. Meet at Soda Springs Park at 8 a.m. for the ####
