Hi ICers,

Running (well writing) a little late today — sorry. However if there is one thing you need to know about the IC it is that no matter when (or if) the newsletter goes out the club runs go on!

Note that this week’s run has a nice bail option for those looking for a shorter run or just wanting to get a recovery run in. Be warned however that lower Williams Canyon is rocky and you should be very careful going over (or is that around) the waterfalls!

Finally, we set another club record last Sunday with 97! This was a real record unlike the week before where I had to adjust the 96 to 94 (See letter below;-)

NEXT RUN:
###############################################
Sunday, January 19, 8:00am — Soda Springs Park
Head out El Paso and take a left after hwy 24 into the GOG. Run up Rampart Range Road to just past the antenna. Start down Williams and head right up to Waldo and back to SSP via UPT. 2.5-3.5 hours. Shorter option is to head all the way down Williams. See map! http://www.inclineclub.com/maps/rrr_williams.htm

I know that John O and I were talking about entering this race and lookie at what happened... ...the 5/3/03 Collegiate Peaks Races have been cancelled due to lack of staffing. Thought others might want to know.

I can’t believe you didn’t realize some of the names on last week’s list were a joke referring to the chance you’d get a new record for attendance: Willie Makit (will he make it?), Betty Wont (bet he won’t). Please! Is it still a record without these two names?

(Matt C adds: Yes it was still a record without the two names but you got me:-)

To all ICers, I want to send you a quick note. I have not made training runs because I live in Divide and no other good excuse. I love the club though. I have been activated and will be sent away with the military this year. I am so frustrated, I think missing my seventh pikes peak marathon in a row rates up with the worst of the blues. Anyway, keep running hard I will think of you while training in the sand.

R REPORTS:
###############################################
Anita Bower reports:
Race = Avalon 50 miler
Location = Catalina Island, CA
Date = Jan. 11, 2003
Distance = 50 miles
Results = 11:02:00

General = I ran this unique island race as my first training run for the 2003 Badwater race in July, which I will hopefully get into again this year. I heard it had lots of climbing and descents. It did. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be. Catalina Island is about 25 miles off the coast of Long Beach California.

Right = Didn’t get sea-sick going out. Did not pet the wild buffalo that roamed freely on the island, although one idiot did and was charged. Perhaps this would have helped me run faster, maybe not. I did not pet the baby rattle snakes either, which apparently some people thought was a good idea. Hydrated with Pedialyte and fueled well, and finished strong.

Wrong = Didn’t go out hard enough. I could have done this course around 10 hours. I ran the last half nearly 90 minutes faster than the first half. I have to try and remember not to run my Badwater pace at other races.

1/12/03 The club attendance record was broken again today when 97 came out for a run. It started out a little cold but warmed up quickly as Kill Hill on UPT had people stripping off the layers. We did the double today with both Waldo and LRR as part of the run. NOTHING can be written to describe the joy (yea right) of doing LRR after doing Waldo. In other news last week it turns out that John Mills broke a bone in his wrist. He did it about one block from finishing the run.
