Hi ICers,
Looks like we will finally get to do a real winter run:-) They are even calling for some Sunday morning snow in one online forecast I saw. However the neat thing about the Rampart Range Road run is that we get some awesome views of the Peak snow and all. More than a few times on that run we have popped out above the clouds and it looked like you could just run on them straight over to the A-frame. Of course we might not see anything but our own breath. Also be sure and watch out for the winds because if they are there it will be COOOLLLLDDDD!!!

NEXT RUN:

Sunday, February 9, 8:00am Soda Springs Park
Head out El Paso and take a left after hwy 24 into the GOG. Run up Rampart Range Road to just past the antenna. Start down Williams and head right up to Waldo and back to SSP via UPT. 2.25-3.5 hours. Shorter option is to head all the way down Williams. Longer option is to do Waldo loop. See Maps. (http://www.inclineclub.com/maps.htm)

R REPORTS:

Teresa Taylor reports:
Race = Rocky Raccoon 50 Mile Trail Run
Date = Feb. 1, 2002
Location = Huntsville State Park, Texas
Course = Four 12.5 mile loops, mostly wooded trail, some jeep road. Lots of roots!!!!
Goal = 10 hours, top 5 women
Result = 9 hr 20 min, 2nd woman, 7th overall
Done Right = Good body management = balanced input and output! Was able to keep pushing myself, walking only about 1/4 mile of entire course. Stayed mentally strong. Challenged for 1st on last loop, but could not hold it.
Done Wrong = Initially I thought I ran the first loop too fast. In retrospect, it kept me in touch with the 1st place woman and all runners ran the first loop a little quicker than the others. A little more training and maybe I could have held on to first place to the finish line!
In all, I was pleased with my race, especially with being able to run as much of it as I did. Running the mountains you have more opportunity to change or break up the pace. This course was ALL runnable without any major hills or bad footing to change pace.
On a sad note, in our second hour of the race we heard some strange loud noises that we later realized to be from the shuttle. We were about 40 miles from the debris field.

Race = Rocky Raccoon 100 Mile Trail Run
Date = Feb. 1, 2002
Location = Huntsville State Park, Texas
Course = Five 20 mile loops, mostly wooded trail, some jeep road. Lots of roots!!!!
Result = 23 hr 58 min, 33rd overall
Done Right = Nothing comes to mind!!!
Done Wrong = I have a big ol list... but most of it revolves around my intense training regimen-not!
Weird = At 20 miles in to the race, at one of the aid stations, an official said The space shuttle exploded upon re-entry. I ran the rest of the day and night with no more news than that. It gave me something to think about...but that was weird.
(Matt C adds: I was forwarded an e-mail about the female winner of the 100. After the race she had severe kidney failure. She was on dialysis and there was a chance that she could suffer a massive heart attack and/or lose one or both of her lower legs to infection. I have not heard more since Tuesday so I am sure there has been some change one way or the other. Lets hope for the best!)

Race = Death Valley Marathon
Location = Titus Canyon, Death Valley, CA
Date = 02/01/03
Distance = 26.2 miles
Goal = finish injury free
Results = finished injury free
Website = http://www.envirosports.com
General = This was another race held in Death Valley which I did as a training run for Badwater. Speed and time wasnt an issue this time. I just wanted to get some good miles in without aggravating any old injuries. Titus Canyon was spectacular, the scenery changed around every curve. Lots of Badwater veterans there as well, which made for lots of interesting conversation along the way. The mood of the race was rather somber, as the space shuttle exploded earlier that morning. It was kind of strange hearing about it in a place called Death Valley.
Right = Envirosports does pick some cool places to run, however, they dont give you a lot as far as well stocked aid stations, and their goody bag is merely a goody envelope. Fortunately I brought two water bottles, and my own food, because they ran out at 15 miles. It was unusually hot this year, mid-80s, and by the time my Badwater friends and I rolled into the aid station there wasnt much left. Death Valley is a bad place to run out of water, no matter what time of the year it is. As far as other stuff done right, I maintained a slow but consistent pace, and didnt aggravate old injuries, and was able to bike to my motel from the finish, and run 12 miles the next day.
Wrong = I could have done this course a lot faster.

2/2/03 Great weather (the calm before the storm) brought out 95 of us for the Waldo/LRR run. Yes, the killer double loop. There is a point (several actually) during the Waldo loop where you can look over and see LRR off in the distance and you cant help but think oh crap. But time and distance wait for no one and soon enough you are not only thinking oh crap but saying as well. Be that as it may several made the whole run for the first time ever proving once again that it is just mind over matter we dont mind so it doesnt matter.
