Happy anniversary ICers!

Yes, I know it is Valentines day as well so happy Valentines day too:-) As for the anniversary our website is one year old today! So many of you have really stepped up and made it a great site with your contributions to both the newsletter and of course the “about me” pages. In the last year there were 1,569,774 successful requests to the site! That is sorta a funky number because a request can be a picture, a page, a background, anything. A more meaningful number (to me anyway) is page views of which there were 179,424. That is an average of 492 page views per day over the last year. However, since the “about me” pages were added in December we have doubled that number and in the last month there has been an average of 995 page views a day! To the original “webteam” and everyone else who has sent in something over the year that got put on the site in one form or the other — THANKS!!!

Last week you may remember Larry Miller wrote that the cold would be the test of how “tough” ICers are. Well I think we passed! While the group of 73 was our smallest of the season the top 46 people on the workout board ALL made it! Amazing – keep it up – it is going to be a great year.

I thought Rampart Range Road had the best running surface in three years. The packed snow evened out most of the ruts and rocks. I did an out and back, as I was scared that the rocks in the lower half of Williams would be ice covered. As it was, a half mile from the bottom of R. R. R. I managed to find the only ice covered rock, did a “John Mills,” landing on my right wrist. For a while Sunday evening and Monday it looked bad, but now the swelling is down some and it appears just to have been a bad sprain. I got out of changing diapers (nappies) for two days!!!!

I was fashionably late, and didn’t have a chance to sign in today. Be sure to give me credit for attendance. Without my weekly star, I have no reason to go on living:(

(Matt C adds: Sure he was there! This is the same David who signed up Willie Makit (will he make it?) and Betty Wont (bet he won’t) for one of our January runs so we might have to ask for verification that he was there!)

Is it possible to see other Incline Club members “about me” pages? I was curious to see where everybody is from, read their bios etc. I figured if you knew someone’s name you could find out by putting that as part of the url but for someone like myself who wanted to just cruise through the list I didn’t know if there was a way.

(Matt C adds: Currently all the “about me” pages are accessible off of the “Sunday *s” page. This may change once we start Thursday runs and then they may get listed on the membership page which would make a little more sense. Also note that Paul, who is from New Hampshire, has a post on the club message board offering ICers a place to stay for Mt Washington:-)

I’m bringing another small group this weekend. so, for the masses (you don’t need to include everything I write here when you post it):

Anyone interested in carpooling from Denver or points north? A few of the DenverTrailRunners (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/denvertrailrunners) are coming down this Sunday. If you are interested in carpooling, send me a message, with where you would be coming from, to (e-mail address removed for www posting)

I’m putting together a group to run the Grand Canyon the April. Rim-rim-rim is 42-48 miles depending on the route. Some of us plan to go the whole way; others will do shorter runs. Some may even stop in Moab on the way there/back for some mountain biking, or just to break up the drive. If you haven’t been to the GC, it’s a must see, even for non-runners. The tentative dates are the weekend of April 19. The following weekend has been discussed too. Still working out the details. If interested, let me know at (e-mail address removed for www posting)

R REPORTS:
###############################################
Lindsay Cavner reports:
Race = Christianson Trail Race
Location = North Mountain Preserve, Phoenix, AZ
Date = Jan.4,2003
Distance = 13.5 miles
Goal = to cross the finish before the 65 year old woman (i am competitive)
Results = Strong finish...time means nothing to me

General = The race was an out and back course mixed with flats and hills...lots of tough gravel and larger ankle twisting rocks. Not too many women racers...believe I was 1 of around 10.

Right = Hydrated well pre and during race. Took gu at the right times which kept me going.

Wrong = I held back too much in the beginning and got stuck behind some really slowbe runners on tough to pass single track...had to expend too much energy to pass them. Further, too much holiday feasting with little long distance runs to prepare further impacted my endurance for this race...but hey, at least I was out there. I also walked some of the steeper hills....Shame on me, I wasn’t even at altitude.....

Other Stuff = Rocky rough terrain with solid packed surface definitely difficult on my ankles, knees and legs in general (Not used to phoenix rocky trail impact as compared to Colorado’s soft trail impact) Need I mention that I miss Colorado running, amongst other things, tremendously! Hoping to be back in under 2 years...keep the trails warm for us.

2/9/03 A low temperature of 9 degrees produced the smallest turnout of the season when “only” 73 came out for the freeze fest. You would think with the cold some of us would have gotten a chance to move up on the workout board but noooo — the top 46 made it so there was little change for most of us. The snow was nicely packed on Rampart Range Road. Williams was awesome in the new snow that has fallen over the week and if any thing it made it seem a lot less rocky:-)
