Hi there ICers,

The message about the new meeting place must have gotten out because Yvonne reports that only about 12 people showed at the normal spot. For her it was a lonely way to earn a * but as they say, even if it saves just one ICer... Remember, we are meeting at Memorial Park which is by the City Hall while the construction goes on near Soda Springs Park.

The weather people are calling for another couple of storms by and on Sunday. Come prepared for anything — LRR should be a monster!

NEXT RUN:
###############################################
Sunday, February 23, 8:00am — Memorial Park (by the City Hall)
Run out the UPT and take a right and head across Hwy 24 and do the Waldo Canyon loop clockwise. Cross back over Hwy 24 and do Longs Ranch Road taking the J-pipe short-cut back to the Barr Trail. Return to park. 2.75-3.75 hours, if it would be longer do just one of the two. See maps! (http://www.inclineclub.com/maps.htm)

BTW, it turns out I fractured my toe on Intemann Trail Sunday, and won’t be able to run for at least 4 weeks, more likely 6-8 :-( !!! I can still do a little biking, so I’ll probably be off riding instead of making the IC workouts for a while.

(Matt C adds: Gary told me he kicked a rock or a root — ouch!)

Laura and I plan to start out early with the ICU group this Sunday. I’m not sure what the check-in policy is, but we’ll swing by the park at the end of the run to see who might still be hanging out. We are feeling in need of a longer run. Why? We signed up for a 36+ mile race on Maui next month — keep in mind this is vacation — it starts in Kahului at around sea level and finishes at the top of Haleakala, over 10,000 ft. We might run into (not literally) Craig Hess while there as he is the one who told us about the run. For a warm up, we plan to run either a 1/2 or whole marathon while on Kauai the week before. Laura is the instigator in this. Really!

Ugh! Okay, for something TOTALLY different, Rick, Tom & Laura Kelecy set out with the Incline Club at 8:00 a.m. We ran Intemann, part of Sect. 16, up High Drive to Trail 666 following Bear Creek to the top past the meadows above the clouds. Rick took a left heading south toward Mt. Rosa (He’ll have to tell you where he ended up). Laura, Tom & I headed west — post-holing up to our knees in snow — and eventually made it to Lake Morraine. Followed the service road back east about 1 1/2 mile and then took a left at Maken Lane (there’s actually a street sign there). We followed Maken two miles to where it parallels the Cog RR tracks about a quarter mile west of the Water Plant No. 3 complex. We followed the tracks 3 miles back to Manitou. Time: 5:08 hr.

Today’s run we where having to bust our own trail through the snow once we hit Jones Park. It was about 6 inches of fresh snow with crusty snow underneath it. It got deeper the higher we got. Not quite as deep as we used to run on the Mount View trail from the Cog over to Barr Trail. Paul, Laura and Tom are the only ones that did the Lake Moraine run. You’ll have to asked Paul if they ran the route you told them about or just went down the service road all the way to the Cog tracks. I thought Larry and Kees were ahead of us but apparently not. They must have turned off somewhere. I turned off before hitting the service road and planned on heading over to Frosty Park but got tried of busting trail through the snow after about a mile and headed down some other trails and back to trail 667 and 666 that we came up. Once around 7000 ft the sun was shining.

That was an awesome run on Sunday. It was nice to have .88 miles less of pavement, very much appreciated on the way back into Memorial Park. But keep in mind we’ll be adding that mileage to the upcoming Waldo/LRR loops this Sunday.

The Intemann/Section 16 trail had it all. Starting out in the foggy low cloud cover (not used to all that moisture in the air), breaking through the clouds near High Point I stopped to gaze back to the south east. It was one of those moments that makes it all worth while. Although we weren’t that high — it felt like being on top of the world. Felt like we could have run out over that sea of white. The vista from the Nessie Rock Overlook was equally beautiful. Then it was time to run back down into the clouds, with trail conditions covering the gambit: dry track, hard-packed snow, and even some sticky red mud! Coming down High Drive was a little slick. Great run!
See you Sunday at Memorial.
P.S. I saw John O’Neil (and puppy Panda) heading up as I was coming out on Intemann Trail.

We did 2 loops (of Section 16). The first loop was fine. The end of the second loop was very muddy, from the road back to the Intemann intersection. Great trail. Spectacular views when we finally got above the clouds.

NON R REPORTS:

Keith Lonnquist reports:
Race = Non-race, So. Calif Trail Runners training run
Location = Pacific Palisades
Date = 16 Feb 03
Distance = 10miles
Goal = meet trail runners & get in a good workout
Results = succeeded
Website = http://www.trailrunnersclub.com/

General = Non-race report, but close.....
I was visiting family in So. Calif, so I found the So. Calif Trail Runners site. They too do Sunday a.m. runs. They were a very nice group of people and happy to have guests. The club is about 100 strong, with an average of about 20 people showing up per run. Because of a late change in locations due to the wet trails, only about 10 were there this Sunday. The club has a number of different trails through various canyons & parks. This is not “LA"--there is a lot of open space and it’s GREEN!!! Very, very beautiful. We did a 10mile point-point--up a fire road and then down a ridge and into/thru a mile or two of suburbia ($5M houses!).
Right = Actually woke up in time to make the 45min drive & arrive at 6:20a.m. Not sure if I was any faster, but felt good at the low altitude. This was a relatively easy run, but their better trails were still muddy from the storms that hit earlier in the week. The club has a runner go out early & mark the trail with flour--this was a very nice touch. They run a lot of different courses, so it’s nice to see a small arrow at the trail & road intersections. (On my other days there, I also ran in the hills south of Thousand Oaks--great trails there too.)

Wrong =

Other Stuff = You bet that I wore my IC shirt! Their club charges $45/year (!!!) to join. I needed to sign a waiver to join them as a guest--no problem, of course, but interesting that it is required. We are very lucky to have the IC. Thank you, Matt!!!!!

2/16/03 82 of us managed to find the new meeting spot forced on us due to the construction going on at our usual spot. A very overcast day with high humidity put a chill in the air. However, the talk of the day was busting out above the clouds on Section 16 which some described as looking out onto a never ending sea of white. Then it was back into the clouds and the cold but at least from our new meeting spot the run was .88 of a mile shorter. Of course that means next week’s run in the other direction will be .88 longer:-)
