Hi there ICers,
116 that is how many came out last Sunday! The previous VanFeed record was 81. What can be said about that but THANK YOU Neal and Teresa Taylor for hosting an awesome VanFeed the 5th annual. Not to be forgotten is Jeanne Mills who also slaved away for us on one of the stoves. All the extra munchies brought by the runners was greatly appreciated as well. I hope to get the photos of the this years stupid people tricks posted soon but in the meantime suffice it to say that Neals stick trick was good for some serious laughs. Of course Kees Guijt is STILL bragging that he won the bag pickup (with your mouth while standing on one foot) contest! Lastly, a personal thanks to those of you who made a donation to help pay for the website. We did not make a big deal about it but a bowl was placed out on a table and the $84 collected will go a long way to covering the yearly costs of the site. Although there was a surplus from last years donations from the Pikes Peak talk I gave most of that got spent on fixing the webcam after it fried on a 95+ degree day last year.
In other news, I have been following some of the stuff happening on another mountain on the other side of the world. If you somehow missed it this is the 50th anniversary of the summiting of Mt Everest. Currently the population at Base Camp is over 800 and just last week over 120 people made it to camp 3 on a single day it is a zoo over there! Of particular note is the local ties to some of the people climbing this year. Gary Scott, who lives in the Springs, is on a team and I think based on what one of our rock climbing ICers told me he may be going for a speed ascent record. Jesse Rickert, who won last years Pikes Peak Marathon, has made a 5 person team that will also try to summit. Jesse is part of a reality game where 50 people did all kinds of things (no, not things like eating bugs) to win the chance to climb Everest. Finally, of particular interest to me is the climb of fellow Skyrunner Fabio Meraldi. He is going for the speed record as well - not just up, but up and down - in less than 24 hours. I believe Fabio is going to eat this thing for breakfast! Of course for all of them, some of it will come down to luck because no matter who you are you can get killed really fast up there. At any rate, if such a thing interests you here are some links to follow.

NEXT RUNs:
###############################################
Thursday, May 1, 5:45pm Hydro Street
Meet and warm up from Memorial Park to Hydro Street. Leave the park at a time that gets you to Hydro Street on time. Do a tempo run up the Barr Trail for 30 minutes or to No Name Creek, whichever comes first. Easy run back down the Barr Trail and then do 8 (yes 8) Hydro Street hill repeats. Cool down back to the park.
Sunday, May 4, 8:00am Memorial Park
Option 1) Run to Barr Camp and back via the Barr Trail.
Option 2) Run (hike) to the top of 10,707 Camerons Cone. This is a VERY steep trail and for sure this will be classified as a hike for many. Round trip time I would guess to be longer than your Barr Camp round trip time. On the other hand, the views from the top are awesome!!! The goal will be to clean the broken glass off the top. There is not a lot and 4-5 people with a small Safeway bag should do it. Of course if more make the top we all carry less:-) We will mark the trail with either flower or surveyors tape.
Of course there is always the self made options 3 through 100.

Given the choice between the Vanfeed and hanging out in the Philippines with
SARS and Abu Sayif, Id much rather do the Vanfeed. The boss gave me little
choice though. I sure miss running with the club. Thank Neal and Teresa
for the invite just the same. Maybe Ill make it back for the 10th Annual.

R REPORTS:
###############################################
Curt Krieger reports:
Race = Trail Mix 25K or 50K ultra
Location = Bloomington, MN.
Date = April 19, 2003
Distance = 25K
Goal = Place in top two of my age group
Results = 1:55:46 : good for 2nd in 50-59
Website = http://www.trailmixracemn.org
General = Successful annual race which includes three races in one. A 50K solo, 50K team race and 25K solo. Almost always includes some mud and a wide range of trail types; field, singletrack, ski slope, wood chips and even blacktop and gravel for short stretches.
Right = Ran relaxed even over some of the more difficult stretches.
Wrong = Didnt finish strong when challenged at the end of the 25K distance.

Joel Jenkins reports:
Race = Top O the Tantalus
Location = Puu Ualakaa State Park
Date = 20 April 03
Distance = 7.5 miles
Goal = 1:30
Results = 1:40
General = Yes, it is spelled correctly. GREAT run, felt like I was back in Colorado. Started out in a slight drizzle, down the side of the ravine into, literally, the cloud that steadily increased the rain to a torrent. Calf deep water for parts of the run, goes through a bamboo forest, ginger plants, lots and lots of roots.
Right = Right shoes, Salomon XAs, ugly but they work great. Brought water this time, last race I didnt think Id need any. Found humor in the weather, thought back to the runs to Barr Camp in Feb/Mar last year and appreciated the relative warmth.
Wrong = Nothing really.

Steve Bremner reports
Race = Nagano Marathon
Location = Nagano Japan
Date = 20 Apr 03
Distance = 26.2 miles
Goal = 2:49
Results = 2:56
Website = http://www.naganomarathon.gr.jp/english/
General = Woke up to rain. The rain continued steadily right up to race start, then it stopped!
Almost did not make it the start. I understood a bus would be leaving the hotel in Nagano to the race start more than twenty miles away every ten minutes up until 0700 (race start at 0905). Wrong! There was only one bus that was to leave at 0630 sharp.
I sauntered down around 0645, the last one to make a very full bus of foreigners. They were waiting for me!
The bus arrived in plenty of time. Indeed I had too much time on my hands to spend seeking ways to avoid the rain fall.
The Japanese have an annoying practice. In between the elite runners and the rest of the pack (I was #1 seed in this group!) there were some 900 runners who were members of some Japanese Federation of Sports. A Japanese runner explained to me that to achieve this elite status they only have to pay annual dues of 20,000 yen (about $200). Slow runners to dodge in the opening strides.
The first 5K were downhill though and I breezed through without trying in 17:03, and 10K in 36:00. I knew I had to put on the brakes, so when I slowed to 4 minute Kms I thought I was okay.
I didnt feel right after the 10K start. It is not a good sign when you are conscious of every km early on. I had to push to reach the half in 1:20. After that is was small goals: make it 25 Km, then at 30 km see how you feel, 35 km is the bridge (after you made it past 32 km and the 20 mile wall), then gut it out to the finish.
Right = Put on the brakes
Wrong = Ran too hard on the start, though it was downhill it took its toll
Other Stuff = The race was meticulously organized. The finest detail was attended to. You can likely expect this from any Japanese race, since they tend to be very organized and attentive to detail. I particularly liked how they had large signs ahead of each table noting water or sports drink. No guessing.
Please, if you have the chance, run a marathon in Japan! You will be glad you did so! Gaijin are treated royally.

Derek Griffiths procrastinates at reporting:
Race = Spring Runoff
Location = Pueblo, CO
Date = 3/2/203
Distance = 10 Miles
Goal = Marathon Pace (6:00/mile)
Results = 5th OA in 61:04
General = Flat course with some snow on the Bike Path section which slowed times a bit. Not enough volunteers, as I missed 3 turns, adding about 1/2 mile to my race. It didnt matter, as I would have finished 4th instead of fifth. My time would have been just under 6:00s though, and that was my goal.
Right = Picked it up the last 3 miles to 5:45s
Wrong = Went out too hard (5:35) for a race that I wanted to run marathon pace at. Missed 3 turns, adding about 1/2 mile to my race.

NON R REPORTS: (Not at least 10K on trail or 10m on roads)

Michael Hagen reports:
Race = Y-Bi Classic Duathlon
Location = Pueblo West, CO
Date = 4/13/03
Distance = 2.5 mile run/11.2 mile bike/3 mile run
Goal = To get an early season multi-sport race in for experience, and, if all goes well, to win.
Results = 2nd place 1:00:14
Website = http://www.socorunners.org/scrrs342.htm
General = A low-key duathlon on rolling hills with a bit of wind.
Right = Didnt make any major mistakes. Paced fairly well.
Wrong = A bit flat perhaps from harder/more running than normal the week before, but thats fine as this was a bit of a discovery race.
Other Stuff = Hmmm, pizza!

4/27/03 Sun: The 5th annual Neal and Teresa VanFeed (with the assist from Jeanne Mills) brought the runners out in droves today. 103 IC regulars and 13 newbies (half of which were family members of ICers) combined for a total of 116! So much food was eaten that some of us thought we should do another run to make up for the extra weight gain. Stupid people tricks killed a lot of time with 2 new tricks good for some serious fun. Photos will be added someday. Oh yes, there was also a run today to Barr Camp and back. It is amazing how much snow melted from last week to this week. Little snow until about 3/4 of a mile from Barr Camp and even there it was patchy.
