Hi ICers,

A note about parking. Last Saturday, while Yvonne was running, Kyla and I were hanging out by Hydro street. We (well me, since Kyla didn’t care) could not believe the number of people who were parking in COG spots and then heading up the Barr Trail or the Incline. The COG manager was telling some to move and calling the tow trucks on others. I asked one couple if they saw the sign they parked right in front of and they said, “yes, we saw it but we were not sure if there would be any spots left at the trailhead.” THIS IS BULLSHIT! They did not even bother to check. Now I know ICers are not parking in COG spots (please say I am right) but if you are please stop! The COG does good things for the Pikes Peak Ascent, the Pikes Peak Marathon and the Barr Trail Mountain Race. While it is true that there is not enough parking at the trailhead for the Barr Trail don’t make the COG have to deal with it. I know some Thursday people are cutting it close on making the 5:45pm time but this is not an excu se either. Park below Winter Street or in the Barr Trail trailhead. The COG has a lot of respect for the IC because they know we stay out of their way. Lets keep it that way - they have enough jerks to deal with!

Speaking of the Barr Trail Mountain Race, registration is underway. This is the club run for July 13th. You can sign up online at www.runpikespeak.com. Don’t miss out! A couple of ICers waited too long last year:-(

NEXT RUNs:
###############################################
Thursday, May 22, 5:45pm — Hydro Street
Meet and warm up from Memorial Park to Hydro Street. Leave the park at a time that gets you to Hydro Street on time. Do 1 minute hard, 1 minute easy up the Barr Trail for 30 minutes or to No Name Creek, whichever comes first. Easy run back down the Barr Trail and do 8 Hydro Street hill repeats. Cool down back to the park.

Sunday, May 25, 8:00am — Memorial Park
Run to the Bottomless Pit sign and back via the Barr Trail. We may also head out Mountain View and back if we are feeling like doing more. Elk Park Trail is also starting to melt out so that may be an option as well.

Will there be Incline Club shirts for sale this year?

(Yvonne Carpenter responds: Yes, I have called several places. We will be getting BOA shirts, like 2 years ago, from Colorado Running Company. They have worked out a pretty good deal for the club. I am looking through the catalog at some neat new things (like a long sleeve with a half zipper) and hope to start taking orders soon.)

I totally agree with your philosophy that anyone can run in good weather! Remember — “Somewhere in the world someone is training when you are not. When you race him, he will win.".

Judy and I will be leaving for Colorado Springs this Saturday. I will be joining you guys for your next Thursday run. I will be sucking wind, tired, old, etc., but most important — I will be there!!!!

I’m really looking forward to joining fellow ICers this summer for some really great workouts. On Thursday, I will make sure to introduce myself to you because I appreciate the opportunity to run with such a neat bunch.

Have a great run this Sunday and I look forward to meeting you on Thursday!

PS I’m the summer cog engineer from Virginia

Unfortunately “Soccer Dad” responsibilities have relegated me to the ranks of a virtual IC member for the time being. However last year your maxim about bad weather held true. Several cold and rainy Thursday workouts in May were perfect preparation for the cold / rainy Mt. Washington race in June.

Yea Know.... if the person who was wondering about a run during bad weather came out Thursday they would of had a treat.....no rain (maybe a few drops) and cool temps.

Love Frogs ‘About Me Page’. Does he need a bath or is he just getting ‘leather skin’ from being outdoors so much without suntan lotion?

Which brings me to .... what’s up with the guy running Barr Trail Thursday with the purple pineapple? Does Frog have competition?

(Matt C adds: Darn! I missed the purple pineapple. However I have seen a couple walking their bird (in a cage no less) several times!!!)

Elk Park trail still has snow as of this Thursday (5/15) at noon. Some say they got to A-Frame ok but thereafter snow is present.

We had a blast doing the “van-feed” again. Thanks for supporting it! We are looking forward to 6th annual! 117 people and almost exactly that many pancakes!!!

The A-frame run was no problem going up. The section between Bottomless Pit sign and A-Frame is about 30% snow. But, it is hard enough to just stay on top. The only thing was it sometimes required a little higher knee lift. Coming down was slippery on the snow a couple of times, nothing major.

I do have a little story about a question I was asked toward the end of the trip… Later on that:-)

We won’t be there this weekend either… We will be at the Indy 500 on Sunday!

I just wanted to make sure that my vote is counted for the Cameron’s Cone run. I was sick the day we ran that course, so I only did 1/2 of the run. However, the 1/2 I did run, I really enjoyed. I hope that we will run that course again!!!!!

I have something maybe you could post in the newsletter next week. I’m running Leadville this summer and looking for slow to average speed runners to train with. Mostly I’m looking for someone or a group to do long runs with (15-30 miles?) once or twice a week. I suspect there are some Leadville or ultra runners in your group who train together, and I would love to join them. Anyone who would like to contact me can do so at (e-mail address removed for www posting). Thanks!

R REPORTS:

Stephen Mitchell
Race = Ordinary Mortals Triathlon
Location = Pueblo, Colorado
Date = 18May2003
Distance = 5k (after 550m swim and 20k bike)
Goal = 1:06 something
Results = 1:06:34 (time incorrect on results)
Website = http://www.socorunners.org

General = 550 meter swim in a very warm (hot for swimming with a swim cap) indoor pool. 10 1/2 laps (21 lengths).

20k bike on a mostly flat course (there’s a speedy downhill to start, a short hill and a steady but shallow climb to the turn around). An out and back.

5k run on a mostly rolling course, only with short hill at about the half mile out point). An out and back.

Right = Ran with Incline Club.
Prepped like a Sunday run.
Knew the course from last year.

Wrong = Maybe my bike is getting too old.
Couldn’t get a hotel, so we had to get up early to get there.

Other Stuff = I’m not sure how my time was messed up, but the fellow who was in my heat and a half step ahead of me at the finish got a 1:06:33, while I got a 1:07:17 on the results page. They used a manual system for splits, so that might be expected with the large turnout.

Race = 7Sisters Trail Race
Location = Amherst, MA
Date = May 4, 2003
Distance = 12-miles
Goal = Top-3 woman
Results = 2nd Female/2:11:18
Website = http://www.7Sisterstrailrace.com

General = Wow, what a kick-ass race. There’s no rest areas on this course! I was given adequate warning of the technical and hilly scope of this race, I approached it very conservatively. I ended up having a solid race and really fun run.

Right = Got enough rest the night before and ate a typical race morning breakfast. Was well-hydrated, unlike the day before’s race at Merrimack. I was very relaxed and my goal was to place in the top-3 females.

Wrong = Not much, but to be more competitive on this course, I need to practice on much more technical terrain on the descents (it’s very different than the Colorado trails!). My climbing felt very strong, so I was pleased.

Other Stuff = The woman who won had a great race and this is definitely her course (she holds the three-fastest times on the course). I was pleased with my fourth-fastest female time, especially since this isn’t the type of terrain I train on in Colorado. There were even sections in which you have to climb up and down rocks, so it wasn’t all running! I would definitely recommend this race as a “must do” trail run.

Race = Spring Chill Triathlon
Location = Loveland, Colorado
Date = 4 May 2003
Distance = 10K (after 1.5k swim, 40k bike)
Goal = Finish (hadn’t done Olympic dist. in 15yrs)
Results = Finished!!!
Website = http://www.springchill.com/

General = Swim in Boyd Lake 1500 meters around a “square” course. The swim course for Olympic distance competitors required you to run a short distance in between the two laps around the course. Boyd Lake was mostly empty, maybe 40 feet below normal. The water was about 52 degrees and smelled of hydrogen sulfide (yes, that stinks like rot). Wetsuits were required.
Bicycle 40k (about 25.5 miles) through a flat mostly in town course. Two laps required for the Olympic distance. Water bottles at the 12 and 24 mile point.
Run 10k on the park trail that was flat.
Event was chipped timed. This was the first year for this event. They had very few awards to hand out, they only gave first place awards to 10-year age groups. Most of the money must have paid for the chip timing.

Right = Trained with the Incline Club, it’s good for just about everything.
Drove the course.
Got to Loveland the day before the race.
Ate and prepped just like any Sunday run.
Wore a correct fitting wetsuit.
Left the watch in the transition area.
Enjoyed the race.

Wrong = I wouldn’t know it was wrong, if it was wrong.

Other Stuff = The water seemed to be cold for everyone, but I got out a bit warm due to wetsuit. Not bad for a first year event. They were undermanned, but very helpful and friendly. Chip timing probably cost them a mint and it showed in the awards given.

Race = Merrimack River Trail 10-mile
Location = Andover, MA
Date = May 3, 2003
Distance = 10-miles
Goal = Win and run faster than my GOG 10-mile race time
Results = Not too good. 2nd woman/5-minutes slower than GOG time!
Website = http://www.coolrunning.com

General = The course was forward and fun. It was described to me as being really “flat,” but there were a couple of steep hills throughout the middle of the course. The first two and last two miles (it was an out-n-back) were flat and fast.

Right = Well, not much. I got into Boston Friday night, slept at a friend’s house, then got up the next day for the race. I knew I was dehydrated before the start, so that wasn’t a good sign...more of that later in the report.

Wrong = Not enough sleep, not enough fluids prior to race (thus, resulting in the nasty side stitches!), and wasn’t expecting the short, steep climbs in the middle section of the course (I would’ve taken a slightly different race approach). The last few miles I had to slow down considerably because of the side stitches, then the last mile I actually stopped at least 3 times. It wasn’t a good race for me!

Other Stuff = The course and race were really cool. I liked the course and the race organizers made it a good time. The overall male and female winners won a homemade apple pie...yum! I’ll have to try and win next year!

Laura Mitchell reports:
Race = Ordinary Mortals Triathlon
Location = Pueblo, CO
Date = May 17,2003
Distance = Sprint distance
Goal = To have fun and finish
Results = 12th overall, 3rd in age group
Website = http://www.socorunners.org

General = This was a great Triathlon for a beginner like me! The swim was a 525 meter indoor pool swim. The water was very warm. The bike was a 12 Mile road race on rolling hills. The run was a 5K road race on rolling hills. 238 women competed on this day. Men competed the next day. That is a nice set up for people with children, because both parents can compete in this race on different days. A lot of families were there. This was a very low key, low stress race — just right for my first triathlon!

Right = Train with Incline Club! That kind of work out helps with any athletic event. I got advice from “real” triathletes about transitions etc... I arrived at the race in plenty of time to set up, relax, and sign in. My family, and some friends were there for moral support. I didn’t drown! Despite a lousy swim, I made up a lot of time on the bike and run. I enjoyed this race. It was fun and challenging to try something new.

Wrong = I didn’t train at all for the swim, and it showed. Only 30 out of 238 were slower than me! My goggles kept filling with water. I have a lot to learn about swimming. I didn’t train for the bike either. It’s a good thing I run!

5/18/03 63 came out for a run up to the Bottomless Pit sign although many called it a day at Barr Camp. Overcast skies helped on what was otherwise a fairly hot day. One ICer who made it all the way to the A-frame reports that from the pit sign to the A-frame is about 30% snow but it is hard and easy to run on. It is also melting rather fast. Brenda Cowell won today’s T-shirt although it should be noted that her husband was the one who drew her number...

5/15/03 While the ominous weather may have scared some off the 45 ICers who showed were treated to perfect running conditions and cool crisp mountain air. A 30 minute tempo run went rather well for many and it was nice to have a little traction on the trail thanks to the dampness. The 8 Hydro Street hill repeats were as evil as ever. Fred Wright was today’s T-shirt winner.
