Subject: Test: Incline Club V7 TH #8 LR #28
Hi there ICers,
This is NOT a test sorry for letting that one slip by! However it did make for a hundred or so entertaining e-mails. My favorite? Grade: A - execution, F - documentation. I was making some modifications to the club mail program and forgot to change one line of code for the test and thus you all got a copy of the test that was supposed to only go to me:-( Oh well, I now know for sure a lot of the club e-mails are valid:-)
BEST WISHES from the IC to Eric Billmeyer and Terri Cassidy who tie the knot this Friday!
Here are some direct links to some recent photos added to the Club photos page.

Could you put out a thanks to Jordan, Dave, and Bruce for helping out the guy (Andy Wooten) who hurt his ankle and couldnt get down without help. He sent me an email and asked me to relay his thanks to them all. He is not sure yet if he will be able to run on it for a while or not, but he was very glad to have help down the mountain.

Fred Wright writes in part:
Out of interest I was three minutes faster to No Name, ten minutes faster to Barr Camp, and nearly four minutes faster over the Barr Camp to B. Pit Sign. These are over this years previous times, but also close to my training best ever. Of course, I might have been more rested, but just that would not have made such a difference. Thanks for the tips, and if you see me slipping back, slap me beside the head!!!!

Totally agree with you concerning people parking in places where they
should not be doing so. I am sharing your remarks with my supervisors at
the Cog, so they know ICers are doing all they can to be sure we are not the ones taking up the Cog parking spots.

Went out to Elk Park Saturday. Lots of snow past the meadow (2 mi out).
Apparently we were the first out there for a long time. Had to break trail
thru ankle to mid-thigh deep snow for a good two miles thru the trees with
intermittent snow field crossings the last mile and 1/2. Was much easier
coming back of course. I hope people start using it.
I strongly agree with your comments on cog parking.

Just a note to let you all know that I have not quite dropped off the face of the planet...but have come pretty close. I have had some serious health issues to deal with, this year. This situation has kept me from being able to run, coming to the IC Club workouts, etc. I believe I will be able to work through this and I am making progress. I cannot predict when, but Ill just say Ill see you guys on the trail AS SOON AS I CAN ! :-). Happy Trails to All,

Bill Ransom reports:
Race = Rocky Mountain Double Marathon
Location = Laramie, Wyoming
Date = May 25, 2003
Distance = 52.2
Goal = 10 something
Results = 11:09
Website = http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/marathon/
General = This race took place in the Medicine Bowl National Forrest between Laramie and Cheyenne, WY. Two hours after the 6 am start a very thick fog finally burned off and we were actually able to see the park scenery. There were lots of aspen groves, streams and really interesting rock formations. The 13 mile out and back route was dirt and gravel park access roads with 3 miles of asphalt. After the fog lifted and it started to warm up a little, I was able to run in my usual shirtless attire, thus avoiding that bane of male distance runners: M-NAS, Male Nipple Abrasion Syndrome. :-) My only gripe was the asphalt and the dust that was kicked up by passing cars.
Right = For the past three years or so Ive had a problem with severe leg muscle cramping. This usually happens to me at about the 20-25 mile mark of a long training run or race. I talked with our Bad Water diva, Anita Bower, about this when she was in the Springs a couple of months ago. She suggested Pedialite the infant enzyme replacement formula stuff. I decided to give it a try. Since Im a childless bachelor, I had to fight back an extremely strong bout of cold sweats and venture down no mans land, the baby isle in my local Walgreenss a very unpleasant experience, indeed. But, son of a gun, the stuff worked. No leg cramps for 52.2 miles! Thanks, Anita! The orange Pedialite actually tasted pretty good, too. Now, if I can get Walgreens to move it to a less threatening isle...
Wrong = I had my usual pre-race breakfast of champions: cherry Pop-tarts and a Diet Coke. Despite that and aid station goodies, I flat ran out of gas and had a major bonk three miles before the finish line. I had to walk the last two miles at a blazing pace of 20 minutes a mile. (Note to self: Eat more prior to an ultra.) But hey, I was happy no leg cramps.
Other Stuff = There was a spaghetti dinner the night before the run where I met several really nice folks. This world would be a much better place with more runners (and more good ol boys from Texas, of course). Yee-ha!!!

kees guijt reports (for a Thursday R):
Race = eagles peak challenge
Location = usaf academy
Date = 22 may
Distance = 1.2 miles
Goal = prove to Larry I could beat the top female
Results = blistering 21 min/mile pace
General = Think that your pace on Pikes Peak is slow, try my almost 21 min/mile winning pace! This is the 3rd annual race up one of the peaks on the academy, Eagles peak (or North peak). The race is only open to personnel working at the base although some Carpenter guy was invited too. The trail has some flat sections but is pretty technical in some spots to make up for the almost 2000ft elevation gain in 1.2 miles. The race is started at 15 second intervals with the fastest predicted time starting first. Entries are limited to 150 people.
Right = Went out relatively easy on the not too steep first section, the whole Go out hard thing is overrated! In a race with this steep of an ascent there is no way to recover. Thought I knew the course pretty well since I had done it twice in the past week. Did win the race (by more than 6 minutes.) and was under 25 minutes.
Wrong = Did go up the course with the Carpenter guy 2 days before the race because the race was cancelled that day due to rain/snow. Probably not a good idea to do the race 2 days before the race, but it was fun to go up in the fog and rain with some snow on the ground. Carpenter never showed up on the new race day. I didnt expect anybody else to be too close to my time. However, the 2nd starter got really close to me in the beginning so that made me push probably a little bit harder than I wanted to in the beginning. With the time trial start it is just hard to relax if somebody is creeping up. Because I was concentrating so much on optimizing the footing I actually lost the trail for a few seconds. Cant complain too much though and it is a really fun race/course.

Jackie Burhans reports:
Race = Bay to Breakers
Location = San Francisco, CA
Date = May 18, 2003
Distance = 12K (7.46 miles)
Goal = Run as much of it as possible, dont freeze.
Results = Sunny day, 2:02:34 16,535th overall!!!
Website = http://www.baytobreakers.com
General = Annual trek to No. Cal to visit family in Sacramento, Sonoma and to run B2B in SF and vacation in the city.
Right = Nice visit with families, good home-cooked meals, great restaurant means, took Jasper on a cable car ride and to eat in Chinatown with chopsticks.
Stayed in Bay View boutique hotel 2 blocks from race start in SF. Pools for Jasper in all hotels.
Wrong = Stayed at La Quinta Inn in Sacramento (feh!) Pool not heated--place just not clean. James got sick 2 days into trip which meant we had to walk in last two miles. It hurt more to walk than to run by then.
Other Stuff = Bonnie Rait was featured performer at Footstock after the race. We put a fiberglass rod with surveyors tape for streamers on the front wheel of the baby jogger so no one would trip on us--it worked very well!
I know its not the race to go for a PR but I do wish people would tend more to walk on the right, run on the left.
The BEST part is seeing the folks in salmon costumes running upstream"--they usually pass us as we are heading into the 3rd mile--they are fast salmon!

NON R REPORTS: (not enough of a run for in state - I missed that point last week)

Susan Broz reports
Race = Ordinary Mortals Triathlon
Location = Pueblo, CO
Date = May 17, 2003
Distance = 525 meter swim, 20 k bike, 5 k run
Goal = to be faster than last year
Results = I was faster than last year w less perceived effort
Website = http://socorunners.org
General = I wanted to beat my time from last year and I did. The swim is a pool swim in a very HOT pool. The bike course is rolling. On Saturday we had no wind. I suspect the men might have had wind on Sunday. The run has several hills. The finish is uphill. It is a well run, low key race. I use it for training. I was happy to finish a couple of minutes faster than last year with less effort (ok, I should have gone harder..)
Right = Incline club work outs. Kept thinking on the run: this is not as steep as Ruxton..
Wrong = I am race rusty. I raced quite a bit in the 80s and early 90s and I think I am race smart ( can pull off good transitions, etc,) but I really am no longer race smart. Somehow my bike got into the small front chain ring and I did not realize it on the way out. Lost some minutes on that.

5/25/03 72 came out for an awesome day to run above the clouds literally. Just above Barr Camp we busted out into the sun. Looking East, the only thing above the clouds was 10,707 Camerons Cone which was a club run several weeks ago. On the way back down the clouds really got thick (perhaps we could call it fog now) and around No Name visibility was only about 20 feet. An awesome day for sure! The snow report goes like this. No snow till Barr Camp. A small patch across the stream right after the camp. None until the small foot bridge halfway to the Bottomless Pit Sign. No more until you get into the thick trees on the first long switchback after the sign. Fairly patchy but very runnable the final 5-6 switchbacks to the A-frame. David Reily was todays T-shirt winner.
5/22/03 52 made it up to Hydro Street for 30 minutes of 1 minute hard, 1 minute easy. Quite a few report that they are getting their pacing down for this workout. The trail was very dry today which made the downhill a little more dicey. 8 Hydro Street hill repeats rounded out the day.
5/20/03 The Incline is back in the news again (http://www.inclineclub.com/incline_old.htm). A few years later and the same old story. Note: The Incline Club no longer does the Incline as a club run...
