Subject: Incline Club V7 TH #10 LR #30
Hi there ICers,
Did we sneak in there weather-wise yesterday or what? An hour or so earlier and we would have had hail. An hour or so later and it would have been rain and lightning. Actually I was hoping for some rain to trim down the number of Thursday perfect streakers but alas all 12 made it.
Well done at the Garden of the Gods 10 Mile!!! While Gs for the race are automatic if you did the GOG10M and have less than 10 or so club runs you might want to check that you got your G on the * board. Also, anyone who volunteered gets a V so if that is you just let me know.
After one week 107 Incline Club shirts have been ordered! Dont forget to place your order and pay for your shirts by the 22nd which is next Sunday. Order here:
http://www.inclineclub.com/shirt/
After 4 weeks the Barr Trail Mountain Race is now 75% full. Register here: http://www.runpikespeak.com

NEXT RUN:
###############################################
Thursday, June 12, 5:45pm Hydro Street - DONE - we missed the rain:-)
Meet and warm up from Memorial Park to Hydro Street. Leave the park at a time that gets you to Hydro Street on time. Do a tempo run up the Barr Trail for 30 minutes or to No Name Creek, whichever comes first. Easy run back down the Barr Trail and then do 10 Hydro Street hill repeats. Cool down back to the park.
Sunday, June 15, 8:00am Memorial Park
Run to the Bottomless Pit sign or even the A-frame and back via the Barr Trail. Check the car race practice schedule before doing a summit run!
Note: The first scheduled club Elk Park run will be the 29th. This is the day after the car race. While convenient, the main reason for the delay is to let a little more snow melt off the top. For those who dont mind the occasional snow traverse however, go for it it is awesome up there!

I need a * for yesterday. Tried to drive to Elk Park but the upper half of the road was reserved for car practice until 8:00-8:30. So I just drove back to Manitou Springs and ran BT to the Bottomless Pit sign. Not many ICRs out at all! Between the parking puzzle and car practice Elk Park is getting to be a hassle.
(Matt C adds: We had a turn-out of 46 on Sunday. Not too bad for GOG 10M Sunday. Last year only 22 showed on that day.)

Valerie Prothe writes:
Not sure if anyone in the club would be interested, but attached is the schedule as given to me by someone involved with the car race. Also, heres their web page, which has a schedule identical to the attachment:
http://www.ppihc.com/schedules.htm
I realize this may be incorrect, but just thought I would pass it along.
Also, you offer advice on how to run Pikes Peak, however I have a different insight, being more of the 4 hour ascent range. Would it be appropriate for me to submit some advice to the web page for those running the Ascent for the first time (in the 3:45-4+ hour range) where running tangents is replaced by constantly trying to pass? I know I was stressed out when I did the Ascent my first time because I wasnt prepared for the constant stream of hikers.
(Matt C adds: This is good info for those who dont want to wait till the 29th for the first Club Elk run. Also send in whatever you want about running Pikes Peak. The more perspectives the better!)

Im sure by now youve seen or have heard about the great results by ICers in Sundays GOG 10 miler. Awesome results in most all categories. Kees (7th overall) and Connilee (5th F), as well as age division winners Anthony S, Ray E, Jack R, & Glen A. Not to mention award recipients Dave R, Ben C, Gina B and Vicki M. (Sorry if I missed anyone). Congratulations to everyone who ran!
The rest of us were treated to a beautiful day up and down Barr Trail, almost spoiled by the Kamikaze cyclist most of us encountered above or near no name creek. This rider was flying down Barr going about 30 mph way too fast at anytime but worse given the trail traffic out on a sunny, warm Sunday morning. Larry had an excellent suggestion and interesting application for a 2 x 4. That said, it couldnt diminish the abundant wild flowers, and the sound of water running in the creeks even above Barr Camp. All in all a pretty amazing Sunday for the Incline Club.

Call it stupidity or self sabotage. Call it what you like, just dont do this to yourself! After two weeks of no running, and two weeks of short runs (recovering from surgery), I did a hard run to the Bottomless Pit sign and back. I also pushed the down much harder than was reasonable.
The result: knee pain. Now I am easing back into short runs.
The lesson: just because I HAD a good base at one time, a long layoff does really set me back. And I should not push so hard on the down, since I am training for the Ascent and dont normally push the down.
(Matt C adds: I am tempted to add a duh! here but wont because I am a much bigger person than that;-)

I wanted to extend an invitation to fellow incline runners to join the high altitude - Kenyan running camp. What is the Kenyan running camp? Well it is a chance to spend a few days at altitude; running, biking, reading, napping, whatever.
For the past several years a group that includes Incliner Bob McAndrews, and myself have biked in to one of the 10th Mtn Huts, spent a few days at the hut (doing 2 or 3 a day workouts:-) and then biked out. This year there are three of us (so far) going to Margys Hut (outside of Aspen) for three nights beginning July 21st. The hut is at 11,300 feet. The bike ride in is about 10 miles on forest service roads. You can actually drive to the hut, but that would go against the Kenyan Running Camp tradition.
If you have not experienced the 10th Mtn Huts, they are a must do either for a backcountry ski/shoe adventure in the winter or for a bike/hike/run fun time in the summer. You can check out the 10th Mtn Hut system at http://www.huts.org/ and/or call for reservations at 970-925-5775. The rate is $26 a night.
Please feel free to contact Bob or me with questions about the Kenyan Running Camp.

Greetings ICers,
One could speculate that Neal Taylors Perpaunatural from last weeks report was possibly training for the Bare Buns Run"; a 5K held near Seattle in August. Dont ask me about the whole bib#/safety-pin thing cuz Ive never run it.(google on NW Runner; maybe they know). Duz add a whole new paradigm to the IC Motto, eh what?
Also: Ran into three nekid backpackers on the Melakwa Lake Trail yesterday. This is a time honored tradition in the soggy northwest where, I spoze, no one is faulted for maximizing UV intake. And for a real feat of endurance athleticism, check out the nude bicyclists at Seattles Freemont Days Parade. Freemont is a Seattle neighborhood inhabited by Old Hippies, Trotskyites, Norwegian Yuppies and a full assortment of Reagan Reprieved Lunatics.
Go out hard, when it hurts, have a latte

Race = Garden of the Gods 10 Mile
Location = Garden of the Gods
Date = 6/8/03
Distance = 10 miles
Goal = 65 minute race
Results = 65:40
General = For me, a tough, hilly, paved race that can really beat you up!
Right = It has been a long time since I ran this race, so I asked Matt and some others about pace for the race. The general consensus was to make sure not to go out too fast. I went out at a 6:10 first mile hoping to average a 6:30 by the end of the race. Holding back the first 2 miles really helped me set up for the rest of the race and I was able to hit my goal time.
Wrong = Nothing major.

Right = Rested well up to the race and felt ready to go!
Wrong = Maybe shouldnt of run with my leg somewhat injured, but well everybody understands why you go anyway.
Other Stuff = Lots of ICers running, supporting and winning!!

Race = GOG 10 Mile
Location = Col Springs, CO
Date = 6/8/2003
Distance = 10 Miles
Goal = 60:00
Results = 62:15, 16th overall
General = Hillier course than I expected.
Wrong = Shouldnt have run the Teva Mtn. Games Spring Runoff in Vail the day before. I think that cost me about 2 minutes.

Kelli Lusk reports:
Race = Northfield Mountain
Location = Northfield, MA
Date = June 7, 2003
Distance = 8.2 miles
Goal = Win!
Results = 1st
Website = http://www.coolrunning.com
General = This race was a part of the New England Trail Racing Series and also one of the qualification races for the US Mountain Running Team. There was only one automatic spot for the women and that spot was going to the winner. There were a few women running who had been on the team in the past, so I knew it was going to be a tough race. After I won, I was extremely happy because I met my goal of making the US Mountain Running Team this year (the competition is going to be in Alaska in mid-September). Yeah!
Right = Had decent rest the night before, had a solid taper the week leading up to the race, had run the course a month prior (so I knew what to expect) and put in a lot of miles in all winter and spring (with this race being one of my main focuses this year). I also stuck to my race strategy throughout the entire race, which ended up paying off in a strong finish.
Wrong = Theres not much complaining since I had a great race and I met my goals of winning and making the team.
Other Stuff = The course was well-marked and very rolling. The first loop included a little flat loop which warmed people up before hitting the first loop of climbing. The second part of the loop was a long decent and then around again for two loops and a total of 8.2 miles. This course was ideal for me, so I felt very comfortable on it. Overall, a well-organized and fun race.

Doug Laufer aka Rufus T Firefly reports:
Race = Mt Evans
Location = Mt Evans
Date = 6/1/1
Distance = 14.5 miles
Goal = run it
Results = ran it
General = Pete, Elisabeth and Valerie have already captured the details in their reports. Would just add that I am happy all runners got off the mountain without any problems. I have done a lot of mountain races and runs, have had a few adventures, this one is up there with the best of them. The run did cause me to reflect on another year I did Mt. Evans: I was living in AZ and came in for the race. Conditions at the top were cold and windy (but no blizzard) with wind chill was about 15 degrees. I went straight from the race to the airport, later that day I was in Phoenix and it was almost 100 degrees warmer...normally I prefer the conditions on the mountain top this year may have been an exception, but it was a great adventure!!
I want to note that one of the runners at Mt Evans was Mike Dunlap, who is the basketball coach at Metro State. Mike has completed the Western State 100, and has done amazing things with the basketball program at Metro. I admire Mikes work with student-athletes at Metro from afar, his approach is quite impressive and refreshing in this day of big time college sports.
Right = Showed up, carried a windbreaker, ear wrap, and two sets of gloves.
Wrong = No quality work, means no leg speed great to do long miles and have a base, but to improve have to do some hard running too.
Other Stuff = There was a day late 1970s, early 80s when Mt Evans was THE mountain race in the area. I think the race filled at 1200 runners; there were over 900 finishers each year. Then they lost their sponsor, the structure at the summit burned down, and for a many years the race was off the radar screen completely.

Gina Basile reports:
Race = Steamboat Springs Marathon
Location = Steamboat Springs CO
Date = 06/01
Distance = 26.2
Goal = Boston qualifier or whatever
Results = whatever 3:45:14
Website = http://www.marathonguide.com/results/browse.cfm?MIDD=1051030601
General = We just decided last minute to throw this marathon into our schedule, so the pressure was somewhat less than other races. The day started with alot of rain, but once I was wet, it really didnt matter. Overall, I felt strong right up until the last 3 miles. The course was beautiful.
Right = Enjoyed the race for the most part. Have trained pretty well so far this season except need to bring on the speedwork.
Wrong = May not have drank or had enough gel during the race. Took gel twice and finished with 3/4ths of my recovery drink left. Maybe why I struggled the last couple miles.
Other Stuff = Felt stronger this race than any previous marathon Ive done. Hopefully that is a sign of better days ahead. Harry and I both won third in our age group and got very cool running shirts:)

Race = Teva Mountain Games Spring Runoff
Location = Vail, CO
Date = 6/7/2003
Distance = 6.4 miles
Goal = To see how I compete against the best
Results = Got spanked
Website = http://www.vailrec.com
General = Went to Vail to run the selection race for the US mountain running team. I wanted to see how I did against the best. I think I was 42nd overall.
Right = I realized I am a really good downhill runner. I past a lot of people on the downhills
Wrong = However, all of those people passed me on the uphills. I really need to get better on the uphills
Other Stuff = Course was pretty muddy from the snow melt and the rain overnight

6/8/03 Sun: While about 40 ICers were running the Garden of The Gods 10 Miler another 46 came out for some running on Pikes Peak. It was a perfect weather day for training or racing and either way you would have been a fool to sleep in today!
6/5/03 Thur: 52 timed the weather perfectly and missed about 12 hours worth of rain. While todays protocol was 30 mins of 1 min hard, 1 min easy many in the group did a shorter 10 minute version to taper for weekend races including the Garden of the Gods 10 mile. Those people also got to skip most of the Hydro Street hill repeats as well.
6/5/03 Orders are now being taken for club shirts. Orders must be in and paid for my June 22nd to get put on the list.
