Hi there ICers,
Looks like my weather forecasting last week was terrible. We ended up with perfect running conditions and the snow I was predicting came later that night. Oh well, I can be a little more certain about this: This Sunday will be pretty much the shortest day of the year. From Sunday (Monday a.m. actually) the days start to get longer again:-) If you want to see for yourself just head here: http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneYear.html
Last Sunday several of us ended our runs right around 2 hours. It was a pleasant surprise to see so many cars still in the parking lot! In years past it seemed that many people were not out there for very long and those of us running 2 or more hours were coming back to empty lots. Well done everyone and keep it up!
See you Sunday:-)
PS A lot of R reports come through these pages. In Kitas things done wrong section below you will find something to hang on your refrigerator its now on mine...

NEXT RUN:
###############################################
Sunday, Dec. 21, 8:00am Memorial Park
Head out the Ute Pass Trail until it intersects Longs Ranch Road. Take TWO lefts and head UP Longs Ranch Road. Try to smile when you hit Poppa Bear Hill;-) Connect back into the Barr Trail at No Name Creek and run back down to Memorial Park. Take the J Pipe trail before the top of LRR for a shorter run. Add Bobs Road on the way to No Name for a longer run. Http://www.inclineclub.com/maps/upt_lrr_bt.htm
Notes: This will be the last solo LRR loop! Next time we head up LRR it will be after we do Waldo:-O

Now this would be my version of the worst bathroom story! Someone suggested I should forward this onto you. I apologize if you find it too off color, but it somehow seemed fitting for the club.
(Matt C adds: For those that have not done an Incline Club about me page there is a question about your worst bathroom experience. At any rate, while I did recently learn from a childrens book that everybody poops just to be safe I will put a PG 13 rating on this photo: http://www.inclineclub.com/photos/notalone.jpg)

R REPORTS:

Kita Alvares reports:
Race = USATF Junior Olympics Cross Country National Championship
Location = Albuquerque, New Mexico
Date = 12/13/03
Distance = 3K
Goal = To finish in the top 25 and receive All American recognition
Results = 134/320
Website = http://www.usatf.org/events/2003/USATFJuniorOlympicXCChampionships/
General = What an awesome experience to get to race with other girls from all over America. The race was entirely on grass and was very hard. The course was crowded and the competition was fierce.
Right = Qualified to be in this race by finishing 6th the State of Colorado and 15th in the region.
Wrong = Didnt train enough. Next year, Ill train more and harder.

Karl Schab
Race = Anthem Holiday Classic Candy Cane 10K
Location = Anthem, AZ (north of Phoenix)
Date = 12/13/03
Distance = 10K
Goal = sub-54:00
Results = 51:35 (PR)
Website = http://www.3disciplines.com/anthem.html
General = Fun run with ChampionChip timing! Anthem is a master-planned community with wide concrete running paths, and beautiful desert vistas. The race started at sunset, and we were treated to an awesome display of reds and violets as the sun slowly retreated. Oh, yes, there was a good race too. Small field, maybe 100 people.
Right = Just about everything! Good measured pace through the first three miles. Then I started reeling people in. Each time I passed someone I felt even more energy, and Id just go after the next one. For the first time in a 10K, NOBODY passed me in the second half! (maybe I went out too slow?) I realized I was in PR territory--my best previous 10K was 51:50--and that really helped. Also, the course went in two loops, and each started downhill and finished uphill. Its too early to credit IC training for making the hills easier, but they were nothing like OUR hills.
Wrong = Got to the venue very late and was dashing around with my hair on fire to get ready to run. I guess that constituted a warm-up.
Other Stuff = Seemed like we were running on a movie set. The lake smelled of pool-liner vinyl and chlorine. People there were talking about how nice it was to get out into nature. I just smiled.

NON R REPORTS: (Race cant be first club run)

Dan Corbett reports:
Race = Lehigh University Turkey Trot
Location = South Mountain Bethlehem, PA
Date = Nov. 20th
Distance = 5K
Goal = Finish
Results = 19:43
General = This is just a fun little race they enjoy holding at Lehigh every year. The cross country kids always kick my butt, its still fun though. The race is run through the fraternities on campus so you get the added excitement of dodging half empty beer cans being launched at you.
Right = Playing hockey and running on and off all of the semester, kept in decent shape. Not that I was really training to run.
Wrong = Made a $50.00 bet with a friend who said that I couldnt run the race drunk and finish under 20 minutes. I won the bet, but I would strongly advise anyone against running downhill intoxicated. Its rather difficult to keep your balance while trying to move at a good clip, truly shocking.
Other Stuff = I managed to dodge all but one of the beer cans being thrown at me during the race, which has been my best performance in that aspect so far. Ive also learned that alcohol and running dont mix. For some reason or other I didnt feel so hot after the race. And I miss running in real mountains, anyone want to hire a mechanical engineer fulltime next summer?

12/14/03 Sun: Another huge group (97) took off for the Waldo Canyon loop. The weather today was far better than expected and in fact it was downright awesome. There was also not as much ice as was feared. Great to see so many cars still in the park after two hours which must mean a lot more people are going for longer runs this year:-)
