Howdy ICers,
Here is hoping Santa brought you some really cool stuff:-)
On Christmas Eve I ran up the you know what and then continued on up the J pipe trail and finally up the last part of Longs Ranch Road. I peaked out at the top of LRR at 4:54pm and I have to tell you the sunset stopped me in my tracks!
The ICs SkyCam takes a photo every 10 minutes so it missed the perfect shot by 5 minutes. However you can get an idea from the photo from the 24th here: http://www.inclineclub.com/cam/favorites6.htm.
At any rate, I was thinking WOW! Do we live in an awesome place:-)
Happy Holidays everyone and see you Sunday!!!
(PS If you want to try a sunset loop like I did dont do like I did and go without a flashlight. By the time I got to No Name it was pretty much dark and by the time I got to the Ws it was black. Of course this was kind of fun in a crazy sort of way as well:-)

NEXT RUN:
###############################################
Sunday, Dec. 28, 8:00am Memorial Park
(The last long run for 2003!!!)
Head out the Ute Pass Trail until it intersects Longs Ranch Road. Take a right and head down to Hwy 24. Cross Hwy 24 and do Waldo Canyon in the clockwise direction (less ice). 2-3.5 hours, if it would be longer do an out/back or the Bail Trail. http://www.inclineclub.com/maps.htm
Note: This is the last solo run of Waldo. Next time we do Waldo in a couple of weeks we will follow it up with Longs Ranch Road.

The Rescue Run 5K/10K races are on New Years Day. Please consider participating in this event. All proceeds from the event go to the El Paso County Search and Rescue. These are the folks that provide search and mountain rescue services in El Paso County and other parts of the state. They are also the ones out there during blizzards or floods, helping to rescue stranded motorists. If any of us are ever seriously hurt on one of our Sunday long runs, the Search and Rescue folks would be the ones called upon to help.
The El Paso County Search and Rescue also supports the local running community. They have provided on-course medical and communications support for the following events in 2003. PPRR Winter Series, Summer Roundup Trail Run, Barr Trail Mountain Race, Pikes Peak Ascent, Pikes Peak Marathon, and American Discovery Trail Marathon.
Thus this is your chance to give back to the organization that gives so much to the local running community specifically, and the overall community in general.
The races are at Palmer Park in Colorado Springs on January 1st at 10:00 am. You can register at any of the local running stores or online at active.com. If you cant run but still want to help out, please let me know (e-mail address removed from www posting to prevent spam). I still need a few more volunteers for water stops.
Thanks and Happy New Year to all of you.

R REPORTS:
###############################################
Craig Hess reports:
Lets just say the news of Saddams capture did far more for me than the Honolulu Marathon on Sunday. And if the few Caucasian supporters along the route hadnt showed up, youd swear you were running somewhere in Japan. The 31st running of Honolulu had about 24,000 runners of which 16,000 were Japanese. No wonder Japan Airlines is such a proud sponsor of this event. They must have had a decent pyrotechnics budget as we had some good fireworks at the start line. And as soon as I overcame my fear of sushi being served at the aid stations I was able to hold a steady but slow pace. Finished at 3:45. Very hot day. Running a mile in the tropics never really appealed to me. Running a marathon in the tropics just lowered the appeal by some factor of about 26.2.
Ran out of things to say about this run. Honolulu was marathon #37 but I still have 25 states to go. No running until 1 Feb to give the ankle a break. I hope 2004 is a great year for you; your non-running life included. Basic course info below.
Aloha,
Craig
Honolulu Marathon 14 Dec 03
Entry Fee $90-120 ($15 for on-island military)
Link http://honolulumarathon.com
Course Basically starting a mile west of Waikiki, head west toward the Aloha tower circling back through Waikiki, then around Diamond Head, east toward Hawaii Kai and back to finish in Kapiolani Park. A very flat course with the exception of some small hills around Diamond Head. Expo Horrible.
Goodie Bag None.
Medal Average but on a string of puka shells instead of traditional cloth material.
T-Shirt Average.
Crowds Not many but all the Japanese banners along the way were pretty cool. Good water/Gatorade support along the way.
Start temp Ugly. 75 degrees and sweating like a pig at 0500 before we even started. Temperature rose to at least 85 and our friend Mr. Humidity was there for the entire event.
Overall impression Over-rated and expensive. I cant vouch for the other marathons on the other islands, but unless youre dead set on vacationing on Oahu, Id almost gamble and give the other marathons a shot over Honolulu. Honolulu just didnt seem to have much atmosphere going for it considering it is the sixth largest marathon in the world. But the Japanese sure seem to think its the greatest event on earth.

12/21/03 Sun: With the holidays upon us only 91 headed out Ute Pass Trail for the last solo run of LRR. It felt a little more like winter today because it was coated in snow! It was also cold and windy up on top. However quite a few managed to finish the loop for their first time ever. The Barr Trail only had a few slick spots on it for our trip down.

Go out hard, when it hurts speed up...
