Howdy IC(E)rs!
Watch for ICE on the trails the next week or so. The warm days are turning last weeks snow to slush which then freezes at night. Lots of ice out there especially on the Ws of the Barr Trail or any trail that sees lots of use! It could be a good time to get out your screw shoes: http://www.skyrunner.com/screwshoe.htm

NEXT RUN:
###############################################
Sunday, Jan. 11, 8:00am Memorial Park
Run out the UPT and take a right and head over to do the Waldo Canyon loop in the clockwise direction (it is safer running ice on the way up). Then do Longs Ranch Road taking the J-pipe short-cut. 2.5-3.5 hours, if it would be longer do just one of the two. See maps - http://www.inclineclub.com/maps.htm
Note: Bring water and food unless you want to die and become food for the rest of us. Nothing like fresh meat with no chance of BSE :-p

Could you include the following in your weekly newsletter? Thanks!
*****Volunteers Wanted******
Its cold, its been snowing....it must be Winter Series time! This is the 25th anniversary of the event. We are having a lot of entries come in which is great to see. Since so many people are participating in the event, we have been left short on volunteers. If anyone can volunteer, even if its just one event, we could certainly use the help. The first event on Jan 10th seems to be covered. Its the last 3 on 1/24, 2/14 and 2/28 that need some assistance. The more difficult tasks have mostly been covered. We are looking for aid station volunteers and a few miscellaneous volunteers for tasks that always seem to come up. If you can help us out, please email the race director, Pat Lockhart (e-mail address removed from www posting to prevent spam). You can also leave her a message at 598-2953. If you have any questions, please let Pat or I know. Thanks!!!

Race = Fat Ass 50K
Location = Missouri Headwaters State Park, Montana
Date = January 3, 2004
Distance = 50K
Goal = Run at least 4 of the 5K laps
Results = Ran 4 laps
Website = http://www.runmt.com/bswd.html (No race info at time of post)
General = This race is about as low-key as it gets no entry fee, no support, and self-timing! About 12 hardy people showed up for this inaugural event. Lynn and I were just looking to get in some miles in prep for running the Motorola Marathon (Lynn) and Half-Marathon (me) next month. The park is very quiet this time of year I spied a bald eagle and heard several flocks of geese honking overhead during the run. It was quite chilly minus 7 at the start, and only 1 by the time we finished. It wasnt bad on the out part of the course, but on the back part, the wind was in our faces, and it stung! After the second lap, I had to stuff an extra sock down my shorts, because the wind was cutting through my pants and shorts not a comfortable feeling! :-O After each 5K lap, Id grab a sip of hot cocoa from the car, and adjust my clothing layers. At 20K, I felt a blister coming on and got some intestinal cramping (probably from the cocoa), and sto pped. Lynn finished 30K, while I drove around to see the park (this is where the Madison, Gallatin, and Jefferson Rivers meet to form the Missouri).
Right = Brought plenty of warm clothes to deal with the cold and wind. Brought along some hot drinks for between-lap refreshment. Stopped before getting injured.
Wrong = Drinking all the cocoa might have given me the stomach cramps, but it was probably still worth drinking for the warmth!
Other Stuff = Course was an absolutely flat out-and-back. If Id tried the whole 50K, I think it would have been tough without some elevation variation to break the monotony.

General = Race was run on paved roads, dirt roads, and trails in Palmer Park. Very hilly course with great views of the city and foothills. Great weather.
Right = Paced myself well. Stayed strong on the uphills and pushed it on the downhills.
Wrong = Should have gone to bed earlier the night before.

Race = Training Run with Las Vegas Track Club
Location = Henderson, NV
Date = 12/28/03
Distance = 10 miles
Goal =
Results = 1:39
Website = http://www.lvtc.org/training.htm
General = Couldnt find a race in Las Vegas the weekend between Christmas and New Years, so I contacted Carl Wright (his info is on the Las Vegas Track Club web site) and ran a nice 10 mile run with Carl and a couple of other friendly folks during my annual visit with my father. These guys could be ICers; they run up a pretty good hill (for in-town running) and it was not just a flatland run. If youre ever in Vegas, they have something going on almost every day, and the have a very visitor-friendly web-site (not as good as the IC site, though). Carls dog, and his daughters dog, set the pace.

1/4/2004 Sun: Brrrrrr!!! OK, never again will I call 20 degrees (last week) cold! When we headed off at 8 a.m. it was only 8 degrees. Fortunately, during the run the sun was shining and by the time we were done at least one thermometer was reading a whopping 10 degrees. Although it was one of our smallest groups in a long time, the 64 who showed were amply rewarded! As we headed up Rampart Range Road we were treated to some awesome views of yesterdays big snow storm. (Photo: http://www.inclineclub.com/photos/peak010404.jpg) We were also the first tracks in Williams Canyon, the Bail Trail and much to our pleasant surprise, most of Waldo. Williams was just awesome and eerily quite because even the gun crowd was not out at the shooting range thanks to the bitter cold. All and all a great way to start off the new year! On another note, and just to show how consistent the group is this year, one of the three runners that broke their perfect
run streak today dropped 41 places on the * board!
