Hi there ICers,

Many thanks to those of you who dropped your holiday trees off at the Barr Trail trailhead. I actually saw Howard Brooks and Bob McAndrews doing just that. All the trees were effectively used to block off shortcuts people were taking on some of the lower switchbacks.

I read an interesting paragraph (well, actually the whole article was interesting) in Irish Runner about Paula Radcliffe’s success, including her world best marathon of 2:15:25. It said the most obvious point to her success is that when she started running she joined a club. “They loved the camaraderie of the club, and in ways we have lost that club focus, where you come to training and join with a group. Enjoyment is the fist principle of sport. Take the fun out of it and it is work.” I know for myself running with the IC makes running a lot more fun. For me running with a club has always meant that even if you are not running with someone others are out there with you going through the same thing. That can be powerful incentive when the going gets tuff. Of course the last couple of years the IC has been big enough that most everyone can find someone to run with which is even better:-)

See you Sunday!

NEXT RUN:
###############################################
Sunday, Jan. 18, 8:00am — Memorial Park
Run out El Paso Blvd and turn right before Hwy 24. Take the dirt shortcut to Crystal Park Rd. Run Intemann Trail until it connects with Section 16. Head right and run that until taking a left down High Drive to connect back to Section 16. Finish the loop and return via Manitou Avenue. 2-3.5 hours. http://www.inclineclub.com/maps/section16.htm

Note: I suspect that the first couple of switchbacks of Intemann are fairly icy. However past runs have shown that if you can get through them it is usually pretty good going from there on.

I have a question. I’m going to run the Alaska Marathon in June do you know of a good place to stay? I wanted to know if you or one of your friends knew of a good place to stay that is close to the finish line?

I recently purchased a Windows XP Home Edition and found out it wasn’t compatible with my computer and now I am stuck with a $100 CD that is useless to me. I want to sell it and am willing to sell at $80, seeing how anyone can go and buy it for regular price. They can contact me @ 338-8712 or see me on Sundays @ IC.

Race = PF Chang Rock and Roll Marathon
Location = Phoenix, AR
Date = Jan 11, 2004
Distance = marathon
Goal =
Results = 3:14
Website = http://www.rnraz.com/

General = Fantastic race for an inaugural marathon. This race had nearly 30,000 runners in the various races...most of them ran the half marathon.

I knew I wasn’t in shape to run a marathon so I started off conservatively, my only goal to finish comfortably. I don’t know if was running too fast or maybe too slow!! Anyway after running the first half in 1:25 (as slow as I’ve ever run the first half of a marathon) my legs felt like lead. By mile 19 I had completely collapsed to an 8:30 mile. I persevered though for my 54th marathon finish and my 25th US state.

Right = Started off slow.

Wrong = Hiked four hours in the desert the day before the race without water.

Other Stuff = Flat and fast... the winning time was 2:10, but there was a stiff wind on much of the course. Without the wind 2:07 would have been the winning time.

The course had some 15 or so live band playing on the course. Fantastic! The drummer of the Goo Goo Dolls, who is an ultramarathoner, ran the marathon stopping to play a song with each band! The Goo Goo Dolls were the feature band playing at the post-race party as well!! Great race and highly recommended.

Race = Disney World Marathon
Location = Orlando, FL
Date = 1/11/2004
Distance = 26.2M
Goal = Get The State
Results = 3:04:14

General = Went to Disney on a working vacation. We had meetings for the Running Network (who is a sponsor of the event). Decided that since I did not have FL yet, I should do the race.

Right =
Wrong =

Other Stuff = I expected the course to be better than it was. Of the 26 miles, only about 5 of them are through the actual parks. The rest are on the roads connecting the park, so it is very boring. Race starts early (6 AM) and you have to be on the buses by 4 AM :-(
24 states down, 26 to go!

Race = Avalon 50
Location = Catalina Isalnd, CA
Date = 1/10/04
Distance = 50 miles
Goal = finish
Results = 10 hours, 55 minutes
Website = http://avalon50.com

General = Avalon 50 is run about 26 miles off the coast of Long Beach on the very hilly island of Catalina.

Right = Ate earlier than normal the night before the race, so I wouldn’t have as many bathroom problems later in the race. Practiced on downhill running months before the race. No quad pain! Just the knees hurt bad.

Wrong = Should have carried two water bottles. I had a 45 ounce waist pack, but it became very uncomfortable, so I switched to one bottle. Normally on a flatter course, this wouldn’t be a problem, but some of those climbs lasted two miles, so it took more out of you. I also took a vivarin at 38 miles. Bad idea. My stomach hurt so bad I couldn’t wear anything around my waist for the rest of the race, and had to carry it.

Other Stuff = Lots of buffalo to see, hummingbirds, and if your lucky, bald eagles. The finishers medals were really nice.

1/11/2004 Sun: Ah, the Waldo/LRR double! 79 showed today and for many there were some tough times ahead. LRR was a mess of crusty snow. Fortunately we at least has some great weather. Quite a few made the double loop. Quite a few others made one or the other loops for the first time this year as well. Yes, its hard work, but progress is progress:-)
