Subject: Incline Club V8 LR #9
Hi ICers,
Have you noticed it? We have already picked up over a half hour (34 mins) of extra daylight since last month! For those that do any running in the evening it has been a real bonus because most of the minutes have been added at the end of the day. In addition, we have also turned the corner on temperature averages as well. Sure, there are lots of cold days left but on the average things are looking up:-)

I have heard a few comments about some of our runs being a little long. I can only say that most of the races we are training for are, well, long! However from a newbie perspective I can see how if you are just starting out being faced with a Waldo/LRR double could be a bit overwhelming;-) Here are what some of the veterans do when they need to back off of a prescribed run:
For the Waldo/LRR double:
- Do Waldo and take the Bail Trail. This one is a popular option!
- Do just Waldo or just LRR. Many feel that although LRR is steeper overall it is an easier loop than Waldo because they dont have to contend with Ute on the way back.
- After you check in drive up to Waldo and run just the Waldo loop.
For the Section 16 run:
- After you check in drive up to the Intemann trailhead. This could turn what for some would mostly be an out/back on roads into a loop on trails. This could also save those diehards that think that any road running is tantamount to blasphemy.
For Rampart Range Road/Waldo/Ute:
- Take Williams all the way down and dont go up to Waldo. This makes this one of our easiest runs. In fact, I did this myself quite a bit last year as a way to recover from the demands of the other two runs while I was trying to heal an injury.
For any run:
- Do another run. Some of our runs are harder than others and doing all of an easier run may be better than doing part of a harder run. Some start with the club for example and then head into the GOG or up the Barr Trail.
- Take a detour. There are plenty of trails we run by that offer some great exploring. A few weeks back a couple of runners headed off on one of the trails off of Ute and found some old cabin remains. They also found a benchmark from 1937! Exploring is a great way to recharge the batteries!!!
Now just because I have listed some options for making the runs shorter does NOT mean I think our runs our too long! In fact, if you are shooting for the PPM I would argue that the prescribed runs we do are more of a minimum. However for all of us, newbies and oldbies alike, there are days when the prescribed run just might not be in the cards. Hopefully some of these options will save the day:-)
See you Sunday!

NEXT RUN:
###############################################
Sunday, Jan. 25, 8:00am Memorial Park
Head out El Paso and take a left after hwy 24 into the GOG. Run up Rampart Range Road to just past the antenna. Head down Williams Canyon one mile and take the right up to Waldo and head back to the park via UPT. 2.5-4.0 hours. Shorter option is to head all the way down Williams. http://www.inclineclub.com/maps.htm

1/18/2004 Sun: 78 came out for the first Section 16 run of the year. The cold air quickly warmed up to the 40s after the sun came out and Section 16 was in awesome shape. Several that had never done the trail before stated that they really liked it! Especially the long gentle downhill on the backside.
