Hi there ICers,
As I write this I can hear the sound of aluminum bats hitting baseballs. Not much of a baseball fan but I do know that when the Manitou Springs Mustangs start baseball practice Spring is just around the corner. Either that or they really started early this year...
As always watch for ice out there! I have heard from several during the week that things are really a mess out there.
See you Sunday!

NEXT RUN:

Sunday, Feb. 22, 8:00am Memorial Park
Run out the UPT and take a right and head over to do the Waldo Canyon loop in the clockwise direction (it is safer running ice on the way up). Then do Longs Ranch Road taking the J-pipe short-cut. 2.5-3.5 hours, if it would be longer do just one of the two.
NOTE: This may be changed to Rampart Range Road depending on the ice reports I get. It is that time of year (lots of thaw/freeze cycles) and why we started running RRR in the first place to avoid ice!

Beth Darnell, a US Skyrunner and a John Hopkins post doctorate student, will be traveling from Baltimore to run the Pikes Peak Marathon in August. She will have her own transportation, but has a need for hospitality during her stay. If you would be willing to house her for a few nights during the Pikes Peak festivities please phone her at (number removed from www posting) or mail her at (e-mail address removed from www posting to prevent spam).
See ya in August. Best Regards, Jonathan

Dear ICers,
I am fortunate to be doing some trail running with a true expert on the subject of large cats, Deng Lual, a Dinka from the Sudan who walked 1600 miles through serious cat country as a war refugee (re. lost boy). He says that if you encounter a lion and kill it with a spear you get a really cool tattoo. Kill it with your bare hands and you get a cool knife scar on your shoulder plus the tattoo. Otherwise you might consider purchasing a chrome spike dog collar at your local Pets-mart to discourage those pesky spine severing cat bites (accessories with a Nine Inch Nails CD for the Sport Discman and some black eye shadow). I will also offer this prayer we used to say before our fishing excursions in Montana grizzly country: Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil, for I am the meanest, nastiest critter in the valley. Go out hard, when it bites, bite back.

R REPORTS:
###############################################
Curt Krieger reports:
Race = New World Snowshoe Championship
Location = Luck, Wisconsin
Date = February 14, 2004
Distance = 10K is the national qualifier (5K and 20K distances also available)
Goal = Finish top 10 overall; Qualify for nationals: shoot for around 55 minutes
Results = 5th overall; 1st in age category; time of 47:30
Website = http://home.centurytel.net/luckrunningclub (info) or www.myvira.com (results)
General = Part ski trail and part golf course, the groomed race route has been described as the most beautiful in the Midwest (by Midwesterners?). Rolling hills and the winding trail make for a challenging snowshoe course. Also beautiful scenery along the river valleys on the drive to the race!
The race is one of the regional qualifiers for the USSSA National Race, this year in Squaw Valley, CA.
Right = Able to train for many more days this year due to better snow conditions. Included short, difficult days in deep snow as well as longer, faster days on groomed trails.
Ran the initial section harder than I planned to average in order to get in a better position with fresher snow for solid foot plants. It didnt take much to break the snow up into loose, grainy stuff that caused more slipping and off-balance running.
Wrong = Lost some concentration and let my mind offer some issues during the last section of the course. The leading runner from the 20K race pulled beside me and helped coach me back into better form!!
Other Stuff = Im having a blast in recent (Iowa)winters by getting out more often on snowshoes. The running is slower and often more difficult than running roads but it provides a much better overall workout in a short period of time and more closely simulates trail running during a season when the trails are nearly impossible for regular running shoes.

Karl Schab reports:
Race = USS Frank Cable Valentines Day 5 K
Location = US Naval Base, Guam
Date = 13 Feb 04
Distance = 5 K
Goal = sub-27
Results = 26:36
General = Running atop the worlds tallest mountain (measured from its base 39,000 feet underwater) at 6 am, temperature 80 degrees, humidity 98 percent. About 60 sailors and their family members (and several Army gate crashers--not surprisingly, no Air Force at that hour) came out for an out-and-back 5K on Big Navy sponsored by the USS Frank Cable, my home for two weeks of reserve duty. I had two goals going into this race: the first 100 finishers got T-shirts and I wanted to get one, and I wanted to at least run 9:00 miles. Ive done 10 Ks on sub-nines, but not in tropical conditions. Well, the low turnout guaranteed the T-shirt, but the pace was not easy. I got my sub-nines, but took most of the morning to cool down, which didnt do anything for my uniform. A Navy SEAL won the race. He didnt let the two Army guys pass him. They took 2nd and 3rd. I was 25th out of 60, not too bad considering I was probably the oldest guy there.
Right = Prepared well by running in mid-day heat several times in the two weeks preceding the race, so I knew what I was up against. Ate and drank responsibly (not always easy while playing sailor) the night before the race. Got to the race in plenty of time, and had a good stretch and warm up before the race started.
Wrong = Could have maybe run faster in the first half. Ran a much faster second half. This was my first 5 K, and I only have race experience at 10 K and longer, so I really didnt have a clue about pace. Should have tried a pacing run a week before.
Other Stuff = I can refer anyone interested to a Navy Reserve Recruiter.

2/15/2004 Sun: The holiday weekend left 64 runners for a trip up Rampart Range Road which was in perfect condition. Then the plan was to either head all the way down Williams or head up to Waldo and return via the Ute Pass Trail. Even the weather was a welcome change after several solid weeks of nothing but cold. That alone made it a great day!
