I will be moving to London for at least the next three months - possibly much longer. Does anyone have any suggestions for running clubs in the UK?

Brenda Willis Ultra 100
###############################################
The Brenda Willis Ultra 100 is underway! As you may know Brenda is on a quest to loose 100lbs by the Incline Club annual party and raise money for the Arc. She weighed in last Sunday at 307.5lbs. In the first week alone she has picked up $25.125 worth of pledges per pound! If she accomplishes her goal that will be $2,512.50 - mostly due to ICers!!! But that is NOT all. The Arc has come up with a matching grant for the Brenda Ultra 100 so everything that she gets pledged will be DOUBLED. In other words, she has already picked up over $5,000 in pledges! WAY TO GO ICers:-)

R REPORTS:

Sandra Powell reports:
Race = Bataan Death March
Location = White Sands Missile Range, NM
Date = 3/21/04
Distance = marathon
Goal = finish as a team uninjured
Results = won our division
Website = http://www.bataanmarch.com
General = The Bataan Death March is a marathon through the desert of New Mexico to commemorate the soldiers in WWII that were left in the Philippines. The run is limited to 4000 people, and consists of about 2/3 military personnel and 1/3 civilians. People may complete the marathon as an individual or a team (five members running the whole distance). Usually hot and windy weather, but the esprit de corps is worth it! For the real masochists, you can compete in the heavy division with a 35-pound pack. Military teams must do the march in their uniform, including boots!
Right = We stayed well hydrated. There is great support along the route. We also had lots of electrolytes among us, as well as suntan lotion. Also remembered my gaiters, as most of this run is in sand.
Wrong = Need darker lenses for my sunglasses. The light colored sand reflected a lot of light that a cap wont keep out. It was almost like running in snow in a couple places.
Other Stuff = Lots of rolling hills, and probably only 1500 elevation climb. A mile long deep sand pit at about mile 21 really sucks the energy out of you. But getting together afterwards and hearing the stories from the real Bataan survivors really makes this all worthwhile and leaves you with a lump in your throat.

Race = Big Stairclimb for Leukemia
Location = Seattle WA -Bankamerica Tower (tallest building on left coast)
Date = 3-21-04
Goal = dont get passed by girls
Result = Whoa, close but achieved goal
Right= Great outfit, good color scheme went well with ankle chip bracelet accessory; got SOOO checked out. (have resolved this year to focus on the really important things and not just race results).
Wrong = Could have called out order for a double tall raspberry breve latte while passing Tullys Coffee during escalator ride with 9:30 start queue. Would have been perfect drinking temp by the time I got back from the top (floor 73) faux pas.
Other Stuff = I was exactly 2 seconds slower this year which means that at this rate when Im 145 in 90 years it will take me almost 15 minutes to climb 69 flights of stairs. After some soul searching I think I can honestly say that I am cool with this, particularly since having a post race biophotonic carotenoid (antioxidant) scan in the tower atrium after the race. My score was over twice the national average plus having actually been a free radical in the 60s, I found the whole procedure fascinating. I also note, with some degree of irony, that some of you were slogging through the rain and mud in Arizona while I was completely dry in Seattle. But the event, from basement parking, sign in, start and finish of the Big Stairclimb for Leukemia was entirely indoors. Oh, and the Starbucks was also open right by the sign in. Could have ordered a triple grande vanilla rice milk cappuccino there also but just completely spaced it.
PS have warned Ms. Rosa about dangers of dressing big cats like me in bunny suits.

Michael Hagen reports:
Race = Peuerbach Sylvesterlauf
Location = Peuerbach Austria
Date = 12/31/03 (better late than never)
Distance = 6.8k in 8 criterium-style laps around the city center
Goal = Earn a good party New Years (Sylvester) Eve
Results = I partied! (22:46)
Website = http://www.silvesterlauf.at/
General = Peuerbach is a small village in the middle of nowhere Austria, yet this was a big race. Some 1000 people in several heats, a bunch of kids races and a very competitive pro field. (Could ample prize money have something to do with that?) Marching bands, raffles, crowd barriers covered with advertising, the whole works.
Right = Ran just fast enough to get 2nd place in my age group and win a really cool felt cap that was just the thing to wear to the parties that night!
Wrong = It was snowing, about 1 Celsius, maybe 34 Fahrenheit. I wore SportHill style tights. But the roads were wet. A few minutes into the race and I was effectively wearing ankle weights, which I will use as the excuse for letting the guy who I just knew (and I was right) was my age-group competitor pass me in the last 100 meters.
Other Stuff = The race used timing chips that were basically some fancy wiring laminated onto the back of the race numbers, called bib chips. Instead of running over mats, we ran through gates of vertical chip detectors, kind of like airport metal detectors. It worked perfectly, although there was a bit of maneuvering to get through the gates. Results were instantaneous. The technology must be relatively cheap, because the bib chips arent reused.

3/21/2004 Sun: A fine spring day brought out our largest group in a month 81. As a celebration of spring we changed the workout to a run to Barr Camp and back. There were just 6 steps in snow all the way to No Name Creek. From there the snow is packed and well traveled and melting fast. Before the run Brenda Willis checked in for her official weigh-in. Her plan is to loose 100lbs by the Incline Club annual party to be held August 26th. Today she weighed 307.5lbs. She is taking pledges to raise money for Arc. Details can be found in here: http://www.inclineclub.com/newsletter/2004/lr17.htm.
