Subject: Incline Club V9 LR #7

Hi ICers,

If you have not heard or did not see the S&R personal, we had an ICer break an elbow on the Barr Trail last week. She fell near the Incline Overlook on the way back down. She did not have screw shoes and she was not dressed for the cold (or at least dressed for the slow down that occurred after she got hurt). Please remember that this time of year ice is just a part of trail running. I can honestly say that screw shoes make all the difference in the world! I personally had a blast last week coming down and in fact felt more in control on the ice down low than in some of the snow up high. When I did the run 3 weeks ago without screw shoes it sucked and I almost fell 7-8 times!

As far a clothing goes, while it is true that you may not fall and break and arm just ask yourself if you are prepared in the event you bonk or even more probable the weather turns bad as it often does. Bottom line, we are out there a long time and could be out there longer than planned so we need to be prepared! BE SMART and BE SAFE!

Next, and on an even sadder note, 1998 and 1999 Pikes Peak Ascent winner, Jeremy Wright, was killed near Kabul, Afghanistan last Sunday. I can honestly say that Jeremy was not just a great runner but a great person who had a lot of integrity! You can find quite a few stories on Jeremy by doing a Google *news* search. Here is just a sample to highlight what a special person he was:

In one article it was stated that Jeremy had been in recent contact with his friends and family before he was killed. I hope that each of you can say the same about your close ones because it does not have to be a war that takes our lives. Even a trip to the grocery store can end up being one way. Let people know how you feel about them!

See you Sunday! Holly fast moving clocks Batman, that’s tomorrow! And oh my, IT’S THE WALDO/LRR DOUBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NEXT RUNs:
###############################################
Sunday, Jan 9, 8:00am — Memorial Park
Run out the UPT and take a right and head over to do the Waldo Canyon loop in the clockwise direction. Head all the way up LRR and return via the Barr Trail. 2.5-4 hours, if it would be longer skip the LRR.

Sunday, Jan 16, 8:00am — Memorial Park
Run out El Paso Blvd and turn right before Hwy 24. Take the dirt shortcut to Crystal Park Rd. Run Intemann Trail until it connects with Section 16. Head right and run that until taking a left down High Drive to connect back to Section 16. Finish the loop and return via Manitou Avenue. 2-3.5 hours.

FYI, Some of the Incline Club members expressed an interest for information on a race in Monument (okay it’s just over the hill in Douglas County). You can pick your distance (12.5K 25K 37.5K and 50K) because it’s run on a 12.5K loop. There is even a small cemetery (very old) near the top of the 500ft climb. Good views and very runable. The CRUD website has a good map of these trails. Here are the links

R REPORTS:
###############################################
Joel Jenkins reports:
Race = Honolulu Marathon
Location = Honolulu, HI
Date = 13 Dec 04
Distance = 26.2
Goal = Finish
Results = finished
Website = http://honolulumarathon.com

General = Although I have been VERY bad about submitting race reports when I saw Craig Hess’ report I thought I might add my 2 cents. I agree with everything he said about the course, the expense, etc. It doesn’t offer much in the way of “personality” that’s for sure. It was my first road marathon and now I know why... it’s just not the same.

Right = Diet, shoes, arriving early enough to settle down before the race, etc.

Wrong = training plan. Shouldn’t train for Honolulu Marathon on the trails of Tantalus. Grabbed the Amino Value cup without realizing how nasty it tastes.

Other Stuff = Japan Airlines books three flights a day for a week and a half prior to the marathon just for marathon runners. I guess it’s one of the few marathons with no cut off times so if it takes you 12-14 hours so be it (and it did take that long for some runners). Because of this, you can go home successful in completing your marathon and not lose face with family and friends. The amino stuff Craig talked about is Amino Value. It is a thick, very salty, mango/orange flavored drink and when served warm (as it was) sits like a salt lick in your stomach. This gave me new meaning to the word nausea. Oh well, I can now say I’ve done the Honolulu Marathon, yippee, back to the trail. I’ll be more vigilant sending “R” reports from the Hawaii Ultra Running Team runs (HURT, get it? :-) ).

Gary Hellenga reports:
Race = California International Marathon
Location = Sacramento, California
Date = December 5, 2004
Distance = 26.2
Goal = Sub 3:20
Results = 3:27
Website = http://www.runcim.org

General = Ran comfortably under planned 3:20 pace until 20 miles, then knee problem and fuel issues caused big slowdown at end.

Right = Ran consistently at planned pace, with a pace group.
Wrong = Didn’t get a season-long knee injury dealt with until after the race. Depended on race organizers to provide energy gel at advertised points on course. There was no gel at mile 13 (unless I somehow missed it), and there were no other gel points until mile 19, so I kinda ran low on fuel.

Other Stuff = Nice course; perfect weather (mid 30’s at start; mid 40’s at finish). Start line wasn’t crowded, even with 5000 runners. First event where I’ve seen a racer actually holding a cell phone conversation during the race!

Connilee Walter reports: (Connilee sent this right after the race and I forgot it)
Race = Rock Canyon Half Marathon
Location = Pueblo, CO
Date = December 4, 2004
Distance = 13.1 Miles
Goal = Break 1:40 at the very least, go sub-1:35 at the most
Results = 1:35:58
Website = http://www.socorunners.org

General = Three months postpartum, still getting back in shape. I’ve run two 5k’s, but this was my first race of longer distance. Went out knowing that I should be able to break 1:40 fairly easily, but hoping for better. Also, wanted to go out steady and finish strong. I ran mostly by my HRM and ended up coming close to my dream goal for this race (breaking 1:35), feeling very strong, and passing many folks in the last 2 miles.
Right =
Wrong =

Other Stuff = This was my first time running this course. As is characteristic of the Southern Colorado Roadrunners, it was a well-organized, friendly event. The course started in City Park on pavement, but quickly came down by the river where it was mostly a trail/gravel road out and back. The weather was excellent for December, and I was told that they usually do have great weather for this race. There were several IC’ers there who had great races!

1/2/05 Sun: 73 showed on a great day for running. Conditions to Barr Camp were icy as usual, but most of those with screw shoes had little or no problems. However, we had one broken elbow today on the descent just above the Incline Overlook. I am told S&R had to go get her:-(
