Hi there ICers,

Oh my gosh — the sun has been out for two days now! I don’t know about you but I find myself smiling a lot more:-)

##
You will see that we are doing Section 16 again this week. We did not run it over the winter because the backside gets rather icy. However, many like the fact that so much of it is rather fast running. For those shooting for the Pikes Peak Marathon (or any marathon or ultra) you can add on Gold Camp Road and High Drive which is also rather fast running to make a nice figure 8 before heading back to Manitou via the Intemann trail.

##
Registration for the Barr Trail Mountain Race started this week. http://www.runpikespeak.com The entry fee is currently $20. In honor of the 6th running there is a $6 discount for anyone who has done them all — quite a few ICers actually. The BTMR is the club run for July 17th.

##
See you today and Sunday!

NEXT RUNs:
###############################################
Thursday, May 5, 5:45pm — Hydro Street
Warm up from Memorial Park! Leave the park in time to get to Hydro Street on time. Do 30 minutes of 1 minute hard, 1 minute easy up the Barr Trail or to No Name Creek, whichever comes first. After an easy run back down the Barr Trail do 6 Hydro Street hill repeats. Cool down back to the park.

Sunday, May 8, 8:00am — Memorial Park
Run out El Paso Blvd and turn right before Hwy 24. Take the dirt shortcut to Crystal Park Rd. Run Intemann Trail until it connects with Section 16. Head right and run that until taking a left down High Drive to connect back to Section 16. Finish the loop and return via Manitou Avenue. 2-3.5 hours. LONGER OPTION: Add in Gold Camp Road and High Drive!

R REPORTS:
###############################################
Richard Hedlind reports:
Race = Flying Pig Marathon
Location = Cincinnati, OH
Date = 5/1/2005
Distance = 26.2 miles
Goal = Beat the 4 hour ghost.
Results = 3.53.26 (beat the 4 hour ghost!!!)
Website = http://www.flyingpigmarathon.org

General = This was my fifth marathon and I have been struggling in my previous marathons with not being able to run through the whole race (always ending up walking the last miles) and not been able to finish within 4 hours. Not drinking enough, drinking too much, going out too hard has been some of my problems. This time everything worked as planned.

Right = Conservative start and kept a 9min pace until mile 16 when I increased the pace somewhat. Had a GU every 30 minutes and did not eat anything that was offered along the course to avoid fiber intake :). Brought Gatorade Endurance in my waist camelback and drank some water at random aid stations.

Wrong = Not much. Next time I’ll do some stretching before the start. I entered the start area two minutes before the gun.

Other Stuff = Nice course through downtown Cincinnati and neighborhoods. Early start during sunrise added some spectacular views. A few hilly miles around mile 7-9 but otherwise rolling hills. The weather was perfect. Sunshine but not hot. Well organized with plenty of aid stations and a relatively large crowd. People handing out goodies (oranges, chocolate) along the way.

Steve Bremner reports:
Race = Delaware Trail Marathon
Location = Newark, DE
Date = April 30th, 2005
Distance = 26.2 miles
Goal = sub 4hrs
Results = 3hrs44min
Website = http://www.udel.edu/johnmack/traildawgs/tc/

General = http://cloud.prohosting.com/~mtnclmbr/marathons/de/delaware_tm.htm

Right = Well hydrated.

Wrong = Ran too hard from the beginning.

Other Stuff = Wonderful, fun course. Very challenging and interesting throughout. I strongly recommend running trail marathons vice their counterpart--the dreaded, unforgiving roads!

Joe and Brenda Cowell report:
Race = Shiprock Marathon
Location = Shiprock N.M.
Date = 4-30-05
Distance = 26.2 miles
Goal = finish 7th marathon in as many months
Results = met goal

General = Brenda and I ran this together and found it to be one of the best organized races we’ve done. Course was beautiful and weather was perfect.

Right = Sunscreen, drank Gatorade and water at each aid station

Wrong = The apple Carboom didn’t sit well.

Other Stuff = The race was to benefit and promote good health on the Navajo reservation. Met several very nice people and we enjoyed the whole experience. We dragged the last several miles. Our legs may need a rest. Not sure about next month’s marathon. We may take a month off.

Theresa Pitman reports:
Race = Salt Lake City Marathon
Location = Salt Lake City, UT
Date = April 23, 2005
Distance = 26.2
Goal = 3:40
Results = 3:53
Website = http://saltlakecitymarathon.com

General = Fun race and not as hilly as one would think but it was definitely enough to feel it in my legs 5 days later. It looked mainly downhill with little hills in between and the downhill took it’s toll on my quads by mile 18 when I fell off my pace. Two free concerts, one the day before (The Romantics) and one the night after the race, Third Eye Blind took the edge off of the race. It is such a beautiful city it was hard to stay off my feet.

Right = Training up to when I should have been tapering, I’m not very good at tapering. Probably should have done some more downhill running to get my quads ready.
Wrong = Not a good taper, which is hard considering my job is a personal trainer, and the fact I was visiting my friend and her super cute kids who I couldn’t stop playing with. I probably should have gotten off the trails a little bit since the road really pounded on my legs. I also was nursing some patellar tendonitis which started to flare up about halfway through.

Other Stuff = This could be a really fast race, at least for an altitude person (it’s at about 4500’), but you have to train for the downhill, unfortunately I haven’t made it to the Barr Trail since it’s been icy.

5/1/05 Sun: Or should we spell out Sunday since there was again no Sun which has not been seen since, well, I forget, but it has been a while. At any rate, 57 ICers came out to run up to Barr Camp in more snow than we had most of the winter. It was cold, it was humid and at times it just sucked. Man, listen to this whining! Make it go away — and take this freaking weather with you!

4/28/05 Thur: The “Day of Fog” complete with a 50 car pile-up on I-25 took the group size down to 39 and ended perfect Thursday streaks for 9 ICers. Add to that the cold and humidity and well, welcome to April in Colorado! Sometimes you just do what you gotta do and put the run in your database to pull out on some dark and desolate mile in a race!
