Hi ICers,
What a week weve had weather-wise, starting with lots of fresh snow over
the weekend and continuing with ice and snow all week! A big pat on the
back goes out to the 62 who showed up for a very gorgeous and snowy IC run
last Sunday. One of our members took some pictures of the runners, the
trails, and the incredible scenery. Check them out at:

With as cold as it is out there today, its hard to imagine that the
weather forecasters are predicting great running weather for the weekend,
but the forecast for Sunday looks great! So plan to come out for a run to
Barr Camp on Sunday. Dont forget to bring your own water, or money with
which to purchase water once you hit Barr Camp.
***
Mark your calendars now for Christmas weekend when well be celebrating
Christmas Incline Club style, with runs on both Saturday, December 24 and
on Sunday, December 25. Come to whichever one (or both!) that best fits
your holiday schedule. You will find sign-ups and other runners both
days!
Warmly,
Connilee

Theres a 5-race, 2-day, trail event, in January, near Bloomington.
Several of us from the DenverTrailRunners group are going. Id like to
invite others to join us to make an even larger Colorado contingent. The
event is Jan 21-22, near Bloomington, IN. The 5 races are: 10km, Sat, 3pm;
4mi, Sat, 8pm (night run); 5km, Sun, 7:30am; 10mi, Sun, 9am; 1mi, Sun,
11:30am
You can do the event as an individual or relay. Apparently, the trails can be fairly hilly. Entry is $125 (for individuals), which includes lodging (Sat night), meals, and other activities. This just sounds too crazy not to try it out.

Doc Aguilar writes:
Doc Aguilar and Kathy Karst are long time ICers who participate in the IC
workouts to improve their triathlon times. Looks like its working. Kathy
was picked up very early in the 2005 season as a member of Team USA to
represent the good ol red, white and blue at the World Age Group
Triathlon Championships in Honolulu. It took Doc a little longer. At the
very last opportunity, he qualified for Nationals with a 2nd place at
Western Region Championships. From Nationals he made the US team for
Worlds.
The World Championship race was held on Oct 9 with 6,000 age groupers from
all over the planet. After a swim in heavy swells off Wakiki, a very
windy bike leg past Diamond Head, and a hot run between Wakiki and
Honolulu, Kathy placed 7th in the international field. Doc says he got
run over pretty bad, but hes satisfied with just qualifying. Actually,
Doc frequently has the fastest run split of his age group (credit the IC)
but has too much ground to make up after what he calls his humiliating
swim"(no reflection on the IC training regimen). The two credit the IC
workouts for a great portion of their triathlon fitness level. The
aerobic and endurance benefits of the IC workouts transfer over nicely to
the swim and bike portions of triathlon and of course the run.
Naturally the couple also pays homage to the true mission of the IC by competing annually in the Ascent. Kathy shattered her age group record by 16 minutes in 04. The record stands after its first challenge in 05. Doc says hes just a hack when it comes to the Ascent and sees no point in trying to get out from under Kathys shadow (even though shes only 5 feet tall). The couple will resume the IC workouts after the real doc releases Doc from physical therapy following shoulder and elbow surgery (dont ask).

Kelli Lusk writes:
Just was reading over the first Incline newsletter of the season. Im so
envious! Ive really missed training with the club since my husband and I
moved to Massachusetts back in 2003. All those Sunday morning runs in the
winter really developed strong base fitness (and it was motivating to run
with other masochistic runners in the freezing cold!)
The training is nice where we live in western mass (lots of trails, a bike path for intervals, and low-traffic roads), but its not the same as running up Barr Trail, Longs Ranch, or Waldo!
I have to settle for being a virtual club member nowadays, but Ill be with you in spirit on those Sunday runs! Sincerely, Kelli Lusk, Belchertown, MA

R REPORTS:
***********************************************
Connilee Walter reports:
Race: Rock Canyon Half Marathon
Distance: 13.1 miles
Goal: Good day, no snow: break 1:30
Results: 1:33:07 (my watch)
Website: http://www.socorunners.org
General Summary:
Based on a recent 5k, I really thought I would be able to break 1:30 in
this race. As we drove down to Pueblo in a snowstorm, I quickly realized
this would not happen (but of course was optimistic that Pueblo would
miraculously be sunny, and the trails would be clear! HA!). Anyhoo,
despite snow and slush and nasty cramped calves, eeked out a 1:33 and
change, fourth overall woman. It was an incredibly gorgeous day; with lots
of fresh snow hugging the trees and prettying the landscape.
Things Done Right:
At the last minute, I was debating running pants vs. shorts. I ended up
opting for running pants and I am glad I did; my legs needed the extra
warmth. Paced well.
Things Done Wrong:
Cant do anything about the weather; and I was fine with readjusting my
time goal. But something I could control was mental preparation; one
mistake I made was that I was not as mentally prepared for this race as I
should have been.

WWW POSTS:

12/04 Sun: A big snowstorm, which left quite a bit of ice on the roads,
and some serious cold combined to take the group down to only 62 runners
today. And oh, were they in for a treat as it was the seasons first run
up Longs Ranch Road. It didnt disappoint with one newbie reporting that
it was quite a grind and that was BEFORE we got to the big hills. It was
quite the challenge but that is what the IC is all about!
