Incline Club News V10 LR #9

Subject: Incline Club News V10 LR #9

Good afternoon, ICers!

What a week it’s been in the running world. Several ICers were at Rock N
Roll Arizona when Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia shattered the world
record in the half marathon with a time of 58 minutes, 55 seconds. Even
trail runners can be impressed by the sheer speed of such a feat on the
roads. Amazing.

At the opposite end of the spectrum from a road race at sea level, a few
ICers were out and about at the first race of the Winter Series. It was a
gorgeous day, the trails were in great condition, and it’s always great to
see ICers participating in local races. While neither the 5k nor the 10k
qualified for an “R,” feel free to submit a non-R report if you want to
share your race with the rest of the club.

***
Take note that this is the last weekend of the ‘short’ runs with a run to
Barr Trail and back. Starting on January 29, we will start a period of
longer runs with the Waldo/LRR double loop!

Train hard, and train smart!

Dry Chapped Hands Solution
Nicki Rosa writes: (in response to Matt’s handwashing reminder in last
weeks news) Great idea to wash hands as often as possible to avoid getting
sick! And here’s a tip to avoid dry, chapped hands caused by lots of
washing: Burt’s Bees Hand Salve is the best stuff I’ve ever used.
Mountain Mama has it, and also Walgreen’s.

Caffeine and altitude?

Lion Tracks On Longs?!
Jason Jungbauer reports: Trail hazards! On our Sunday run I saw around
20-30 mtn lion tracks on longs- and no i am not confusing them with the
120 dog tracks:) i would say there is a hungry cat out there.
Also, today i was up on the Barr (trail) and there had been a small rock
slide on the trail- it was between the top of the incline trail and no
name creek on the flat section where the hill goes up on your right. it
looked as if there is more rock that could come down especially if we get
some more moisture and thaw and freeze cycles. it was not a huge amount
of rock but the largest rock could have done some damage- especially to a
person.

“R” REPORTS:
***********************************************

Rescue Run 10k
Trish McCormick reports:
Race: 2006 Rescue Run
Location: Palmer Park
Date: 01-Jan-06
Distance: 10K
Goal: To finish, I was obligated to party the night before.
Results: 1:10:09
Website:
http://www.pprrun.org/results/2006_results/2006_rescue_run_10k.htm

General Information: It was a beautiful morning and the view was
wonderful. I was somewhat distracted by the view, and might have
lollygagged a bit. The roads and trails were perfect. Pretty good turn
out — great benefit to SAR.

Things done right: Showed up and ran the 10K.

Things done wrong: Not enough sleep, only a catnap before the run.
May have to nix party next year.

Caliko 30k
Anita Bower reports:
Race: Calico 50km and 30km
Location: Calico Ghost Town CA
Date: January 15th, 2006
Distance: 30km
Goal: finish
Results: 4:31:00

General Information: This is a really good, scenic, tough 50km and 30km.
Starts and finishes in a ghost town, which is kind of neat.

Things done right: Switched to the 30km instead of the 50km. Running 50
miles the day before, and driving a total of 6 hours in the LA area, plus
two hours on a boat filled with hyper teenagers the day before, then
turning around and waking up at 4:30 in the morning left me a little
drained for the 50km. All the wind in CA must have decided to go to
Calico, and there was lots of dirt and dust in the air. Free
micro-dermabrasion for all the runners!

Things done wrong: Switched to the 30k. I felt like a woosie.
Other Stuff: A good race, although the stupid dirt bikes and ATV’s kicked
up lots of dust, and were all around very irritating.

Avalon 50 mile run
Anita Bower reports:
Location: Catalina Island, CA
Date: January 14, 2006
Distance: 50 miles
Goal: 10 hours
Results: 10:07:00 (about)
Website: http://avalon50.com

General Information: The Avalon 50 mile is run on the very hilly and
beautiful Catalina Island off the coast of Long Beach CA. About 20 miles
of pavement, and the rest is on dirt roads.

Things done right: Took a flashlight to the start! The first hour was
dark, despite a glowing full moon. This helped me to go out faster since I
finally figured out after nearly seven years of ultra-running you can run
faster when you can see the trail. I also watched for buffalo, which live
on the island. If you should decide to run this race, I wouldn’t wear red.
Even if red is your favorite color, favorite shirt, or power color that
aligns your chakras with the universe, red is not a good color to wear
when you are running amongst buffalo. One charged a woman wearing a bright
red shirt. Good thing her shorts weren’t red! (she was unharmed, just
shaken) I took in plenty of calories, and had a good time with friends,
and was able to take the early boat over to Long Beach to run another race
the next morning.

Things done wrong: Had too much baggage. It was calling for lots of rain
and thunderstorms, so I carried all kinds of rain gear. Turned out I
needed none of it, as it only misted heavily. With 100 % humidity and 60
degree temperatures, and no wind, nobody really needed a rain coat, so
there were lots of runners with all kinds of cloths hanging off them
throughout the race.

Other Stuff: Driving 3 hours in the LA area was more taxing than running
50
miles.

Rock n Roll Marathon
Richard Hedlind reports:
Date: 1/15/06
Distance: 26.2
Goal: 3.45
Results: 3.49
Website: http://www.rnraz.com

General Information: A very flat course that goes through Phoenix,
Scottsdale and Tempe. The course is lined with bands playing, which adds a
good distraction in the beginning but the loud music was a bit annoying on
the last miles. The scenic
surroundings of the valley can be seen from the course. The weather was
good and relatively cold for Phoenix. :)

Things done right: Stayed on pace using my GPS. Hydrated at ate GU
consistently and ignored everything else that was served.

Things done wrong: I decided to go up to my final, faster pace too early.
Should have waited a few more miles. I hit the wall the last miles and
lost sight of my goal. Oh well, next time.

Other Stuff: This course is really flat and fast. Low altitude and
comfortable weather makes this a good course for PR.

Rock n Roll Marathon
James Cannon reports:
Date: 1/15/06
Distance: 26.2
Goal: 4:00
Results: 4:17
Website: http://www.rnraz.com

General Information: Race course was flat through the streets of Phoenix,
Scottsdale, and Tempe, Arizona. The combined registered participation of
the full and half marathons was around 33k with around 8k marathon
finishers and 18k half marathon finishers. Fortunately, the marathon and
half marathon were run on different courses.

Things done right: Decided to do the race. Yes it was a big race run on
pavement, but it was a great mid winter break. Plus the side trip to
Sedona was fabulous (think a mini Moab).

Things done wrong: Did not train on pavement. This was a very wrong
move!!! After the half way point, the pounding from the pavement took a
heavy toll. The last half was very ugly.

Other Stuff: I saw quite a few ICers there. Looks like others were
looking for a break as well.

NON-R REPORTS:

Winter Series Race #1
Connilee Walter reports:
Race: Winter Series I 5k
Location: Fox Run/Black Forest
Date: 1/14/06
Goal: Sub-25 minutes
Results: 23:27
Website: www.pprrun.org

General Information: ROLLING hills are the name of the game in Fox Run.
This is a slow course due to the hills, and MUCH slower under it’s
’normal’ icy and snowy conditions this time of year. However, last
weekend the temps were in the 50s and PPRR reports that these were the
best trail conditions for this course in several years: clear and dry with
only a few isolated patches of ice.

Things done right: Didn’t worry about ‘pace’; focused more on ‘place’ and
running smart. Ran a good warm up and cool down.

Things done wrong: One of my little helpers (kiddos) ran off with my
trainers on race morning, so I ran my warm up, race and cool down in my
racing shoes. I do prefer to be able to switch shoes, but not a big deal.

1/15/2006 Sun: 76 ICers showed for the last solo trip up LRR. Meaning, the
next time we do LRR it will be after doing Waldo. Although a tad windy
today it was great running with little in the way of snow. Even Bobs Road
was mostly clear for those that wanted to add on a little more to the
standard run.
