Good morning, ICers!

This is it!
Its time for the big daddie long run! Waldo/LRR:-) For those that have
been doing out/backs consider trying to knock off just one of the loops.
Please remember to bring plenty of fluids and perhaps some fuel. Also,
your recovery will go better if you keep some food in your car and
eat/hydrate as soon as you finish your run. Have fun!

Training for Pikes Peak
What can you do besides run with the Incline Club to make your 2006
Ascent/Marathon the best it can be? There are many training tips and
resources at http://www.skyrunner.com/peak.htm. For those who prefer a
comprehensive printed version, an excellent training manual is available
here: http://www.skyrunner.com/guide/index.htm

The IC Trail Running Race Calendar
The IC Trail Running Race Calendar (towards the end of this newsletter)
includes all local trail races, and many that are in surrounding areas.
It does not currently include (many) snowshoe races or races in parts of
the state that are more than 1-2 hours away. Would including more
snowshoe races and/or trail races that are further away be of service to
you? Let me know!

Train hard, and train smart!

Cat In the Chat Is Back!
So, the dog people, it appears are unrelenting in their specious attacks
on the big cats (re: tracks on Longs Peak). I would remind the submitter
and readers that the drive in the car to the Longs Peak trail-head is
actually significantly more dangerous than running on a trail with cat
tracks (few cats, if any, drive drunk or talking on cell phones).
Furthermore, dozens people are killed annually by domesticated dogs
whereas the mortality rate from big cats is a mere
hand full per decade. Disclaimer: I admit to being an avowed cat person,
harboring a bias toward dog persons. Dog persons, after all, do have
co-dependant personalities whereas cat people have independent
personalities. And by the way, dog persons, the big cat is much more
attracted to your dog than to you so just make sure to hit the trail with
at least one dog that is slower than you.

Q. What do dogs get on intelligence tests?
A. Drool (note: this can also be used as a Bush joke)

Have a grrrrrreat day ~ Bob (the big cat) Jones

More Kitty Kat Talk
Nancy Hobbs writes: So, today on my IC run with a friend who was in town
from Eagle (L.J. Bredeson)...mountain lion tracks!

We ran up Rampart Range Road to the gate (the one on the right side that
goes down toward the Navigators). The tracks started just past the gate
and were rather fresh. The tracks were headed uphill (we were going
downhill), so we felt safe. Nonetheless we still stopped quite a few times
and considered another route because they were BIG paw prints and we made
tons of noise hoping to dissuade a hungry cat. The tracks went almost the
entire way down the snow-covered road. When we turned onto the single
track (the one that goes to the Garden) we didn’t see any more tracks
(lots of shoe tracks indicating human traffic).

Just thought I’d send this along as I recall the note about the lion
tracks on/near Barr Trail recently...

Marathon Madness
Connilee Walter writes: For ICers who marathon, here are some interesting
2005 stats from marathonguide.com:

*383,000 marathon finishing times were recorded in the United States in
2005.
*312 marathons took place in the USA last year, an average of six every
weekend.
*Women now make up 40% of all marathon finishers in the USA, up from 37.5%
in 2000.
*The top-5 marathons in the USA in terms of finishers were New York
(36,872), Chicago (32,995), Honolulu (24,219), Los Angeles (19,985) and
Marine Corps (19,110).
*The New Las Vegas Marathon debuted in 2005 with 9,385 finishers, making
it the 8th largest in the country.
*Only 1.6% of all finishers, male and female, broke three hours and only
0.1% broke two hours, thirty minutes

“R” REPORTS:
***********************************************

Winter Series 10k
Neal Oseland reports:
Race: Winter Series I
Location: Fox Run Regional Park
Date: 1/14/06
Distance: 10k
Goal: Top 5
Results: 5th

General Information: I was pretty excited at the prospect of running this
course ice free. I’ve run Winter series 6 times and there is always snow,
ice or both on the ground. It’s a really tough course in any
circumstances.

Things Done Right: Stayed mentally strong even though I was physically
spent. I just focused on keeping my heart rate at a high level without
dipping too far into the red zone. Those hills that I thought would be so
easy without any snow cover killed me.

Things Done Wrong: I had told some friends who were racing this course for
the first time, “be careful to stay within yourself on the first 1/4 mile
of downhill.” Good advice. Too bad I didn’t listen to it. I went out way
too hard and paid for it for the next 5.9 miles. I got too excited about
the lack of snow. My overall time suffered dramatically as a result.

Rock Canyon Half Marathon
Neal Oseland reports:
Race: Rock Canyon 1/2 Marathon
Location: City Park in Pueblo
Date: 12/3/05
Distance: 13.1
Goal: Top 10
Results: 2nd-1:24:32
Website: http://www.socorunner.org

General Information: Originally, I was hoping to run under 1:20.
Unfortunately, there was no way this would happen with the nasty weather
that came down race morning. It was extremely slushy throughout the entire
course which made it a very slow day. It was, however, a lot of fun. Dave
Diaz always puts on a great race. I was really happy with the way I raced.
Aside from a brief lapse of focus, I ran about as well as I could on this
particular day. I’m pretty sure I ate my race fees worth of donuts at the
post race table. I’m still trying to burn that off!

Things Done Right: I just focused on competing. I never looked at my watch
for pace. I just ran my race while trying to stay ahead of the folks
behind me and chase the guy ahead of me (didn’t even come close).

Things Done Wrong: I lost mental focus between miles 9-10. I feel it cost
me about 20 seconds and the confidence to make an attempt to chase down
the leader (which was remote at best in the first place).

Arizona Rock n Roll Marathon
Christa Lloyd reports:
Location: Phoenix, AZ
Date: 1/15/06
Distance: 26.2
Goal: Qualify for Boston (3:40)
Results: 3:19.33, 1st female 18-24
Website: http://www.rnraz.com

General Information: Flat course, beautiful weather, and LOW elevation
made this a great race! This was only my second marathon, and the bands
and cheerleaders along the course really kept my mind occupied, not to
mention all the green plants and flowers everywhere. Quite a change from
snowy Colorado! The evening concert rounded out the day, too--Overall
tons of fun and I highly recommend it!

Things Done Right: I think living & training at 7700 feet elevation had
something to do with it... I alternated between water and energy drinks at
the aid stations, and had a Clif shot at miles 10 and 19, which seemed to
be the perfect times to keep me from bonking. I started off
conservatively, then picked it up when I still felt good at the 10k point,
and ran my second half about two minutes faster than the first.

Things done wrong: I got sick about two weeks before the race and wasn’t
able to get a quality long run in, so I did a tough 15-miler the weekend
before the race (windy, icy, hilly conditions... yuk). I think I could
have had a more consistent training schedule, too. But I really can’t
complain about my race!

1/22/2006 Sun: 72 showed for a trip up the Barr Trail and back. Barr Camp
outdid themselves today by having not just one but several different kinds
of homemade cookies waiting for us when we got there! But the getting
there was hard part with all the mushy snow on the trail. Made for some
slow times but all who made it left with a full stomach!
