Thank You from a Visitor
Matt Messner writes: Thank-you for posting the run maps and descriptions
on the website. I am visiting from Seattle and today I went out and ran
the Soda Springs — Rampage Range Rd — Waldo Canyon — UPT loop. It was
a tough run, but really enjoyable. I’m toying with the idea of running an
ultra this year (White River). To view a blog I wrote after today’s run
go to www.mattmessner.com. Thanks again.

(Note from editor: Nice write-up in Matt’s blog; take a look!)

Race at Paint Mines in July — New Race!
Nancy Hobbs writes: I know it is early, but I thought it would be fun to
send out a teaser on a new trail race this year. On Thursday, July 27 at
6:30PM we’ll have the first Paint Mines Race and Fun Run. Approximately
3-4 miles in length all within the confines of Paint Mines Park
(http://adm.elpasoco.com/parks/pdf/Story%20of%20the%20Paint%20Mines.pdf)
which is a very cool spot. We’re also looking to include a short kids
obstacle/fun run.

The Colorado Running Company will be doing the timing and results and I’ll
be doing the logistics as part of my new job with the El Paso County Parks
and Leisure Services Department. We’ll have some cool prizes. This race is
part of the El Paso County Fair Activities (the fair runs July 22-29). It
would be great if the Icers could carpool out and do this run as opposed
to the usual Thursday night run in Manitou — and get credit! Yes, it’s a
bit further to go to Calhan, but it’ll be really unique and fun. Stay
tuned for details.

“R” REPORTS:
***********************************************

Snowman Stampede
Diane Repasky reports:
Location: Cherry Creek State Park
Date: Feb.25,2006
Distance: 20 miles
Goal: 2:54:30 finish top 3 age group
Results: 2:58:01 finished 4th age group
Website: http://www.winterdistanceseries.com

General Information: Road and trail race thru Cherry Creek State
Park, rolling hills, bike path and single track trail.

Things Done Right: Good taper, well rested, well hydrated, consistent
training.

Things Done Wrong: Went out a little too fast, seemed to start losing
consistent pace after mile 15. Need to work on maintaining that for full
marathon.

Winter Series 20k
Ted Bidwell reports
Location: Black Forest
Date: 2/25/06
Distance: 20K
Goal: Tempo run workout — 8 minute miles
Results: Just under 8 per mile/1:37:31
Website: http://www.pprrun.org/

General Information: Last of the Winter Series runs, long enough to get a
good workout and run a little faster than I need to. See where my
training is.

Things Done Right: Went out easy at 8:15/mile and ran a negative second
half split. Ran a little extra during the week and did my normal weight
training throughout the week to in sure that I did not “race” this run.

Things Done Wrong: Not anything I can point to.

Coyote 4Play
Tom Hamilton reports:
Location: Santa Monica Mountains, Oxnard, California
Date: Feb. 23-26
Distance: Four day stage run
Goal: log some miles
Results: Thur 7mi, Fri 30mi, Sat 20mi, Sun 12mi.
Website: http://gravityh.com/c4p2006entry.htm

General Information: The Coyote4Play is a four day stage run through the
Santa Monica Mountains. Three of the days are in Point Mugu State Park
and one in the Los Padres National Forest east of Ojai. Half fire roads
and half single track. Well supported run with some great gear included.
Each night there is a buffet dinner and some kind of activity. I won the
bowling tourney. Thursday is a 7 mile warm-up run. Friday- 50 mile with
options for 40, 30 or 20. Saturday- 40 mile with options for 30, 20 or 12.
Sunday- 30 mile with options for 20 or 12. About 90 total runners
including some of the top U.S. ultra-runners.

Things Done Right: Enjoyed the warm weather and great views. No injuries.
Some great meals and gear included in the run price.

Things Done Wrong: Under hydrated on the 30 miler. Over beer-ated at the
bowling tournament. Motel too close to 101 highway noise. Returned too
late Sunday night. Ran shorter than desired on Saturday in order to watch
the finish of the Tour of California bike race in Thousand Oaks.

2/26/2006 Sun: An AWESOME day brought out 74 ICers. This was the nicest
Sunday weather-wise that we have had in a long, long time. Pretty much the
exact opposite of last week. We headed up Rampart Range Road and then
down, over and up into Waldo Canyon via the bail trail to return via the
UTE Pass Trail. Yes, I said it, but it was just an awesome day for
running!
