Good morning ICers..
The Last of the Winter Weather?
Although this weeks snowstorms could be the last of our winter weather,
the extra moisture is very welcome and much-needed. Isnt it wonderful to
see our Peak covered in the white stuff? But alas, it is March and Spring
will really be here before we know it!

And Speaking of Spring In the Air. Thursday Runs Start Soon!
Matt Carpenter writes: IC Thursday runs start up April 6th. If you are not
already doing quality workouts during the week, I recommend that you add
in some pickups and even a few 1 minute hard, 1 minute easy, sessions
between now and the 6th. The workouts dont need to be too structured as
their goal is just to help ease the transition into the Thursdays.
Here are a couple of examples:
Example 1:
20 minute warm-up
Do 5 sets of running hard for 4 telephone poles and running easy for 3
telephone poles
20 minute cooldown
Example 2:
20 minute warm-up
10 minutes of 1 minute hard, 1 minute easy
20 minute cool-down
For either workout pace yourself so that you feel like you could do twice
as many hard sections as you will actually be doing (5 in either case).
Both of these workouts should be easy to do for anyone who has been
running the Sunday runs. For that matter they should be easy to do for
just about anyone who has been running on a regular basis! The main
advantage of example 2 is that you will get a head start on developing
your sense of timing for the 1 on, 1 off workout we will be doing every
other week on Thursdays. The other advantages are that you can do that
workout on trails and even uphills:-)
Remember, the point of the above workouts is not to be hard in and of
themselves. The point of the workouts is to ease into doing harder runs
instead of just showing up on April 6th ready to get hurt

Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon In the News

PIKES PEAK ASCENT
Officials ponder registration change

The Pikes Peak Ascent has become two races. A race to Pikes Peaks
summit and a race to register for one of the 1,800 spots.
Last year registration filled in three days. This year, with hundreds
of people poised at their computers when registration started at 8 a.m
March 1, it filled in nine hours, 53 minutes.
In the future, the window is going to get shorter and shorter. You can
envision a time when registration lasts just a few minutes, said race
director Ron Ilgen.
So what? You snooze you lose, seems to be the prevailing attitude
among local runners, who, after all, thrive on trying to get something
first.
But a few runners are calling for change.
The race cant let in more runners because the size is capped by the
U.S. Forest Service, but the sign-up period could be increased through a
lottery.
I think a lottery system is better and more fair, said Adam Feerst,
founder of the Denver Trail Runners, in a post on Inclineclub.com, a local
running Web site. Not everyone has the luxury of being at their computer
when registration opens. I know some people who couldnt get in the Ascent
because they were busy at work.
Local runners immediately logged on to disagree. Of the 23 responses to
his post as of Wednesday, only one wanted a lottery.
The problem with a lottery, is that it leaves everything up to
chance, said Matt Carpenter, who holds the record for the Ascent and the
Pikes Peak Marathon.
He estimates a lottery would give racers about a one-in-two chance of
getting into the race.
The way it is now, if you want to get in the Ascent, you put it on
your calendar and you get in, he said. It may be tough to remember to
register March 1 at 8 a.m., but its no tougher than showing up at the
starting line in August at 8 a.m. If we have a lottery, the only people it
will reward are procrastinators.
Different races have responded to surging popularity in different ways.
Colorados most grueling race, the Hardrock 100, and other flagship
races such as New Hampshires Mount Washington Road Race and the New York
Marathon, use a lottery.
The sign-up period lasts much longer than registration for the Ascent
did this year, but a racer entering the Hardrock, has less than a
one-in-five chance of getting in.
The Way Too Cool 50K in California still uses a first come, first
serve sign-up. Its 450 spots filled up last year in 15 minutes.
The Triple Crown of Running, which organizes the Ascent, plans to look
at a lottery and other ways to corral the registration rush next year.
Something needs to be done, said Ilgen, who was deluged by calls from
runners who missed the cut. We want to be equitable and fair. Is a
lottery the best way? Well find out.
Runners have pointed out other ways to limit the field without a
lottery.
Organizers could raise the cut-off times to weed out slower racers, or
raise the price to weed out poorer racers.
Or, they could use a suggestion local runner Valerie Prothe posted on
Inclineclub.com to weed out the faint of heart.
Put the sign-up at a table right after runners cross the finish line,
after struggling 13 miles and 7,815 feet, often through hail and
lightning, she said.
I wonder how quickly it would fill then? she wrote.

Last Weeks Report from Matt Carpenter
Note from the editor: In last weeks R report, I failed to include the
name of the submitter for the Jeremy Wright North American Snowshoe
Championships Race Report. Although some folks caught on to my error b/c
of Matts distinct writing style, he deserves recognition for his
submission. Thanks, Matt, for your great report and my apologies for
inadvertently excluding your name!

Old Pueblo 50+ Mile
Anita Bower reports:
Location: Sonoita AZ
Date: March 4th, 2006
Distance: 50+ miles
Goal: under 11 hours
Results: 12:42:19
General Information: OP50 is a tough rocky 50 mile run in southern AZ that
has an average grade of 6%. Great scenery, and very well marked and
organized.
Things Done Right: Nothing
Things Done Wrong: Didnt drink enough, or eat enough from the get-go.
Went into the race tired and grumpy. Missed going under 11 hours.
Other Stuff: The last 4 miles after the final AS is actually 4 1/2. After
running for almost 45 minutes after the 46 mile AS, a hiker cheerfully
told me that I only had 3 1/2 miles to go. I really had to bite my lip,
because I thought I would have surely had less than 3 miles to go. But I
think it was good mental training for Leadville and other 100s, because
sometimes you have to keep going even when you are in a big funk. If you
keep going long enough, you WILL eventually reach the finish. This is a
really tough, but well organized 50 miler, with some of the best
volunteers in ultra-running.

Lake Hodges 50km

Date: March 11th, 2006
Distance: 50km
Goal: finish
Results: 7:02

General Information: LH 50km is run outside of Escondido, CA, around a
small lake surrounded by mountains.
Things Done Right: Went into the race relaxed, with no particular goal,
other than to finish. Ate enough, and drank enough, which helped keep me
happy.
Things Done Wrong: I could have pushed a lot harder.
Other Stuff: All night torrential downpours, and early morning thunder
storms made for some last minute changes on the course, and along with a
new race director, made it one big confusing mess. A lot of runners
missed sections of the mountain parts of the race, and finished over an
hour ahead of me, which really pissed me off, especially when the RD
didnt even do anything, that I know of, to correct things. I would have
finished first in my age group otherwise. A lot of the volunteers were
confused too, and told runners to go in the wrong direction. There also
was lots of hail and a dead rat on one of the trails to keep things
interesting.

1st Annual Run Through Time Marathon and Half Marathon

Location: Salida, CO
Date: 3/18/06
Distance: 1/2 marathon and full
Goal: 1/2 marathon in 2:30
Results: 2:23:51

General Information: Dirt/gravel roads (one mile paved) up to ghost town
of Turret. Gain of about 2,000 for the marathon, per race info. Cool,
cloudy weather alternating with warm sun kept runners shedding clothes and
re-dressing. Road was similar to Rampart Range Rd, so I felt confident.
To me, it would be two runs--the first a tough, long uphill, the second a
downhill fly. The first/last mile was a detour hill, that I probably
attacked a little too hard on the way out, and had to walk up it at the
end.
Things Done Right: Ate well, hit the port-a-potty before the pre-race
meeting, good equipment (including some pink gaiters) and good attitude.
Listened to GOOD, rockin music on the drive down, so had good stuff in my
head. Flew downhill, passed a few runners, and closed in on ones whod
passed me well before the turnaround. Tempo runs, long legs and Barr
Trail paid off. Improved A LOT over the past year--no way I could have
done a 1/2 this time last year.
Things Done Wrong: Had trouble during mile 4, ran/walked most of it. But
resumed constant running at about mile 5. Still have to work on uphill
runs on long distances.
Other Stuff: I was disappointed in and embarrassed by my fellow runners,
who chatted while the race director was giving final instructions. First
race for a small town, so cant expect what others offer (timing, mile
markers, course info).

General Information: First seven miles packed forest road up Ute Creek
then snowy, muddy, hilly, rocky four wheel roads to Turret then back to
Salida.
Things Done Right: Dressed right and enjoyed the day and blustery weather.
Things Done Wrong: Chronic left ankle sprain recurred requiring slow miles
on the terrain.

Chambersburg 1/2 Marathon

Date: 3/18/06
Distance: 13.1 Miles
Goal: Have fun, beat my brother
Results: 1:24:51, beat my brother
General Information: Nice race, rolling hills the entire way. Strong
winds from mile 5 to the end. Since I dont get to race much with my
brother we decided to run this one together.
Things Done Right: Didnt go out to hard, enjoyed myself.
Thins Done Wrong: Training hasnt been where I had hoped.

1st Annual Run Through Time Marathon and Half Marathon
Jon Teisher reports:
Location: Salida, CO
Date: 3/18/2006
Distance: 26.2 miles
Goal: Finish
Results: 4:47:31
General Information: First annual A Run Through Time marathon and half
marathon. Marathon started in Salida and ran out to the ghost town of
Turrett, then finished back in Salida.
Things Done Right: Stayed in Salida the night before, doing that drive
early Sat morning would have sucked. Took the pace out slow, which helped
keep me going during the last, difficult parts of the race.
Things Done Wrong: Amicas pizza the night before was still sitting my
stomach after the race. Great microbrews there though. Probably
underdressed a bit, it got pretty cold up at the top of the hills.
Other Stuff: Course was a lot of fun. Mostly dirt roads, lots of ice and
rocks, the last nine miles were pretty muddy and rough. Elevation was
between 7000 and 9000 feet, with 3800+ feet of climbing. Tough course, I
thought my time woulda been about an hour faster.

3/19/2006 A chilly and foggy day did not stop 61 from coming out for a
trip up Rampart Range Road. It was very humid and Williams Canyon felt
more like a run through a tropical forest in Oregon. Later in the day the
skies opened up and let the white stuff fly! We needed that badly!!!
