Good afternoon, Incline Club!
Thursday and Sunday Runs
Join us for 30 minutes of tempo pace up Barr Trail tomorrow, 5:45 PM, at
Hydro Street. Enjoy the fact that the workout requires only 4 hydros
after the Barr Trail run. Then on Sunday, 8:00 AM, Memorial Park for a run
all the way to Barr Camp or beyond. Dont forget to bring lots of your
own water or some money to purchase water at Barr Camp. Enjoy!

The Star Boards for Sundays and Thursdays
Twelve rockin ICers have a star for every Sunday run so far this year;
and twenty-one have made all three Thursday workouts. Good job!

Trail Etiquette
Read below for the submission from Howard Brooks regarding trail etiquette
during the Thursday workout. As a follow-on to his comments, remember:
*If you are overtaking another runner or hiker on the trail it is
courteous to announce on your left to give them warning and allowing you
both space to pass. Say it *loudly* so that you can be sure they hear you.
*General trail etiquette also states that users should yield to horses
(fortunately, not applicable on Barr Trail!), and cyclists should yield to
those on foot. When going downhill, yield to the uphill user (of the same
type.)
*Last but not least, The Golden Rule Do Unto Others as Youd Have Done
Unto You applies to the trails; be pleasant and friendly out there!

Pikes Peak Fun Fact
We owe the inspiration for the lyrics of the beloved song, America the
Beautiful to the stunning vistas from the summit of Pikes Peak. It was
the summer of 1893, and Katharine Lee Bates, a professor of English at
Wellesley College, was in Colorado Springs to teach a summer session at
Colorado College. On July 22, Katharine, along with several others of the
visiting faculty, took a trip in a carriage to the summit of Pikes Peak.
Horses got them to the halfway point, and, as was customary, a team of
mules finished the climb to the 14,110 foot summit. Because altitude
sickness affected of one of the party, they only stayed on the summit a
half hour, but the brief experience was enough inspire a poem. She wrote..
An erect, decorous group, we stood at last on that Gate-of-Heaven
summit...and gazed in wordless rapture over the far expanse of mountain
ranges and sea like sweep of plain. Then and there the opening lines of
America the Beautiful sprang into being. ..... I wrote the entire song
on my return that evening to Colorado Springs.

Trail Etiquette Reminder
Howard Brooks writes: Fellow Trail Runners, it is unlikely that trail
running will be banned from any local trail, but that does not mean we
should ignore public opinion. After our Thursday night training run last
night, I got some very negative feedback from two different hikers.
In my opinion, we should never touch people we are passing, much less
bump or clip as the hikers reported. The other thing we did that
raised their ire was stopping in the middle of the trail at the end of our
hard minute, blocking their way, oblivious to those hiking up from behind.
Lets train hard, get strong, and be good citizens at the same time.

R REPORTS:
***********************************************
The Boston Marathon
John Goodloe reports:
Location: Boston, MA
Date: 4/17/06
Distance = 26.2 miles
Goal: sub 3 hours
Results: 3:10 :(
Website: http://www.baa.org
General Information: Race conditions were perfect, 55 degrees & overcast.
22,000 runners, 20K who qualified and about 2K running for a charity. The
race had a two wave start this year which seemed to solve a lot of
complaints about it taking 30 minutes for the last runner to cross the
starting line. My impression was that the race was extremely well
organized from the bus shuttles at the start to the bag pick up at the
end. Better than New York, although NYC has more entrants.
The tradition and history of the race is well respected and represented.
It really makes you feel a part of a the legacy.
Things Done Right: Well hydrated, well rested. I arrived a day early and
went to the expo early on Sunday. I went back to the room and stayed off
my feet. Because of
the race organization, it was possible to stay off your feet for the race
morning as well.
Things Done Wrong: I will have to limit this to saying that my training
program was too much for my 44 year old body. I piled on too much mileage
too early, got hurt about 5 weeks out and spent the rest of the time
trying to heal, run, hurt, rest, hurt, etc. The last 2.5 weeks did not
have enough running, and I lost some fitness there. At the starting line,
I had peaked early and didnt really have the strength to run 26 miles at
my goal pace. So, I ran my goal pace (6:40) until about mile 16 when I
started slipping down down down to my worst
mile (25) at 9:19. It was painful, depressing, etc. etc. But I finished.
Other Stuff: Ill be back with a new training program.

Brickyard 8 miler
Nancy Hobbs reports:
Location: Martinez, CA
Date: 4/23/06
Distance: 8 tough miles
Goal: faster than my training run the day before
Results: faster than my training run the day before 4th woman, 1:01:29
Website: http://diablorunners.com
General Information: There are two events, a 4 mile and an 8 mile. I
bounce back and forth between the two distances every year (last year I
did the 4, in 2004 I did the 8). The Diablo Road Runners do a great job
putting on this event and about 350 runners participate each year. Great
time to be in the East Bay.
Things Done Right: Went out easy, stayed at a comfortable pace throughout.
Enjoyed the event.
Things Done Wrong: Ran the course the day before (!) and my legs were a
bit tired. Nearly swallowed a bug at 3 miles coughed that sucker back
out. Took water at the 4 mile turn around and got it down the wrong pipe
and coughed for about 1/8 mile or so. Need to watch the drinking, or stop
for a better swig.
Other Stuff: The hills just dont quit. Just as tough on the outbound as
the return. Beautiful views of the Carquinez Straits. Cool Bricks for
prizes.

4/23/2006 Sun: 70 came out for our first run over to and around Section
16. I for one had forgotten how awesome it is to do some flat running on a
trail for a change:-)
4/20/2006 Thur: Another perfect day brought out 54 ICers for 30 mins of 1
min hard, 1 min easy. The trail seemed more crowded than normal today with
tons of people doing the Incline Loop. Indeed, once past the Incline
trail short-cut there was no one to be seen!
