Collegiate Peaks 50 Mile
Gina Harcrow reports:
Location: Buena Vista
Date: May 6th, 2006
Distance: 50 miles
Goal: To finish my first ultra in almost 2 years (hopefully under 10
hours)
Results: 10:28

General Information: This is the third year I have run Collegiate Peaks.
The course is
beautiful and although it is hilly, it is not a really difficult course.
Aid
station volunteers are always friendly, low key ultra running event. $55
for
50 miles is a pretty good deal since you get a long sleeve tech shirt and
gloves thrown in the deal:) This was my first race since having a
c-section
delivery in December. I was wholly under trained and overweight, which is
probably to be expected with a 4 month old baby. I felt alright until mile
30, at which point my stomach and my legs decided that they had really had
enough. For the next 10 miles I crawled along. My feet were throbbing with
every step. Even on the downhill I could barely jog. I contemplated
turning
at 30 and heading back, but my ego is too big for that and I have never
DNF’d a race; I didn’t feel like starting now. After a lot of prayer,
dumping out my Gatorade and only doing water and gel, and a lot of
walking,
I was able to catch a second wind for the last 8 miles (which are
primarily downhill). I
had a strong last 6 miles and managed to actually pass a few people (ok,
so
they were suffering and walking, or throwing up, but I still passed them:)
Overall, it was probably a bad idea to do the 50 mile option on this race,
but it is done.

Things Done Right: Went out slow. Took gel every hour/hour and a half
through the whole
race. Walked most of the hills. Prayed a lot when I started to suffer.
Didn’t DNF.

Things Done Wrong: I did not train enough for a 50 mile race. I had 4 long
runs (18,
2x20, and 27) going into the race, which is not nearly enough time on my
feet. I am still carrying an extra 7-8 pounds from the pregnancy. Didn’t
cut
my toenails so I am going to lose both on my big toes.

Other Stuff: Great course and volunteers. The Incline Club has a great
showing every year.

5/25/2006 Thur: 50 ICers showed for a 30 minute tempo run up the Barr
Trail. It was a tad dry and warm but as always the case the higher we got
the nicer it got:-) 5 Hydro Hills rounded out the workout.

5/21/2006 Sun: A perfect day brought out 64 ICers including the top 29 in
the workout board! The run was Intemann / Section 16. The downhill on the
backside never ceases to be awesome because it is so gentle it does not
beat you up:-) Karen Brennan brought homemade cookies to the run today and
even packed them in ice so the chocolate would not melt while we were
running!!!

5/18/2006 Thur: A nice cloud cover made for perfect running conditions for
43 ICers. The protocol was 1 minute hard, 1 minute easy up the Barr Trail.
On the way back down the trail we were treated to one of the most intense
double rainbows I have EVER seen. It was so bright it looked fake.
Awesome!
